4 out of 5 eggs100-hour burn-in is alive and well...

Pros: Small footprint, upgradeable to Windows 8.1 (huh - right?), can do a pretty fair job of loading web pages, adequate processor for a low-end desk unit, 64-bit. This processor stays pretty well maxed out though. Load Task Manager and watch how Windows pushes it at or near 100% quite frequently. Definitely do your Windows Updates with nothing else going on. I had some fail, and my router spat this thing off the network, but not sure if that was due to CPU overload or the upcoming heap-big hiccup that was to later occur.

Cons: The 64-bit looks like a plus, until you see that the OS behaves like an x86 with Windows reporting that only 3.71 GB of the 4 gigs of RAM can be used by the OS. The rest is consumed by the onboard graphics, so upgrading to a couple of gigs of RAM more might help some...

Other Thoughts: Like Rodney might have said, this thing is running pretty good now, but last week it was in pretty bad shape. I took it out of the box on the 11th, went through the 200 updates belonging to Windows 8, then did the 8.1 upgrade.

By the 13th I had all my programs pretty much installed, when I tried the DVD player. A movie looked good, so I tried a CD and it was terribly garbled. Got the home-made drivers disc out and started repairing the audio driver when the system crashed with a thud and Windows refused to even try to start from then on.

These folks know what they are talking about when they say you should burn your recovery and drivers discs ASAP (which I did as soon as I got through the new registration process).

Still, it took hours of the BIOS looping, my restarting from Recovery page, my shutting down, my unplugging the thing from the wall, etc.

I have no idea how, but eventually I was able to do a factory reset using the recovery disc, and started all over again. If I had it to do all over again, I would plug it in and let it cook for 4 days (once I had the recovery discs, that is.)

Should you shy away from Gateway based on this? This seems to be a pretty common recommendation among manufacturers these days with doing these emergency discs first thing right out of the box strongly recommended.

My second go-around I created a restore point after the first 99 updates, then another after the next 101. After the 8.1 upgrade I figured it was time to do another restore point. Guess what? My previous two restore points were wiped out by the 8.1 install. Luckily it seems to be running ok for now, so maybe it got whatever was bugging it out of its system. I was able to successfully do a System Image after all programs were installed, so from now on it should be smooth sailing.

Hopefully. LOL

And yes, now both a DVD and a CD will play and with the thing in the upright position.

Footnote to Windows 8:
Hey. I hated it as much as the next guy. But having been forced to go this route, I eventually got used to finding stuff in this clunky (but brighter than a peacock) GUI. Once you get past 8 and arrive at 8.1 things are a lot friendlier to us users who now finally can find out how to X out of a program again. Sorta.

4 out of 5 eggswin some and you loose some

Pros: great mid range pc can surf web and play games that aren't too hard video wise....packaging was fine and shipment was on time without much fuss...i know they are refurbished but they (why they i bought 3 of them for my kids and wife) looked new and well wrapped ...and now read on for the

Cons: the only con is kinda windows 8 and the update to 8.1 and that's not neweggs fault

Other Thoughts: never and i mean never unless you like punishing yourself and have alot of coffee set-up 3 pc update windows 8 to 8.1 and configure at the same time....what a
actually it wasn't too bad... first off 1 of the pc (and this where i should have stopped)looked a little different from the other 2 (no stickers) they all booted up fine. windows 8 setup is a nightmare if you have a weak or slow internet connection...but that should be expected 24 hours to update and setup...but the one that looked different windows wouldn't activate (it told me this license limit was reached and calling Microsoft was a waste of time i had to buy a new cd key) and then the sound chip on the motherboard died and on the 35 day so did the motherboard....i know i should have returned it sooner but this was my fault.....but that one computer seemed to slip by the refurbishing dept not finished.....but i guess 2 out of 3 aint bad....(nice song lesson here is to be picky and really look them over first and dont be like me and not return them right away.....this doesn't reflect on newegg at all i still do recommend them.....

5 out of 5 eggsGood basic machine

Pros: Great price/value. Works very well. I bought this machine mostly to give Windows 8 a try. I've already upgraded it to 8.1. As other posts have mentioned, it can take some time. Before upgrading it I let a few windows updates complete until I saw "upgrade to 8.1" in the store page.

