1 out of 5 eggsUSB ports stopped working on two computers of this model.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: I bought two of these computers. All USB ports stopped working a day after I first opened the computer ON BOTH COMPUTERS SIMULTANEOUSLY.
Seems like the problem is related to a Hardware and Windows 8 compatibly issue. Outside of Windows 8 (BIOS, Windows 7) everything worked fine.
I installed windows 7 and everything works now.

Other Thoughts: This computer ships with Windows 8 but seems not to be Windows 8 ready.
If you do buy this computer, be ready to install Windows 7.
Gateway makes it very inconvenient to access the boot menu. In order to boot into a installation CD, boot into the BIOS and modify the appropriate settings settings in the security page (secure boot) and boot page (enable boot page, change CSM settings etc), then reboot and press F12 to access the boot menu.

1 out of 5 eggsMultiple problems

Pros: It arrived

Cons: The computer was paired with a new ASUS monitor. The HDMI interface was intermittent. It would work for a day or so and then it wouldn't connect. I thought it was the ASUS at first but when I tried the monitor on another computer, it worked fine. I have concluded the HDMI port on the computer is faulty.

The second problem is my inability to boot from a DVD. I changed the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD as 1st priority and it wouldn't work. It seemed that the BIOS didn't recognize that the DVD was there, but when I got into Windows 8, it works fine. Just no boot. I talked to Gateway and they walked me through what I had already done several times and insisted that I would have to restore the system to the factory settings, getting rid of all programs installed. I didn't want to do it, knowing it wouldn't work, because the fault was in the BIOS and not Windows. I did it anyway and as I expected, it didn't change the fact that I couldn't boot from a DVD. I don't see how that could be anything outside the bios, but I have made changes that would possibly affect that and nothing works.

Other Thoughts: I submitted a replacement request to Newegg and am waiting to hear from them.

4 out of 5 eggsGood except for bad HDMI interface

Pros: Got as a second computer for my wife and it is not meant to be a power machine. For what we use it for, it works just fine except for one problem.

Cons: I also got an ASUS monitor and had problems with the HDMI interface, which I at first thought was a problem with the monitor. However, I tried it on another computer and it worked fine. It appears that after the Gatewayr has been ON for a few hours, the HDMI interface is lost. Works the same with 3 HDMI cables. I switched over to a DVI interface and everything was fine.

As I said, when I hooked it up to my other computer, it worked great, so it was not the Monitor. I am going to keep it though, since the DVI interface works and it will be sufficient for what the computer is used for. I don't want the hassle of setting things up again, even though I can clone the drive and start where I left off. The computer is fine otherwise.

1 out of 5 eggsIt Has Problems For Me

Pros: Works to an extent for what I bought it for which is basic gaming.

Cons: I cant upgrade the graphics card.

Other Thoughts: i tried to install a Geforce GTX650 graphics card into the computer, yet when i put the card into the computer it refuses to boot at all. I called MSI(graphics card maker) to ask if it works with the motherboard. they told me it did, so i replaced the graphics card for a new one. same problem, i then made sure that i had the required specs for the card, i do. i replaced the computer and still the problem persists. in addition, when i contacted Gateway about the problem they told me to take it to a service center where i would have to pay to have someone fix the problem. in all, i'm far from satisfied with the computer.

5 out of 5 eggsYeah It's cool

Pros: This is a nice solid rig for the price. I think you get more then you pay for with this box. The i3 is very nice. It's pretty fast with enough memory and storage. For internet surfing and standard Apps and Programs on the cheap, this is your next computer. I have been having a lot of fun with Windows 8 too. I watched a few tutorials on Youtube. After that, Windows 8 is a breeze to navigate.

Cons: The graphics are pretty weak. Some Shockwave games are pixelated where they were clear on my old rig ( I was running a video card before). You might want to buy a video card for it. The mouse and keyboard are pretty cheap but doable.

Other Thoughts: I am real happy with it. I had some software problems with Windows 8, but found solutions for them online. Overall you can't beat it.

4 out of 5 eggsBudget NAS foundation

Pros: 6 SATA on mobo (rare in this price range).
Room for a 2x5.25" to 3x3.5"HDD cage (see Newegg item N82E16817993064 or N82E16816701003) gives total of 5 x 3.5" HDD and a sixth can be added if you are creative. 2nd generation i3 processor easily handles 1080P and transcodes video rapidly. good power draw to performance ratio. USB 3.0 x2 (on rear).

Cons: Have to sacrifice the optical drive for the extra HDD bays if you want to max out the SATAs but this is a good tradeoff for my situation. Gateway reliability is suspect. BIOS was fiddly to configure for OS other than the factory-installed win8 but I did eventually get alternate OSs booting.

Other Thoughts: Great box for NAS/HTPC build.

