A review...
- Pros: Well, the machine comes out of the box with a pretty good setup in the standard config for a solid all around machine to last a while.
- Cons: This is the real only reason I wrote this is to tell people about the inside of the case. The thing is this Gateway was a machine that we installed at the corporation I worked at and I was impressed with their screw less design in cases. What that means is you need no screwdriver to open, or install any drives or parts this is very cool and helpful. Now, somewhere down the line some jackhole at GW decided this was entirely too easy to use and cool, so they went back to screws and old school case design. This is my gripe I was kind of bummed this is all screws and the thing is also when you slide a drive in it is so dagnabit (profanity filter lameness) tight from some spring type setup with the drive cage you have to push till it slips (bangs) into place. This is NOT a good thing for a G-force sensitive device. Other than that....cool machine.
- Other Thoughts: Not a bad looking case from the outside.
Great PC
- Pros: Great PC for the money. Runs anything i can throw at it with ease. I do a lot of video copying and editing and can run that in the background while playing a game without a hiccup. More than enough space and ram than i will ever use but its great. Also lot of expansion slots for a second dvd drive and hdd space.
- Cons: The only downfall that kept me from giving it 5 eggs was the wimpy power supply and on board graphics. I plan on upgrading both of them later but it will do for now.
- Other Thoughts: Also installed a wireless n PCI card and worked without any problems. Great computer and awesome replacement for my old laptop.
Is Gateway trying to survive?
- Pros: Fast delivery as usual from Newegg. System was competitively priced, enough to alter my plans to build a system. On inspection the system looked attractive. The computer was well packed, and came in a plastic bag to prevent it from getting wet in transit. The system is very quiet and came with good instructions.
- Cons: When I turned on the computer the system powered down on its own during the windows vista installation process. I waited thinking that this was normal. After a long while I turned the system on and was greeted with "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation"; clicking "ok" would only re-start the same chain of events. I called customer support and was told to press F8 on restart to go into windows recovery mode, but non of the options allowed me to recover windows. Customer support then said that they would send me a windows vista recovery disk and that it would take 10 days to arrive. I responded in shock. Customer support then told me that the disk was available on line and that I could buy it, but it was 20 dollars, and 20 dollars for shipping.
I bought Gateway because I wanted to give them some business, and the price seemed right.
- Other Thoughts: I went on line and used utorrent to get a windows vista 64 recovery ISO and burnt it to a CD. when I tried to reinstall windows it kept asking for the product key, which I din't have. Called Gateway again and was told that I needed to wait ten days, (Quite a disgusting thought!!), or pay 40 dollars for a recovery CD. "Those are Gateway's policies". Is Gateway insane? Those policies are truly primitive and surely they must not be planning on surviving if they treat customers in such barbaric way. Only about DELL customer service have I heard similar horrors.