As far as the machine itself goes, it's not a gaming computer, nor is it a multimedia editing powerhouse. I bought mine for $179.00 and didn't expect it to be either of those. But I will say for what I spent I'm quite happy with it. If you figure what a copy of Windows will cost you, a hard drive, case etc... you couldn't build anything for what this cost. It seems very sturdy, and like other reviews have mentioned, mine looks like it's a brand new machine.

I have already added some more RAM I had lying around, it came with 4 Gigs but now has 8. I have two 8 gig sticks lying around but I don't think it can use that much. I ordered a controller card so I can add a 2TB drive to it, and use my two 2TB ESATA drives with it.

It's got a nice small foot print, and should fit very nicely next to my home theater. I'm pretty much going to use it as a storage/media player. Which is another good point. If you had to go out and buy a DVD player with internet access you'd probably spend close to what this cost.

This would be perfect for internet browsing, emailing, light word processing..a great machine for an older person.

Mine came with 4 gigs of ram, a 500 gig hard drive, keyboard and mouse. There is a slot for a video card and one PCIE slot. I ordered a controller card so I could add another drive and use my ESATA drives with this.

Cons: No back-up disk..but not a big deal. I already made an image of the drive in it's vanilla state and threw it on one of my storage drives.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to give Windows 7 a try...takes a little to get used to but for the most part seems like a good OS. THe 8.1 upgrade is worth it. Just set it up to do it over night and let it do it's thing. I also bough this machine because it's been a long time since I had an AMD based system. My last one was a AMD K6/3 on a Tyan Trinity super socket 7 board, which by the way I still use now and then to play old Dos based games like Mech Warrior. I've got a nice gaming machine sitting next to that, and an Intel PBZ875 with a P4 3.2 gig extreme edition running Windows XP.

5 out of 5 eggsToo Good To Pass Up

Pros: Light, small, inexpensive, large hard drive, 4 GB RAM, Windows 8 - 64 bit operating system, HDMI output, no tax, not loaded with junk programs, seems to be brand new.
Of course, very fast shipping.

Cons: 1.4 Ghz processor

Other Thoughts: I talked two of my buddies into upgrading to these, if for nothing else than to become familiar with the Windows 8 operating system. I "prep" their computers for them and I was impressed from the time I saw the small UPS package on my porch. From there, it just got better. I've spent two and three days prepping their computers in the past, between updating, uninstalling junk, installing cards, hardware upgrades and installing the necessary software from other sources. This time it took me no time at all. Most of the time I spent tinkering with the settings, because I enjoy it.
I'm self taught, and don't know don't understand one tenth of what I'd love to understand about computers, but this one has been a pleasure to work with.
For $175, it's a great deal for a great computer.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad for the $$$

Pros: Price, small footprint, appears to be a brand new unit.

Cons: Requires a lot of work if want to use it as a HTPC. Noticeably slower than a machine with a 3 + Ghz CPU.

Other Thoughts: A friend of mine bought this here on Newegg, but had a lot of problems, so he asked me to look at it. First thing I did was a system refresh, which reinstalls windows 8 from the restore partition, saving any data on the HDD. Unfortunately, it also reinstalls all the bloatware. So, after over 100 windows updates, I uninstalled everything except the OS. Put on classic shell to make it useable and free windows defender for anti virus. Did not update to 8.1. You need to get the AMD catalyst driver and software to get video scaling and HDMI audio to work properly. Make sure you update the other drivers as well. Now it will play netflix, youtube, and stream media via xbmc, all in HD to a big screen TV. XBMC and VLC will easily do 1080p, and the neflix metro app has higher quality video than playing in a browser.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding so far....

Pros: Quiet, boots fast, very competent machine

Cons: Some syncing lag between video/audio with HD Netflix but non-HD was awesome. Not sure if it's the GPU or Netflix....