Gateway reliability history is not the best in my personal experience and Consumer Reports agrees. Mobo is Acer branded so hopefully reliability will be improved but only time will tell.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Budget Setup

Pros: i3 processor
7200 rpm hard drive
video

Cons: no pci slot
not a lot of room in the case if you want to upgrade, but for the price you can't complain at all

Other Thoughts: I was extremely apprehensive about getting a new computer with windows 8, but the start up and shut down times and the way Windows 8 uses memory is pretty impressive. I can start up the computer and it's ready to go in honestly less than a minute.

Windows 8 isn't very intuitive, but one thing that has really helped me adjust is a program called Classic Shell it gives you a start button, its free and makes it more windows 7 like.

The computer is decently fast with the i3, especially for general tasks and I'm not a gamer, but I imagine it wouldn't do too bad for most gaming. This is a solid system for the price and I'm extremely happy. I've been looking for a desktop for a while and for the money you can't do better.

5 out of 5 eggsDX4870-UR348

Pros: Intel i3 Processor, 7200RPM 500GB Hard Drive, Available PCI Expansion Slots, USB 3.0. Computer Case quality seems to be well built.

Cons: Mouse and Keyboard included are not of the greatest quality (seems cheaply made), however doable. Motherboard still uses slightly outdated PCI Express 2.0 slots instead of PCI 3.0. Keep in mind, if you're going to use a PCI 3.0 Graphics Card etc, they are usually backwards compatible to PCI 2.0; so really no worries.

Another con is the computer comes with a 300 watt power supply, which is adequate if you do not plan to do any upgrades. Try putting in a decent graphics card and you'll need at least 450 watts minimum, so keep in mind you may need to upgrade the power supply at some point.

Comes with 4GB of RAM running at 1333Mhz, which is adequate for web browsing, light multi-tasking, and word processing. 8GB Dual Channel Memory running at 1600Mhz would of been preferred, but can't complain given the price point of the system. System allows you to expand up to 16GB of total system memory running a clock speed of 1600Mhz max.

Intel Graphics HD 2500 is far more than capable for everyday computing, video streaming, etc. However if you're going to be using this system for anything such as intense photo editing, 3D rendering, video editing; it would be highly recommended to upgrade the memory and add in a graphics card. (Be aware of power supply requirements when choosing a card)

No Wireless Card for WiFi

Other Thoughts: All in all, this is a solid budget system with the basics. In addition given the price point, it's not bad at all for an Intel i3 processor, as much of the competition at this price point opts for AMD or Celeron/Pentium based processors. I know in my review, the cons section seems to be larger than the pro's section; the things listed are not necessarily bad things, however just trying to keep the buyer aware of "possible cons" as it really comes down to what you're really going to be using this computer for.

I'd say go for it if you're looking to get the most bang for your buck, however an inexpensive memory upgrade will be your best bet if you find your computing to be more intensive.

Recommendations for the future: Add in a graphics card, upgrade the memory, and add wireless card, and I'd say you'll have a full blown system capable of handling everyday tasks with the occasional gaming.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little machine

Pros: Price...processor...7200 hard drive

Cons: Not a gamer by far but not sold as one

Other Thoughts: for the money a great machine. As for Windows 8 learn how to use it and you will love it!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value PC for $$$

Pros: +Great deal at Shell shocker/Promo code at $299.
+Sandy Bridge Core i3.
+500 GB HDD (appears to be Seagate)
+USB 3.0

Good entry level SOHO computer for general low level everyday computing. Email, Facebook, uploading pictures from digital camera.

Cons: -Documentation is sparse.
-PSU is 300W and no PCIe power connectors for GPU
-4GB memory is only on one DIMM module.
-No DVI port. Only VGA DB15 and HDMI.
-UEFI BIOS can only be accessed via integrated motherboard DB15 port when UEFI bios options are set to default
-Cannot access BIOS via keyboard during startup until UEFI BIOS options are set to Legacy.
-Cheap break away metal slot covers and only one expansion slot screw for expansion cards

Other Thoughts: I bought this machine on Shell Shocker to replace my 7 year old daughter's aged (pronounced age-ed) Socket 939 Athlon64 Venice core based PC.

I also purchased a Sapphire Radeon 7750 so that she could do light gaming such as Minecraft and other light games from Steam. Plants vs Zombies, Terraria and other similar fare.

Out of the box this is a great machine for everyday PC needs. If you just need a machine for surfing web, email, Facebook, light office suite needs, this will work nicely. This would easily replace my folks 7 year old Athlon64x2 Dell.

Installing the 7750 into this machine proved to be a pain. By default, it boots right into Windows 8 configuration for a new user. I did not have a DB15 VGA equipped monitor available at first and put the 7750 in right off the bat and had no video.

Long story short, I googled to find that I had to access UEFI BIOS from Windows 8 and it had to be accessed via the onboard DB15 VGA port. After I accessed it I disabled Secure Boot and set another BIOS option from UEFI to Legacy. After that, I shut down, installed the 7750 and then it worked. Fought with it for about 2.5 hours till I got the 7750 working.

Now that I have it set up and working, I am pleased with it.
Sure it does not have any more fans than PSU but for a 7 year old, it should hopefully provide several years of service.
