4 out of 5 eggsGood, small, low cost

Pros: Very small form factor, good functional basic computer for light duty.

Cons: The ASUS bloatware included cost me several hours of diagnosing a conflict with some Windows software (Microchip PicKit3) that just didn't work on this computer (but worked on many others) until I uninstalled the ASUS software. Do yourself a favor and uninstall everything in the ASUS program folder as soon as possible.

The single bolt included to secure the stand to the unit is easy to miss in the packaging. It is also not long enough and required a lot of effort to get it to start, and I ended up cracking the plastic base in an effort to get a secure mate.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent, but fails at 1080p

Pros: Small, fairly quiet and good value for a mid range HTPC.

Cons: Can't handle 1080p video (at least using the pre-installed windows 7 home and VLC). Dropping the OS and HDD to lower the price would be ideal.

Annoying to take apart. Prying the cheap plastic cover off is tough to do without scratching it.

Stand is flimsy. Weight of HDMI cable causes the unit to pivot due the the single point of contact when using the stand.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace a Zotac running the 350 processor and a slightly lesser video card. I was running Openelec on the Zotac and full 1080p h264 files caused terrible problems, eventually overheating and destroying the unit. I hoped this upgrade would solve that problem. It did not. Upgraded to 4gb of RAM and that helped a little, but still stutters during scene transitions or action sequences that change a lot of pixels at once. At least it didn't melt. I needed something to stream a large variety of video types from various network locations and this does that perfectly, so long as they are not 1080p.

I may try switching to the Openelec OS and see if trimming the useless fat of Windows improves performance, but I fear the horsepower just isn't there.

4 out of 5 eggsGood HTPC, but WiFi is horrible

Pros: Easy setup, decent specs for an HTPC, small form factor fits well in media cabinet, no noise (or so little that I can't detect it), included wireless keyboard and mouse have good range - I can use them from the couch. XBMC runs fine on it and videos play nicely. I also tested VLC streaming from a NAS and it was fine (when using a wired connection, see cons for my WiFi experience).

Cons: WiFi copy and streaming speeds make using WiFi unrealistic. When it's sitting next to my dual band router I can get reported copy speeds of about 6-8 MB/s. A ~4 GB file takes about 16 minutes to copy which is respectable, but certainly not stellar. Move it on the other side of a wall and 15' away from the router and the speeds drop to about 80-100 KB/s. The same file reported about 22 hours to copy. Forget about streaming.

Other Thoughts: I never really planned to stream to this device since it has a decent sized hard drive, but I did want to set up some automated copying to and updating of XBMC. Right now I have a network cable strung out the door of my office, down the wall in the family room, and across the front of my cabinets and fireplace. Our house is not wired for networking (wish that was standard) so I have some 500 Mbps powerline adapters on order and also some calls in to low voltage installers to see about getting a network drop out there. I'm just hoping to get decent copy speeds as I still don't plan to stream much.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Little Computer

Pros: This Eee Box worked right out of the box. It came with a sleek wireless keyboard and mouse. Thanks to this, now it is possible to use my HDTV as a computer, waching whatever is out there in You Tube, ect...

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: If you do not have HDMI cable, do not forget to get one if you want to connect it to your HDTV

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome piece of hardware

Pros: easy setup, compact size, high performance, cool and functional design

Cons: didn't found any cons so far

Other Thoughts: This is the best piece of electronics I've purchased in many years. Perfect for watching HDTV, fast browsing, file storage and file sharing across my home network.
It's a bit more expensive than some other alternatives, but it's definitely worth it.