Other Thoughts: As other reviewers have noted, was pleasantly surprised to learn that the PC was upgraded to 6 GB RAM and AMD E1-1500 processor. CPU tower looked new upon receipt and keyboard & mouse appeared to be brand new (keyboard had protective film). Operation with Windows 8 is awesome and display looks great on my Viewsonic. Using non-touch display with Windows 8 but it works fine. Let's see how it stands up to the test of time. At this point, would purchase another in a heartbeat....

5 out of 5 eggsGateway SX2110G

Pros: Price, small size, 1Gbps NIC. Like others I too bought the 4gb/E1-1200 model and received 6gb/E1-1500. Nice surprise. Keyboard/Mouse/PC Case had plastic protective film on them. Did notice side label indicating specs had been removed. Bought to try Win8/8.1 to see what all the fuss is about. Replaced with Win7 after a week of trying Win8. Just not willing to invest time in figuring where they hid all the old functions now that the Start menu is gone.

Cons: non for my needs since it runs Win7 just fine and drivers are available on Gateway website.

Other Thoughts: At other reviewer's suggestion I tried WHS 2011 on it, worked great and bought a 2nd unit to setup as a 2nd WHS as backup to my 1st server. WHS 2011 uses the Win7 drivers off the Gateway website. Motherboard has one PCI Express (x1) slot and 1 x PCI Express (x16) slot. When I removed the hard drive/dvd drive caddy to swap in a bigger hard drive I spotted 2 unused USB 2.0 headers on the motherboard. Haven't tested but assume they should work fine and will allow for 4 more USB ports on the back of the case if I don't use the expansion slots for cards. You will need low profile bracket with USB 2.0 header to use those connections.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Shipped with 6gb of ram & E1-1500 (advertised as 4gb & E1-1200). As nice as it was to get more than I was expecting there is no way I will ever utilize more than 4gb with this processor at the helm.
-Does not look refurbished, everything still has the protective plastic on it
-Keyboard is surprisingly nice
-Excellent price. If you want to run Windows you can't build a pc for this cheap.
-HDMI out (allows sound through monitor & better image quality than vga)
-Low power consumption for always-on applications

Cons: -Processor is weak, but I knew this going into it.
-No integrated wireless (USB adapters can be had for <$10)
-Takes a long time to update to Windows 8.1 (like a day-long project with 15mbps internet). You have to go through a lot of Windows Updates in order for it to be eligible for the 8.1 update in the Windows store. Don't try to let 8.1 download and install by itself. If you're not there to accept the terms when it reboots it reverts everything back to 8 and you have to repeat the process.

Other Thoughts: -I would not recommend this as an HTPC. It struggles playing HD youtube videos.
-I purchased to use mainly as a remote Quickbooks Pro 2012 server . Purchasing another copy of Quickbooks would have cost more than buying this pc. (In case anyone wants to do the same, this solution will not allow one company file to be worked on simultaneously, you need a multi-user quickbooks version to do so).
-I will also use it for home storage and backup of my other pc's, essentially a NAS but a fully functional pc. It appears that it will serve these two functions well, and it was a very cost effective alternative to a dedicated NAS. I haven't opened it up to see if there are additional sata ports. My storage expansion is going to be a usb drive I have lying around. It does have a dvd drive which I'd assume is sata, so if you do not need the optical drive there is at least room for one more disc.
-I wrote this review on the pc. It is definitely noticeably different when compared to my 3rd gen i5 @4.2 with an ssd, but it is still a functional pc. It's a good child/grandma pc.

5 out of 5 eggsA good buy!

Pros: Quiet, small, decent performance. I bought this to use as a NVR running Milestone Xprotect. Came with 6gb Ram instead of 4. Runs great on Windows 8.1. Handles 720p video well.

Cons: Not many. Did have some bloatware that I immediately removed. Not free.

Other Thoughts: I removed the bloatware off of this and ran the 88 or so Windows updates that it needed and Upgraded to Windows 8.1. It seems to be rather peppy for what it is. It runs Milestone Xprotect without any issues and does pretty good with video up to 720p. I had a some minor issues with 1080p but no big deal. When I checked the system info in Windows it said the RAM was 5.74gb or something in that ballpark. I opened up the case and sure enough, it had one 2gb module and one 4gb module! So, I got that going for me. If you need an inexpensive utility computer just buy it.
