No ethernet problem
- Pros: Small, neat, simple, meets modest needs
- Cons: Flexibility requires a lot of modification, especially since the power supply is minimal, to reduce power usage. And if you add stuff, you will probably have a cooling problem, though the Shuttle folks have a solution for that.
- Other Thoughts: I have had no problems with my ethernet card; in fact, this system has been ideal for me; I'm currently running Windows 7 and Sidux dual booted from it. I haven't added anything to the hardware, but I ditched Foresight immediately.
bad ethernet on three boxes
- Pros: Small box, all the basics at a great price, makes a great little server if you need one. Except for the con below...
- Cons: The mobo ethernet is badly designed; I've got three of these little boxes and they all exhibit unreliable ethernet. I did a little experimenting, and it seems that if the power supply has very little load e.g. disconnect the hard drive, the ethernet will come up reliably. Which is obviously pretty useless.
So if you get this box, plan on buying a separate ethernet card for its one available slot. I dont think this problem is really the power supply, because I've loaded one of the boxes with two hard drives, two memory sticks, and a fan on the back vent. Measured power consumption of 70 watts, so well under the 100 watts promised.
- Other Thoughts: There was benefit in this box due to form factor, but not worth the trouble. In retrospect, I wish I'd simply built my own box. I was fooled into thinking it would be a solid product because of previous shuttle experience. Dont be mislead as I was. This is a cheap product with mfg corners cut too deeply.
Additional note; I ordered the first box and it seemed ok - I ordered two more both of which were dead on arrival. Shipped these back, and the replacements seemed to be ok except for the ethernet issue. So quality control is quite bad as well.
Great computer, disaster OS
- Pros: Computer is quiet and looks nice. Keyboard is a soft touch and a nice quality mouse. No hardware errors.
- Cons: VGA only -- no DVI, however the VGA connection still outputs high quality to my 20" LCD. Foresight installation is a complete disaster. At first no program worked, after restart most programs worked. Could not install Ubuntu without hooking up external USB CD-ROM drive. This is really the only downside hardware wise.
- Other Thoughts: I would say this is still a good value, just requires some extra work.
