3 out of 5 eggsHit or Miss

Pros: These units are sleek, simple, and convenient. Good performance, decent portability around the office/home, smart charging design. Not heavily cluttered with trial ware and the like out of the box. There are a lot of good things to be said.

I have a funeral home client who ordered 3 of these and one of them they use when discussing photos, caskets, and the like. The sleek, clean design makes it very professional and presentable in front of clients.

Cons: So far, the same client above has go through 5 of these units. Out of the first batch two units worked fine but the third had no sound. I was able to determine that the issue was not software but physical hardware. Both Windows and Linux were quite insistent that the unit did not have an audio adapter of any kind (despite the headphone on the side and the working sound on the other two units).

I returned that unit and the unit which replaced it seemed to work fine at first. However it is now having an entirely new problem. The touch sensor in the screen is apparently malfunctioning as, regardless of software configuration, it constantly registers random touches all over the screen. A little research has revealed that the touch screen issue is a common problem with these units including videos of the exact same phenomenon on YouTube. Cleaning the screen hasn't solved the problem and careful examination shows no signs of scratches.

The only other issue I might take with this unit is that the unit is sold with a charging stand but the charging stand *only* provides power. The smart thing to do would have been to integrate a USB hub into the stand as well. This way when you place the unit on the stand to charge all your stationary USB devices would immediately be available. As it stands any USB devices you have must be plugged directly into the unit's two USB ports and disconnected when you "go portable."

Other Thoughts: Something else to consider. I'll be the first to say All-In-One Portables are the future of personal computers but it's worth pointing out that such units are built with mostly proprietary parts that a computer technician like myself can not replace. With units such as these we can usually replace the harddrive, memory, and CPU... but everything else is likely to be built into the mainboard and the only mainboards that will fit the shell are made by the manufacturer of the unit.

In and of itself this is not much of an issue. Just something to keep in mind when figuring long term cost of ownership. If a unit like this has a hardware failure you will often be buying a new unit rather than repairing it. Extended warranties are your friends.
