1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed with ASUS

Pros: I'll list a pro after I get it back from my RMA claim.

Cons: To start with Newegg shipped it to my copied my billing address and change my default shipping address to it shipping it to the wrong location. The computer didn't boot right out of the box. I could get to the BIOS but when it tried to boot I got a blank screen. I even swapped the HDs to boot to my old comp and it did the same. Had to shell out $20 to ship it to ASUS for and RMA and I just found out they shipped it to the wrong place too. In the last year I've done an RMA on 3 ASUS motherboards for work and my ASUS tablet. Starting to doubt my brand loyalty since the only ASUS product I have that I didn't do an RMA on in my monitor.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor customer service & wireless keyboard/mouse issue lag issue

Pros: NIce & simple design. Great specs & price for a non-gaming desktop PC. Relatively quiet. Just like any other built PC with Windows 8 (purchased legally), you can upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free (in the app store). We've had this PC for 7-months now & it's been running fine besides not being able to use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo.

Cons: Can't see the eject button/markings for the DVD tray. Just push the bottom right most side of the DVD loading tray to open. Absolutely horrible customer service! Issues with wireless keyboard & mouse lag despite trying two different models. Read below. Loading takes slightly longer than a comparable Dell I purchased at the same time with same specs.

Other Thoughts: I inquired directly with Asus for a Windows 8 install disc so I can do a fresh install due to having issues with wireless keyboard/mouse lag yet they wouldn't provide one & there's no included DVD recovery disc. I should've bought the same Dell desktop PC (same specs & price as this Asus back in November) I got for my father since they were more than willing to ship a Windows 8 install disc for free. They even shipped it overnight! Love Asus laptops, motherboards & tablets...but I'd never buy another (built) desktop PC from them again. Well, Lenovo & Asus that is.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Pc, but ....

Pros: Great basic, super fast machine. Easy setup. No Bloatware to speak of.
Good price. Fast shipping.

Cons: No eject button for the dvd rom drive. Have to use the "right click \ eject" function on the drive to get the tray to pop open.
No recovery disks, and no documented way to make them, although there is a recovery partition on the HD
Tried to boot to my bootable Acronis disk, but could not. There is no way that I could see to set the boot order in the bios, or a hot key for boot options so that you can boot to the dvd rom drive or usb device.
Called Asus tech support to get help with that. On phone for an hour. Finally gave up. Never got an image of the machine.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for the desk

Pros: Good brand for the most part with quality components much the same as I would put together in a ground up. Runs cool and quiet. I too was looking at building my own, but decided on purchasing a complete machine and got this as a "gift" from the wife. I have other unit that are ASUS that never needed any parts replaced or tech support. That being said hope this will be the same. I managed to get two more 3.5 drives in it above and below the SATA that came with it. future changes will be up the memory to the 32g max and maybe change it out to a blue ray burner. Will add a fan or liquid cooler too it will need it by then.

Cons: Wow first it came with Windows 8.0 and no legal product key sticker anywhere so no IT group will like this. Had to use software to retrieve the key. The sticker on PC front states "buy this PC free upgrade to 8.1" but Microsoft wouldn't give it to the OEM license imbedded in registry. The ASUS website states this model can get it. after a week and a half two open support tickets to ASUS and a second phone call to Microsoft logged into MS they then told me to do it through the properties "get more features..." ASUS support didn't know this. they replied it may not be compatible and gave me back the link I gave them stating this M51AC model gets the upgrade. Then there is the no physical recovery DVDs. $50 if I want to buy one but now its 8.1 what dvd would I get? then USB 3.0 not fully working with everything 3.0 you plug in, but that is a Windows 8 problem. At times I thing I should just load Windows 7 pro on it. Support should be more like...Support and know their product and website better.

Other Thoughts: May just build that next one ground up or make my own combos or barebone. I still do rate ASUS high. but maybe not there support. Need to turn off USB port so keyboard and mouse don't wake it. but map for which usb is which, in bio and manual not so helpful.

5 out of 5 eggsNice machine

Pros: Fast machine! Video Board (Under $50 video card) is good for non-gaming use. I was looking at building my own, but decided on purchasing a complete machine. I looked at all of the software & components, if purchased separately, buying the machine was slightly cheaper. Four open internal eSATA ports.

Cons: No RAID and three (two open) PCI slots (2, one blocked) PCI-E X1 and (1) PCI-E x16. The blocked PCI-E X1 is by the Video Card heat sink. Only one open 3-1/2 internal bay and one open 5-1/4 external bay. The open 5-1/4 can only be used for a DVD drive. Card Reader is only for SD / MMC, MS / PRO, & CF. Power Supply is only a 350 Watt

Other Thoughts: It would be nice to have the Card Reader do Extreme Digital, Micro SD, and have an external eSATA port. Also a 500 Watt Power Supply would be nice. I like the security of RAID 1, so I am adding a RAID PCI-E x1 card and two 1TB WD Black drives.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value!

Pros: Good quality components and very cool, quiet build. The desktop internals are neatly organized and easy to modify/upgrade. There is enough space to add 3.5" drives without temporarily removing the memory or other hardware.

I am new to Windows 8, but it is easy to customize and change the base shell to something more similar to windows vista. ASUS has almost no bloatware pre-loaded on the desktop.

Cons: I was somewhat disappointed that there are no physical recovery dvds. It appears as though all recovery is included only as a hidden partition on the hard-drive.

This is not a huge problem, but I had an ASUS laptop from years ago that had both a hidden recovery partition and recovery dvds. Providing both methods of recovery was a great practice, and I am sad to see that ASUS did not provide both methods with this purchase.

Other Thoughts: As this is a Windows 8 PC with UEFI, some users may experience issues with getting their legacy video cards to play nice with the motherboard. It appears as this system has trouble loading Windows 8 with older AMD video cards even with the fast boot and legacy boot OPROM selected in the BIOS. If you do plan on upgrading the stock GTX620, I would recommend upgrading with a Nvidia graphics card.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sam

Recovery DVDs are not so common these days. You can even check other pc brands and they would tell you the same advice—create your own recovery discs, while another option will also tell you to simply press some combination of keys on the keyboard while rebooting and it will wipe out your hard drive to factory setting. Computers’ Operating Systems and BIOS’ interface are actually becoming easier to operate. If you really need recovery DVDs, we listen and we understand; they are available on our ASUS e-Store: http://us.estore.asus.com/ Simply type in Recovery DVD and you should get some results. You can also narrow it down by model# series. For further assistance, please contact me at cl-celeste@asus.com and please include case#2906725 in the subject line. 3 out of 5 eggsNo Wireless Charging

Pros: I'll update when I've had more time with it.

Cons: The case has a nice cupped top to hold a phone, but this model doesn't have a wireless charging transmitter as noted as a feature in the Newegg description.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Ed,

I’m sorry if there’s any confusion; but one of the many features of this model is that it has “SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports for charging devices up to 50% quicker and transferring data up to ten times faster than previous generation USB1.” It never mentioned “wireless charging transmitter.” Should you require assistance with this topic, please contact me at cl-celeste@asus.com with ref#1072-12863 in the subject line.

Sincerely,
Celeste
