great lightweight server
- Pros: super quiet. super cool. super low power consumption. included keyboard's "action" key is blank (no windows logo!).
- Cons: for a system this lightweight, they really could have used a smaller form factor.
- Other Thoughts: i uninstalled the standard OS right away. never even booted it. ubuntu edgy command-line install. it's sitting in the living room of my parents' house quietly serving files, proxying, and downloading torrents.
this machine is ideal for this kind of use, despite the fact that it could really be smaller.
Amazing low power NAS/Firewall
- Pros: Low power consumption. Off-the-shelf parts makes switching operating system easy. Superb value.
- Cons: none.
Nice.
- Pros: Low cost. Low power consumption. Useful. Linux. Stock it uses less than 60w of power under full load.
- Cons: I would prefer Ubuntu or another distro over the default gOS, but it could be worse.
- Other Thoughts: I bought one of these to play with. They day it was shipped I cut the warranty sticker and opened it up. I was surprised at the quality of the parts. Nothing looks cheap and it is well put together. Within a week I pulled the hard drive and replaced it with a SD-to-IDE adapter and an SD card. After installing Debian and then removing the CD-ROM drive I got the power consumption down to less than 20w idle and > 30w under load. Not too shabby.
