2 out of 5 eggsNo HDMI, No deal

Pros: Not Apple or Windows

I didn't buy it.

Cons: Seems to me the best use would be to hook to a TV as a media player and web browser, a "no go" without HDMI

Other Thoughts: Would like to like this product, but displayport and proprietary audio plugs add expense to a otherwise good idea at a good price.

let apple keep their displayport

5 out of 5 eggsNEW! IMPROVED! Great basis for a media center/home theater.., without exception

Pros: OK follow up to my earlier review. The largest single complaint I had was lack of audio over the Display Port to HDMI converter.

I recently got a software update pushed through the beta channel. V. 21.0.1180.50 .....

I now have audio from the Display Port through both Display Port to HDMI converters (at least on the Display Port on the outside edge of the back panel).

Good deal.

Seems to now be doing pretty much everything I am asking of it.

Cons: None really. Minor annoyance in that Apple Magic Trackpad could be a bit more zippy. Maybe soon.

4 out of 5 eggsexcellent for public use pc

Pros: If you are a library or school this represents the least cost option of providing internet web access with the best user security. If you want the best personal security access for financial sites this is it. You can force users to sign on as guests and all their footprints will be erased at sign off.

Cons: You have a limited set of accessories to connect at the current time like thumb drives, HD drives and a limited function set with them but surfing is as good as Chrome provides.

Other Thoughts: If you want to see if this is for you just use the chrome browser with extensions because this is exactly what the chromebook or box will provide you but with the best security of all pcs.

5 out of 5 eggsA good start, but needs improvement

Pros: I have used Linux as my primary operating system before, and when I heard about Chrome OS, the idea made sense to me. I decided to try out a chrome os system as a media PC because of it's size, low power and low maintenance characteristics. I found that my Chromebox performed as advertised as far as internet surfing and video playback. The wireless antenna is decent as long as the device sits horizontally. That's as far as the positives go though.

Cons: I tried hooking it up to a different monitor with a vga input and found that the auto-recognized resolution was not correct. There appears to be no way to change the resolution without going into your xorg file and manually modifying values. There is also no way to easily change the auto standby timer. One other strange thing is when the system goes on standby the audio jack produces an annoying buzz, which get's amplified by my stereo. As they are continouly updating this operating system, I'm hoping these missing components will be added soon.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat basis for a media center/home theater, except.....

Pros: Potentially a great platform for a media center/home theater setup. It's exactly what I've been looking for for a couple of years: a thin client device that has more headroom than dedicated streaming media devices (full browser) but without all the overhead of traditional PCs.

Cons: The biggest drawback to implementation of the media center idea is the lack of audio. The little box has two Displayport++ outputs. My HDTV uses HDMI. No audio feed through VESA certified DP++ to HDMI converter. Tried two of them. Samsung tech support told me that feature is not currently supported, but may be so in a future Chrome OS release (before the end of the year [07/2012]).

Current workaround is rather inelegant: 3.5 mm phono plug out the front of the box running to a receiver/amp - meaning a lot of manual button pushing between the computer, the TV and the Chromebox just to watch streamed program.

Other Thoughts: A lot of potential here, it's a shame that Samsung/Google didn't have the foresight to provide for audio for HDMI. Do that and market this box to that niche -- this could be a monster in that role for the foreseeable future.

5 out of 5 eggsTech Savvys: DONT BUY IT!

Pros: If you are a huge technology user, do not buy this product. It is not for you. It is like using Google Chrome with no access to anything else. If you want to really try this product, just download Google Chrome and avoid the hassle of paying $330...

Cons: No access to the operating system, it's just Google Chrome without a window manager .........

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Box

Pros: Very Quick setup/boot. I was able to set this box up and running in less then 2 min (most of it was the update it had to do). After the initial setup/update, its almost an instant on.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: The two Display Ports it has in addition to the DVI are actually a newer version of some sort of media interface. It transfers not only the video, but audio as well (you have to buy your own DisplayPort to HDMI adapter about $25 at Fry's) . This is a nice little box for people who want or like to have in the living room or bedroom TV. You can access pretty much everything via the chrome browser.
