Great until I had to send it back
- Pros: This product offers alot of bang for the buck. It is fast and handles most games well. The monitor has a great picture. I could not come close to matching the specs for the price with any other computer.
- Cons: Build quality appears so so. Thee power button does not always work. I have had to send it back because of that and the cpu fan runs at full speed all the time. You can hear it two rooms away. Unfortunately I had to pay $70 to ship it back to Gateway for repairs. Not confidence inspiring after three months. Makes me wonder if I should have bitten the bullet and gotten a Mac but it would have cost twice as much.
- Other Thoughts: They don't build em like they used to. I'm just bitter I had to pay to ship it back but it was great until that. Hopefully it was just a minor issue.
Free 7 Upgrade is very slow......
- Pros: The machine is well built with a very nice case. DDR3, 23" LCD, and huge hard drive. Features all the connections you would need as well as a little tray on top for connected devices. Great package deal price! Good hardware.
- Cons: Power supply could be stronger but at this price I cant really question it because this machine was obviously built to fit a certain price point and target a specific market. What really ticked me off and the main reason i took off two stars is because I have not yet received the free upgrade which I requested using the online form on 11/24... status still shows "fulfillment in progress"; very disappointing because I did the same for a recently purchased acer machine AM5800 and received the upgrade in less than 10 business days. I contacted them and recieved an automated response that a response would follow in 10 days- love those! dont you?
- Other Thoughts: I have not been able to use the machine because I am waiting for the upgrade to arrive so I can run a clean install and not lose a few weeks of data. I prefer this case and the construction of this PC over the ACER AM5800 but the ACER features a much stronger CPU with a less impressive mostly plastic case- This was my second ACER purchased for a client and although I wanted to give gateway a chance, I am seriously considering otherwise due to the terrible experience with the free upgrade. I know its not handled by gateway but it carries their name and the same company processes the upgrades for the ACER machines so why the holdup gateway???
Not bad!
- Pros: So far so good, nothing has gone wrong yet. Everything has been easy, including getting it all out of the box and set up. It comes with 64 bit Vista Home Premium, but with a free upgrade to Windows 7 (at least it did when I bought it).
I really like the way the pc tower is designed. It's designed so that you can access all of it without having to be sitting right in front of it. I keep my computer on the floor just next to my desk, and I can do everything without having to bend down.
It's expandable -- two PCI slots (comes with a modem in one of them). There are areas for 2 more hard drives as well.
The monitor is beautiful, colors are vivid and bright. It supports hdmi but does not come with the cable, only dvi and vga are included. The video card does support dual monitors.
- Cons: I do not like the monitor stand at all. It is not height adjustable, and it wobbles. I had to set it on top of something to get it to the right height. Eventually I'll get a stand for it that does not wobble.
The soundcard does not have a digital output. It still sounds great, but a digital connection to my stereo might eliminate the low hum (ground loop issue). I have a PCI soundcard with digital out, so I will use that instead.
Windows Vista is annoying, and though a free windows 7 upgrade is promised, I've been waiting almost a month now without it. I emailed customer service about that, and got an automated reply saying that they would respond within 10 BUSINESS DAYS. Not very encouraging as far as customer service goes. That's a long time to wait for an email response. I haven't tried calling or using live chat, so that might be faster.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, I am very happy with this computer. I took one star away for the poor quality monitor stand, lack of digital audio out, and because it doesn't come with windows 7 already installed.
If you're planning to install extra hard drives or optical drives, I recommend reading the instructions on how to take it all apart. I normally ignore manuals and rely on my ability to just figure it out on my own, but I had a lot of trouble with this case. It was very simple once I read the directions, I could have saved myself a lot of time.
Also, it's all SATA, if you are planning on using any IDE hard drives, keep in mind that the adapters usually stick out a bit -- I was not able to put my hard drive in one of the spaces because it stuck out so far that the case couldn't close. It fit in the other space though. I'll probably buy an external enclosure for my second IDE drive.
