2 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 is terrible!

Pros: Good computer at good price.

Cons: Windows 7 downgrade is not a smooth process at all. Too way to long with Dell and Windows 8 is just not acceptable.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't recommend this computer unless you plan to use Windows 8.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 Downgrade is not smooth

Pros: Great price and great computer.

Cons: Windows 8 is horrible. Tried to play with it for a few day, but its not efficient. The windows 7 downgrade is not very smooth.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Workstation

Pros: Very fast machine well built. Just like all machines I build for clients, the first thing to do is to format the hard drive and use the OEM Windows disc to install a clean install of windows 7 pro to match the customer's working environment.

Cons: Wish the Vostro cases were a little more robust; if you need a better case it's best to step up to an Optiplex.

Other Thoughts: Every tech who installs Dell's should have a least 1 copy of every OEM CD/DVD for the Os install.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat workstations for the price

Pros: Great replacement to the 260's that i purchased for internal use as well as for clients. Efficient machines

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Easy to downgrade to Windows 7 Pro. Just use a dell oem Windows 7 disc, the license key is built in and does not ask for one.

3 out of 5 eggsDifficult Downgrade

Pros: Good price
Runs well for what I need

Cons: The Windows 7 Pro Downgrade promotion was the reason I selected this computer, but getting the downgrade was not worth my time in the end.

Overall, I find this to be a very poorly thought out and executed promotion. I e-mailed the address provided and I never got a response, so I decided to call. The reps I spoke with at Dell did not know about the promotion until after about 30 minutes on the phone I finally get them to send me a downgrade disc.

I received the disc and I attempted to perform the downgrade. Everything seemed to be going well, until the first restart, when it prompted me at boot up that there was a "digital signature error" for the file winload.efi. I rebooted to Windows 8 and tried the downgrade again- same error. I looked up this error and after much searching, someone suggested to go to the BIOS and turn on Legacy Boot. That did the trick and the Windows 7 install continued and finished.

In the end I got what I wanted, but the process to get to that point was not worth the time. Hopefully this will help someone else that may encounter the same issue.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Windows 8 Product Key??

Pros: Win 8 Pro, i3 processor, good size hard drive, wireless N, and 4GB RAM. It's a Dell. I have always been impressed with their warranty service. I have sold about 40 of the Vostro 260's, and now I'm moving onto these 470's. Aside from the increase in HDD, RAM, and Win8Pro, it's pretty much the same reliable machine.

Cons: Windows 8... Just a complaint, more than anything. I buy these a few at a time to sell to my customers. I would rather have the option at first boot for Win 7 Pro or Win 8 Pro. Also, these no longer come with MS Office 2010 Starter Edition... Use time-bombed trial or enter product key for full versions. I would have deducted an egg for this, but it was a MS change... not something that Dell did.

Other Thoughts: No Windows 8 product key OEM sticker?!?! Are these legit??

Aside from the Windows 8 rebellion, these are great business comptuers. They are clean and speedy, and now come with 4GB RAM compared to the equivalent Vostro 260 with Win7 and 2GB RAM that I was buying prior to this. The Out of Box Experience is fast to go through. Got it up and running and on the network in just a few minutes.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Deal

Pros: This is very fast, very quiet, very easy to set up, and has a very low price for a third generation i3 processor. I compared and couldn't find as well equipped a third gen. PC at this price point.

Cons: I haven't figured out yet how to share folders and printers between Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Home PCs on the same wireless network. Microsoft documentation on the web is arcane.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as an HTPC for my family room and so far it has been fine, except for the Windows 7 home network issues I've mentioned here. In fact, for my purposes, Windows 8 is better than Windows 7. It's a very HTPC-friendly user interface - with more apps available than I thought. And, Windows 8 is a lot more responsive than reviews I've read would lead one to believe (at least on this PC).

I haven't had the opportunity to call Dell support about the Windows 7 downgrade disks, so I can't speak to that.

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate on Wiindows 7

Pros: Still a good machine but still no Windows 7. Why not remove the downgrade option and that would resolve the issue.

Cons: The disks arrived but I stumbled when I contacted Dell to get a Product Key. They refused to issue a key unless the ownership data I gave to them matched their information. Unfortunately it did not. So now I have the media but no way to activate. Still quite a mess.

Other Thoughts: Someone somewhere needs to identify a process that allows customers avail of the specification": Free downgrade to Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsRevisted the Downgrade Process

Pros: Update to my review/warning below. After reading CraigH's review I called Dell back and talked with the same rep I did the first time through. This time things went much better! I was on and off the phone in about five minutes. Disks are in the mail!

Cons: None!
