Less than desireable
- Pros: Good screen, nice form factor. Decent quality for the price. Great web cam, Mic and speakers for the package.
- Cons: Unbearably slow with Single Core Atom and GMA950 (Class 5 graphics GPU). Had it for about 2hrs before I saw the AMD Dual Core unit with the same price and MUCH better specs, Returned it to the store immediately and swapped for the AMD based unit. Can't play Youtube or Hulu in fullscreen. Skype video stutters in window'd mode, freezes up on Full screen and distorts audio.
Flimsy keyboard flexes with keys pressed in the middle of the board.
- Other Thoughts: The Atom is outdated for 2009 on the GMA945 Chipset (GMA950 Graphics). 4 years ago this would have been good for the money today but not anymore. An ATOM 330 would have helped, nVidia ION Chipset would have helped even more.
Today, go for the other Avarectec 18.4" All-in-one with AMD 1.5ghz Dual Core CPU. Has 1000mhz bus, DDR2 800 (4gb max, this is only 2gb max due to chipset) and ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics chip.
Both machines use the same amount of power. Atom 230, N270, N280, 330 your days are numbered. nVidia ION chipset adds 4x's the power and life to the system and extends memory max to 4gb on Atom 330 only.
Not Too Bad
- Pros: Does the job adequately
Actually Runs Vista better than XP Compact and Light Weight
- Cons: Front panel buttons are same color as panel, who thought this up?
Replacing HD and/or RAM is a bear
- Other Thoughts: Great computer for around the $300 I paid. In most cases, you can't get a decent monitor for that much!
By the way, the USB problem occurs when you delete the Norton anti-virus that's included. The TriGem (parent company) website has a patch to correct the problem.
Tried Vista Ultimate by the way (got a preview disk for another review). Actually works quicker than XP on this model, even with an Atom processor!
nice system, but....
- Pros: Nice space saving design. Decent performance for the build.
- Cons: Something is very wrong with the install of the operating system and the drivers, specifically the USB drivers on this machine. Upon receiving it I discovered the computer would only recognize the keyboard and mouse and only on the USB ports I had them plugged into on initial boot up. Tried several things, including a re-install from the supplied recovery CD....still did not correct it.
Finally, I did an install from a separate XP SP3 Home OEM CD, downloaded the drivers for the chipset from Intel, and it worked perfectly then!! Not sure what the issue is with how Averatec made the recovery CD or the original image on the harddrive, but I had tried installed the drivers from Intel prior to the clean install from the seperate XP OEM cd, but that did not work either. Only thing I found to fix it was a reformat and stay away from Averatec's CD and original install!
- Other Thoughts: Would buy again since I now know how to fix the USB issue. Hopefully this information helps anyone else that runs into this problem.
