5 out of 5 eggsmakes perfect sense

Pros: finally a pc that fits the back of a monitor. very compact memory can be upgraded to max 2gb. internal n capable works with newer wireless terminals. OS is linux based hence stability 120 platter drive the n270 is capable enought to do some light photo editing and some LIGHT gaming using built in games.

Cons: NOT intended for WOW gaming basic internet small server for around the house is about it for this thing

Other Thoughts: i do not own one of these units. HOWEVER i do own a Eeepc 900a and wish i had ordered this. the major advantages of this over the eee units is obvious as daylight the hdd is much faster. way more space on disk. and much less desktop clutter this would be best for a middle school child with research and to keep them off your i7 chipped gamer you just dropped 6k on.

5 out of 5 eggsHT not DC

Pros: Not DC (read below)

Cons: Not DC (read below)

Other Thoughts: My mistake, it's hyperthreaded not dual core. Still nice though, just ordered 2 more.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little Linux server

Pros: Nice small design, great for a development Linux server. It's dual core and upgradable to 2g, plenty for what I need. The hard drive is plenty big and gigabit ethernet is great. With all it comes with, the price is great. This is the ultimate throwaway Linux server.

It Comes with a recovery disc incase you mess up your custom install too. I read a comment where it didn't but it does.

Cons: Comes with 2x512mb chips so you have to buy 2x1g chips to upgrade it to maximum memory.

Front door is a little flimsy.

Side panel is a bear to get off.

The Linux distro that comes with it is terrible.

Keyboard has a strange layout on the right side of it and the mouse is small like a laptop mouse.

For me, none of these issues mattered (except maybe the front panel) because I'm using it as a headless Linux box.

Other Thoughts: I got this last week and installed CentOS 5.2 on it. Redhat EL 4.0 wouldn't recognize the network card and I got tired of banging my head against the wall trying to get the downloaded driver to work. It's sitting by itself with a network cable and power cord plugged into it, quiet as a clam running a development server for me. I'm totally thrilled.

I was thinking of getting another one to see how Windows 2003 Server ran on it. 2g of ram is plenty for most OS (well before Vista was unleashed on the world).

5 out of 5 eggsDoes it make sense?

Pros: Does it make any sense for anyone to buy this when there are Eee PCs for sale?

Cons: The Eee PC's have the exact same hardware and they come with a screen and act as a laptop.

Other Thoughts: I dont understand.

5 out of 5 eggsAtomic if you know UNIX

Pros: Complete replacement for that old P3 box (you know what I'm talking about). Runs pretty much silent and low power.
BIOS flashing should be simple if needed. I was able to copy the .rom file to the C: partition and EZ Flash detected it. You should also be able to copy the .rom to USB flash drive and do it that way too. It can also boot from a USB flash.

Cons: The cover was extremely difficult to pry off when upgrading the RAM. First you have to remove the two screws behind the stickers. It uses DDR2 laptop memory 200-pin 533Mhz and the maximum memory supported is 2GB.

Other Thoughts: The default linux is really limited. I wiped everything off and used an external DVD drive to install Debian. Xorg worked with the vesa driver but its going to be a home server running headless anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Windows Home Server for SlimServer

Pros: This makes an excellent Windows Home Server if you are looking for one that is inexpensive to own and operate, and need it only for streaming audio to Slimserver units. It's very small, quiet, and is very easy to install WHS and Slimserver (SqueezeCenter) on. My Kill-A-Watt unit says this unit uses an average of 14.3 watts during normal operation. Also works great as file storage location for remote access.

Cons: So far I have not found anything about the unit that I dislike. The keyboard and mouse are cheaply made but I don't need them for a WHS. Probably would not be a good WHS if you plan to use WHS to do backups of the computers on your system.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as an Open Box item from Newegg. Despite their dire warnings about no accessories being included with Open Box purchases, my EEE Box came with EVERYTHING and nothing had even been removed from the original packaging except the owners manual. I guess the Open Box warning is their disclaimer so you can't complain if something is missing...

This EEE Box will boot from a USB device so it was very easy to install WHS from a DVD reader that I had removed from another computer some time ago. Just hooked the DVD up to the EEE Box using a USB IDE/SATA adapter and booted WHS.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet!!!

Pros: These are sweet little machines! My client ordered 4 of them and they're run great! Had one with a very noisey fan, but I sent it back and Newegg is sending a new one. Customer service is tops!

Size is great! Speed is great! Built in Wifi is awesome! Build quality great! Comes with desktop stand and a mount for putting under a desk, up on a wall or whatever! Great little machine!

Cons: No real way to upgrade these, but you don't really need to if you're just using it for basic office type computing...this is not a gaming machine!

Keyboard is a small form factor and takes some getting used to, but hey it's included so who am I to complain!

More USB ports and an access panel on the side would be great!

Other Thoughts: I'm not certain if the memory is upgradable...for my client's uses, it wasn't needed, so I haven't researched it...if you're wanting more memory in yours, I would suggest researching that first...

4 out of 5 eggsThe Silent Performer

Pros: Very tight package and attractive Design. Very easy to learn linux distro, excellent for newbies. Has all necessary ports you will need. Plenty of hard drive space and RAM for the price. Intel atom processor is a strong performer for the cost and energy ratio. WHISPER quiet, I mean really this thing is not audible. Uses LITTLE energy.

Cons: Very weak Wireless performer. My Wi-Fi signal fluctuates between 20-60%. No Optical Drive. Few ports. Cheap look and feeling keyboard and mouse packaged.

Other Thoughts: I was thinking of giving it a three because of the Wireless issues this box is having but it would not be fair because for 300 dollars you can't do better if your looking for a simple desktop for webmail, video streaming and surfing. This was a gift to my parents and they alone area testament of how easy it is to learn your way around this machine.
