1 out of 5 eggsDon't do it!

Pros: I'm happy when it works.

Cons: Sent in for repairs for the third time in a year. The graphics card was replaced twice, but it feels like a stopgap until my warranty runs out.

Other Thoughts: I have 3 ASUS tablets, and the RT-AC68R router, but I seriously doubt I will EVER purchase (or recommend) another ASUS PC.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsASUS support is horrible

Pros: Not bad, if there are no problems.

Cons: Support and warranty...forget about it. Month 5...HDD failing, corrupt. Recovery USB disk would not load. ASUS will not provide OS (W8.1). They said they would exchange HDD if bad. I bought new W8.1 and new HDD. Now they say they wont replace bad HDD.

Other Thoughts: Never buy a system where 1) They do not supply you with the actual software on a separate DVD. 2) From a place where they do not provide any service or support locally, 3) From ASUS if you expect any sort of service or support.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsleaves too much to be desired

Pros: fast, compact, and relatively quiet

Cons: The PC didn't have a "genuine Windows" tag; if I have to have it repaired, most reputable shops won't touch it. The Windows product key isn't given and Asus tech support couldn't supply it. It only came with Win 8.0. It was easy to upgrade to 8.1 but the recovery files, if I ever have to use them, will revert it to 8.0. Recovery disks aren't supplied but you can download the info to a memory stick, although Asus tech support couldn't tell me how much memory is required for this. The case has a little tag taped to it across the case opening saying if you open this case you void your warranty. Do I have to wait until the warranty expires before adding an additional hard drive or something?

Other Thoughts: I think I'll stick to Dell PC's in the future

3 out of 5 eggsNo Windows Activation Key

Pros: a fast machine

Cons: Warranty is voided if you open the hood. Windows authentication tag is not on the machine and Activation Key is not available, so if you take it into a repair shop they may refuse to work on it. Recovery disks are not provided. There is a procedure to burn the recovery onto a stick from a hidden partition, but I've got no idea how big a stick. I wrote ASUS tech service and they didn't even understand the question. DUH! They also could not provide the Windows authentication key.

Other Thoughts: I think I'll stick with Dell in the future. Their tech service is a little better.

5 out of 5 eggsamazing pc

Pros: Very quiet mine makes no noise at all. high speed i can play all the top of the line games/simulators maxed out gfx with no problems. 300fps. i have windows 7 installed on this machine and its amazing. windows 8 would not play games or simulators well.

Cons: no eject button on burner have to eject via the menu and has windows 8 installed. easy switch to windows 7 ultimate. have to download windows 7 drivers by looking up the mother board drivers. that's the only pain but way worth it.

Other Thoughts: needs a windows 7 option its way faster on this computer.

4 out of 5 eggsRoom for Improvement

Pros: 16GB stock ram is great, and the 2TB hard drive gives plenty of space for all of my games, music, and video data. The new i7 processor is not a huge difference over the previous ivy bridge generation, but it is nice.

A ton of connectivity options. Very clean internal wiring and layout for a commercial desktop, with PLENTY of space for upgrades. The stock sound drivers are also surprisingly good.

Cons: The computer is noticeably loud. I would have given it a 4.5 egg rating were it not for this issue. After examining each of the components, I found the biggest problem to be the GPU fan. I temporarily removed it and the noise went back to a substantially more bearable level, though the heat sink and psu fan were still slightly noisy (but not enough to lower the rating further, in my opinion).

I wish the desktop had a toolless chassis, but with the amount of space to upgrade, I can't really complain that much about it.

The hard drive's read and write speeds aren't much to brag about, but it is 2TB, and it gets the job done. I'd recommend a SSD or SSHD upgrade at some point in the future.

Other Thoughts: Bought this PC primarily for heavy video editing. I can run the full Adobe suite with no problems, and rendering times within Premiere Pro and After Effects CS6 are blazing fast.

As far as gaming is concerned, I was able to run GW2, SC2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution on high settings with no lag.

Windows 8 is a very intuitive operating system, and I am thoroughly enjoying the transition from my old Mac OSX setup.

Like I stated before, the graphics card is the biggest problem with this PC. For $1000, the system should be quiet as a mouse. However, I enjoy personally upgrading my PCs, and I was very impressed with how clean the internals were and how much space Asus gave me to work with. The 3GB GPU can be easily deceiving, so don't be fooled. It's a spinoff of an older GT series card, not the GTX gaming/graphics standard. It also runs on GDDR3 memory, not the current GDDR5 standard.

I gave this system 4 stars instead of the 3 or lower that I would have given any other desktop because of a) the expansion space and the VERY nice motherboard and chipset and b) Asus has had a very good track record in terms of component quality and value. Yes, the GPU is disappointing, but I will be quick to upgrade it, and in place of it, I've got the new i7 processor, a blu-ray combo drive, and a ton of memory and storage space.

You can get a better value for a desktop in this range, but for my needs, it works. If you are looking at this desktop primarily for gaming or graphics performance, LOOK ELSEWHERE. Sure, you can upgrade it easy, but many PCs offer better stock gpus at a lower price point. This is a good workhorse computer that is suited for people who would like to do their own upgrades in the future.

3 out of 5 eggsOkay, not great

Pros: Plenty of USB ports and monitor ports. One of the fastest CPUs to date - Intel Core i7 4770. 16GB Ram should be able to handle most things I throw at it. My 8GB Dell XPS handled the video editing fine, so should this. The UEFI bios gui is nice.

I do feel ASUS bundled add-on software is higher quality than Dell.

Cons: The fans are a little too loud for my liking. The chassis fan by default runs at 1200RPM and the system is about at loud at a running refrigerator or a typical loud customized pc.

I went into the UEFI bios and to my disappointment the ASUS Q-Fan control was already enabled on the system and CPU fans. As an experiment, I turned off Q-Fan and the fans run at full speed - very loud. So I think this box is going to be at quite as it going to get.

The DELL XPS 8300 is much more quite system will just a faint hum.

Other Thoughts: I partially bought this computer thinking it would include the Asus Power Pack and Wireless Charger tray. I did not read the fine details on ASUS website that these features only come with special versions of the M51 computer. I bought the most expensive M51 (to date) from newegg (M51AC-US002S) but to my surprise it did not come with these features. I am highly disappointed that I didn't not make a more informed purchase.
