1 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware

Pros: It has all of the features that I needed.

Cons: Poor quality control. No hard drive busy light. No DVD busy light.
ASUS customer service is all happy talk, no action.

Other Thoughts: I purchased 3 of these. One computer ... no problems. the second computer would not power on. The power button was not in it's bracket. Removed the plastic front panel, secured the switch and it started fine. The third computer was working fine until a second Ethernet LAN card was installed in the PCI slot. Bad card slot, pins crushed and shorted. ASUS requires that the entire computer be returned for repair including hard drive and passwords. This computer was setup to control a city water system. The hard drive cannot be shared with any third party. The situation was explained to ASUS and they said they would get back to me. They never did. I bought another mother board and made the repairs myself.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows Home Premium OS! (Workaround in review)

Pros: You get what you pay for, so don't complain that it isn't a great machine. This is a basic computer for low end use. It's good enough for your office desk worker or someone that uses a computer for light surfing and emails.

Cons: As stated in other reviews I got two machines that were sold, boxed and tagged on the case as 7 Pro, and have Home Premium installed.
Called Newegg, sat on hold, got routed to ASUS support, sat on hold, talked to someone in Europe, and basically got told to contact Newegg for an RMA. Hour of my time and one egg gone.

As a last ditch effort, I ran Anytime Upgrade and plugged in the 7 Pro key on the case. It worked, so that is the workaround for this obviously common issue. Of course doing the upgrade took more time, and cost another egg.

We will see how that machine holds up and I may revise my review later if any other problems occur.

Other Thoughts: It's a low end machine, but that doesn't excuse ASUS for loading the wrong OS, providing poor customer support, and trying to SELL me a recovery disk.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows 7...Home Premium?!

Pros: Good system for the price, comes with a 7 pro license.

Cons: The factory image is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Other Thoughts: The license sticker had a 7 Pro product key, but 7 Home Premium is what was loaded.

We purchased 4 systems and so far 2 of 4 have it on there, I haven't checked the others yet. It's not a bit deal to me as I was probably just going to wipe them anyway...just really sloppy on Asus' part.

2 out of 5 eggsDisk read errors

Pros: My Desktop worked just fine. So I ordered one for my brother.
fast shipping, packed good.

Cons: First power on showed SMART = replace drive/reload.
Reseated cables to HD. Then intermittant disk read errors, causing reboot or complete lockup. Finally got system configured and 70 some Microsoft fixes applied. Still probs with read errors, sometimes can't find boot device. Called Asus support.. reloaded from DVD's. Still read errors.

Other Thoughts: Got RMA# to ship back complete unit. They would not RMA the HD alone. Also they would not pay for returning a new defective PC; only pay return after repair.
Out of the box, defective unit should be replaced/repaired with free shipping both ways. Much time wasted with going back to restore points, reloading patches, etc.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Purchase

Pros: expandable
good budget pc
pretty quiet
usb 3.0 and hdmi ports
full mini tower case w/3 xtra drive bays
350 watt internal power supply
can add full height cards
3rd gen i3 processor adds 3D support
3rd gen HD2500 graphics
works great with my 1080p HDTV and VGA D-Sub monitor

Cons: have to push DVD tray to close it - no close button
typical cheap keyboard and mouse

Other Thoughts: So far I love it. Can't speak to long term reliability but its a great system and glad I chose this one over others.

Placed order Sun am and had it Tue afternoon via free shipping - totally awesome service from Newegg and UPS - it doesn't get any better than that.

The 3rd gen of i3 is not much of a diff in benchmarks but it does add 3D support and some other features and improves the performance of the HD 2500 graphics so it does have additional value over systems using 2nd gen processor. Something to keep in mind if you are comparing systems to buy.

One thing I find strange is that the button to open the dvd is no longer available to close it due to the way the front of the drive opens. You have to push the tray to close it.

Why do new PC's come with trial anti-virus when everyone has full AV Suites with their internet service? It makes no sense to me - just something to uninstall right off.
