5 out of 5 eggsCheap HTPC!!!

Pros: Plays well with Win7 and Ubuntu 13.10. Very well-built, attractive and extremely quiet for the price. Easy to access internals for upgrades/service. Plenty of USB ports. Excellent no-nonsense HTPC or nettop.

Cons: The wireless card is largely junk. The optimus graphics system obviously works flawlessy with windows wherein the drivers are well-developed. With Ubuntu things are at a more experimental stage. You can run nvidia-prime which enables the discrete gpu to run full time (enabling the benefits of vdpau.) Doing so, however, will overheat the system. Nonetheless, the integrated gpu does a fine job of decoding hd video. Meanwhile, you can enable the discrete video card on an app-by app-basis using bumblebee whenever you need some extra punch. Not good enough for gamers (who would game on this system anyway?) but more than enough snort for an HTPC. We should see improved support for optimus cards in LInux within the next year.

Other Thoughts: There are three things you need with this kit: 4gb of ram, some kind of hdd/ssd (or sdhc!) to install to, a wireless card (or just plug it into your router) and, lastly, if you're buying an external drive, keep in mind this system is USB 3.0 only, will need an adapter for ESATA drives you might already have.

5 out of 5 eggsA great little box

Pros: Quiet, low power draw, inexpensive, adequate for most tasks. Running Linux Mint 15 like a champ - wireless works out of the box, nVidia 310 driver has no problems with the GeForce 610M the unit has, streams HD, drives a 1280x1024 monitor with no hiccups. Comes with Win7 drivers, if you need them.

Cons: Comes without a drive or memory (not really a con, just the way the unit is shipped). Can be challenging to get the memory and storage into the unit. YouTube is your friend here - search on "Eee Box 1033". There are a couple of good (and short, <5 minute) videos on how to do this. Watch one fully before starting. I was able to install 4GB of G-Skill RAM and a 500GB WD Scorpio HDD in less than 15 minutes.

Other Thoughts: I used this as a low power replacement for an aging desktop, for light-medium tasks (acts as a desktop, SSH server, VPN server, *light* gaming). I'm loving it. Draws a quarter of the power of the desktop it replaced, fits nicely on the back of the monitor with the supplied mounting bracket.

5 out of 5 eggssolid media pc

Pros: Has been running XBMCuntu like a champ for the last 6 months. HD Playback is very good from USB harddrive. All hardware worked with Ubuntu out of the box.

Cons: Case was a little harder to open and close than I expected. Not that big of a deal, considering I only had to open and close it once.

Would be nice to have optical audio, but HDMI audio drives our audio receiver well enough for a small movie room with no noticeable lag.

Other Thoughts: Paired with a 64GB SSD Vertex for main internal drive to help it fly.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerfull Powersaver

Pros: Small form can be mounted nearly anyplace, Great mounting device that can turn to allow connections to be made without crawling around under a desk/shelf. Still a fan of the Intel ATOM especially these newer dual cores, you cannot beat the Price/Performance ratio making these a great choice for HTPC's. The NVidia graphics is much better than the Intel version... running Ubuntu (Linux) with XBMC the NVidia is a must and well worth it.

Cons: I do wish that two of the USB 2.0 ports were on the rear, along with the Audio and Mic jacks... it would save having cables wrapped around to the front all the time.

Other Thoughts: There is no LED for HDD activity, not really a con as most who would use this as an HTPC would not really want that flashing at them all the time anyway, but sometimes it is nice to be able to tell if there is actually activity on the HDD. There has been no compatability issues with Ubuntu on any of the hardware, all working out-of-the-box. Add an optical sound link and this would be exceptional.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well though not as advertised

Pros: It's a quick enough box for what it needs to do. I experienced no lag issues on any videos I threw at it on Xbmcbuntu 12.2 (just had to do the lightdm sound fix but thats standard).

Cons: The device actually comes with an Nvidia Geforce 610m instead of the advertised 640m. It also doesn't come with a hard drive though its listed as including a 320GB drive.

Other Thoughts: I was replacing my old media pc with this one so I had the ram and hard drive already which let me get it setup quickly. Asus also uses a nice UEFI bios which makes flashing the bios update very easy. Overall i'd give it a 4/5 as it does everything it needs to. Just don't be lead astray by the faulty specs.
