4 out of 5 eggsperfect light-duty desktop

Pros: While certainly no powerhouse, this PC fills the light-duty desktop duty perfectly, providing web, email and light office work. It was paired up with a Samsung P2250 monitor and loaded up w/ Ubuntu 10.04. It was fully functional with zero fuss.

There seems to be just enough memory to run a browser, an email client and a word processor.

Cons: Criticisms of the keyboard, mouse and front panel are well founded. Given other products in this price range, this drops them one egg.

Other Thoughts: Not sure how this unit would fare under Win7.

2 out of 5 eggsGetting old and showing it

Pros: The Atom CPU: Should NEVER be compared to a modern CPU in terms of POWER of Processing. The 230/270 are 32b and are EQUAL in capabilities to a PIII 550mhz. This combo of GMA945 chips and 270 make for a lousy 2010 variant. Asus, MSI, ChenZeng all use the SAME BOARD. Even Dell, HP use the SAME BOARD. Scorewise you'll get a GeekBench overall of 200-230, Same as a 1998 circa PIII computer.

Pros... There are really no pros for this type of computer. ION graphics make it worth it otherwise don't bother. Intel MSRP of the CPU only is $1.92 USD per 100.

Cons: Your buying a NEW 1998 Performance computer and expecting it to perform well in 2010... Don't. I love the "Email and basic web" used to describe these computers.... Yea, MY PHONE does that well too. Don't waste your time or money.

Other Thoughts: The Atom N330 is a little better but it performs more like a PIII 933. These WILL NOT run Netflix, Hulu or anything with Flash well AT ALL. The new N4xx series are just an die-shrink of the N2xx series, SAME performance.

What are the they good for? Tricking consumers into a cute little box to get "Email and basic web". You can help the environment, buy a refurbished or used computer, get a better package with better features and save.

Seriously people, stop buying this junk. Get an iPad or Archos tablet. This is outdated junk. The Chipset came out in 2004. The CPU was designed for car computers, phones, and your fridge.

You can do better, and so can Asus.

4 out of 5 eggsNice little unit, great size

Pros: My intention was to purchase this box and use it on an internal network at home as a PBX running trixbox. Physically the size is great. The little door on the front was a little too cheap and wiggly for my taste. For some reason it came loose after an hour or two of me handling the thing. The top attachment peg popped out of the case. I tried to reinsert gently but snapped it right off. That's one egg down for a flimsy design. Then I got down to installing. I wanted to wipe the hard drive and install but I don't have an external usb CDROM. I ordered a USB to SATA connector so I could use a spare SATA CDROM that I have but I hadn't ordered it with this PC so I was stuck with a USB stick. It took me a couple of days but I found Multibootiso.exe. Worked great in setting up a USB thumb as bootable and installing just about any iso based installation. Search for guides. Setting it up is easy. Once I got that fired up I was able to install trixbox (continued in other thoughts)

Cons: Flimsy front panel snapped right off

Other Thoughts: but I had to use v2.6.2.3. The newest version failed with errors. One other issue was the ethernet card (JM250) wasn't natively supported in the Centos kernel. I found the kmod-jme rpm at elrepo and installed and the ethernet came right up after reboot. So now I have a slick little headless PBX running trixbox, and it's a little smaller than a cigar box. Does anyone even know what a cigar box looks like these days?
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. Seems like it's a good little system for dedicated servers that don't need a lot of processing power. Now I just need to get up to speed on trixbox.
