1 out of 5 eggsDell lost another one!!!!

Pros: Appeared to have good features for the money, but!!!!

Cons: I've been a customer of Dell for 15 or more years, but no longer. This has been the worst buying experience I ever had during my 25+ years in computers. I had a working Dell 8100 that was getting old, so I ordered this Dell 8500 to replace it, but the dell I got had 2 problems. I fixed the first problem, but the dell would still just lockup HARD and would have to be crashed off to get it running again, for no reason, whenever it felt like it. It would lockup most the time after a few hours, but sometimes after 5 Min's and a couple times it run for a day and half before it locked up. I worked hard at trying to fix this problem and gave up when a figured out it was major problem with the Dell. Newegg exchanged it and the 2nd one had the same lockup problem as the 1st one, i.e. in a few hours it would lockup, sometimes a few Min's (one time it locked 6 times in one hour), another time it went over 2 days before lock.

I knew it was not my setup causing the problem, because the 1st Dell 8500 was setup the same as my working Dell 8100 and on the 2nd Dell 8500 I only connected a known working monitor, keyboard, mouse and internet connection, nothing else and I added no additional software and it locked same as the 1st one.

Other Thoughts: Before I bought this Dell I went to 4 different Internet Sellers and read the reviews and they were good overall, so I was wondering why this problem was just happening to me. I looked around the web to see if there were other's with this problem and I found some. The biggest enlightenment was on Dell's own forum when I found that Dell has known about this problem since the Dell 8300 and has ignored it (there are even people on the forum with refurbished dell's with this problem). I even read where dell replaced all the components in a guy's 8300 and still had to give the guy a new computer to fix the problem. My guess is if Dell accepted that they had this problem then they would have to do a recall which would cost lots, so they keeping this problem under wraps. FYI: all the Dell forums are monitored by a Dell employee, and the Dell employee for this forum has been sending the info on this problem up the line at Dell for a over a year with nothing being done and that tells you something!!!

Newegg went beyond the call of duty and made my purchase good. I have another brand of computer from Newegg and its been working great for the past couple of weeks, so 5 stars Newegg and 0 stars DELL (pronounced Hxxx, I know I been there).

Bottom line is: its a borderline design flaw and not all Dells have this problem, but some do, so its a cxxx shoot when you buy one (Newegg and I was just unlucky enough for me to get 2 in a row), so good luck if you buy one, you'll need it!

4 out of 5 eggsDell XPS 8500

Pros: Worked out of the box. I really appreciate the amount of USB ports on this computer. My old Pentium 4 computer took 20 minutes to upload files to my portable hard drive. This computer took 4 minutes to download them. This unit runs extremely quiet! Our drafting program loads files with a large amount of layers in no time at all. I am impressed at how cool the air coming from the fan is. I thought it would run hot with the amount of performance in this package.

Cons: The grapics card did not have (2) DVI outputs. I had to purchase an additional display port to active DVI output to run dual monitors. If you plan on running more than one monitor factor in that extra cost.

The keyboard was not very ergonomic and wouldn't sit level. I am going to need to purchase another one.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent desktop for the money!!

Pros: It has the Intel i7-3770 processor at 3.40GHz. 12GB of DDR3 RAM. A 2tb HDD with 32GB of SSD cache memory. I believe that is a Solid State hard drive as well. The AMD Radeon video card with 2 GB of GDDR5 dedicated memory. It's a good PC for the money, I am totally satisfied with the purchase I made in this desktop! Keep it up Dell!!

Cons: The only downfall to this computer is that it does not come with a monitor included in the price.

4 out of 5 eggsA great system, with a few annoying issues

Pros: Probably the best looking Dell I've ever seen. Lights are a minimum, the lines are pleasing, almost silent operation, and the over all construction is top notch. The system performs near the level of top end gaming pcs without the ugly case nor the ridiculousness prices. I replaced the AMD 7770 to an EVGA 660 GTX but even with the AMD 7770 video card, games ran great. There is a 32 gig ssd in the system but it isn't being used the way you would expect. Some systems based on H77 intel chip sets can use an SSD as cache to speed up your most used files. After a few days of use, the hard drive will start performing within 80% of a true SSD. It is the best of both worlds. I'm really happy with this system.

Cons: I'm taking one star off for something that has a solution but it was an annoying thing to diagnosis. As shipped, the pcie 1x slots don't work. When ever I get a new computer, the first thing I do is upgrade all drivers, bios, and firmware to the latest revision. On Dell's support web site is said I had the latest bios, A06. After a couple of days trying to get my Esata cards working, Dell support told me that there is another more uptodate bios, the A09. It isn't linked anywhere on Dell's xps 8500 site. However I did upgrade the bios and then all my pcie 1x slots started working. For myself, this is a non-issue. There was an issue, there is a fix, everything is good. I can see how others would get very frustrated and think the system is broken.

Other minor issues. The optical drive is rather noisy and feels cheap but I doubt I will ever use the drive beyond creating and using recovery disks.

Also the keyboard is very cheap in look and feel but once again, I probably will never use it. The mouse on the other hand is decent.

Last thing, and I don't feel its a con: The case will not take super huge video cards. The 660 GTX is 9.5 inches long and it was a tight fit. I doubt you could fit in a 10 inch 670 gtx. Im totally ok with this. I rather have a case with a smaller foot print and a great video card than a monster case with a monster video card.

Other Thoughts: A rarity these days. A computer that is attractive, fast, and reasonable priced. Almost the anti-Alienware. I would recommend this system to any one getting a computer for gaming.

It is a good work computer as well but I think there are better deals than this one if you aren't a gamer.

1 out of 5 eggsThis one was a lemon.

Pros: It booted out of the box.

Cons: The dvd/cd drive did not work. So, there is no way to install the necessary drivers. The computer did not come with the 32GB ssd like the ad said.

Other Thoughts: I bought from newegg, because this computer was a good deal. Newegg has also been good to the tech customer many times in the past, from what I heard.

This, however, was a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Had this a month now and it is a great system. 4 usb 3.0 ports are a nice plus. The media tray at the top is very useful if you have an mp3 player or something. It is a great media pc with the different sd card slots. It is SO quiet too! I really can't recommend this computer enough (any of the 8500 line) I have an 8300 too and it's also a solid system. Very easy to add extras in this system. Be aware that the video card blocks the other Pci express x16 spot. So you'll only have 2 of the smaller pci slots left.

Cons: None so far. See below

Other Thoughts: As i said above I have an xps 8300 and it is very quiet. When I got this system it worked great but I noticed it was louder. Determined the power supply fan was just plain loud. Dell support sent me a replacement the next day. Now it's running very quiet. Like can't tell if it's on from 5 feet away. Dell support is second to none in my experiences. Yes everyone will have their nightmare, but they do a great job. Pro tip- use thier chat function if you can.
