4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Media Player

Pros: Excellent little PC for a HTPC Media Player. Flashed the firmware and installed OpenELEC with Plex, up and running in no time (literally half an hour). Plays 1080 content over WiFi with 7.1 surround no trouble at all.

Cons: No remote control. Using my phone for now. Have a FLIRC and a FireTV remote on order, so we'll see if either work.

Other Thoughts: Wish it was $150 like it use to be, but overall, I feel good value as a full featured Plex client.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Digital Signage

Pros: Low cost digital signage controller for use with risevision software. There is a chrome plugin for risevision player, a few tweaks to auto run and you are good to go.

Cons: Seems to be no wake on lan, but that isn't a huge deal for something that can just be left on 24/7

Other Thoughts: Great value, so cheap that you can just buy spares in case you every have hardware issues, no warranty or support needed.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent lowend HTPC setup/net client

Pros: Low price for a complete package.

Replaceable SSD (m.2 ngff type 2242 max I've seen on these are 256GB).

2x204 SODIMM 1.35v (DDR3L) sockets(MUCH appreciated over the gimped chromebooks with soldered RAM).

Cons: Higher end CPUs increase in cost too much v. the haswell celerons, e.g. the i3-4010U m0075u and the incredibly egregiously overpriced i7 variant.

Other Thoughts: Dual booting chrome os(it's 38.xx while my i3/C720 is 39.xx) and openelec/kodi for now. Planning to replace SSD w/128GB already swapped out the anemic 16GB for the 32GB leftover from my C720 upgrade(128GB - chrooting xfce ubuntu to turn it into a more generally useful notebook).

Chrome os, net client, to me? Meh. Not much use at the end of the day for that, but I'll probably leave a small slice for chrome os which I am betting will never end up being used v. constantly in openelec/kodi, BUT THAT is WHY I purchased this, as a small lightweight HTPC.

(-1 egg was for poor product pricing v. CPU variants although ATM for me the 2955U celery is enough, but I could easily see other needing/wanting what more complete core variants offer at non-ridiculous prices.)

Also, stay away from ARM if they ever offer those unless they're ~$50 and you have low expectations or already know how weak ARM is and poorly supported by linux(blame ARM/SoC mfgs/iGPU licensors for providing limited/shoddy drivers and little/no interest in OSS drivers, but at the end of the day ARM is just a poor CPU design no matter how you slice it.)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Box

Pros: I was using my main tower to run as a client for KODI/XBMC in the livingroom. But man oh man, the fans were so loud I would have to crank the volume up just to drown out the jet engine sound.

I replaced my main tower with this chromebox (running OpenELEC) and it went from sounding like a jet engine to sounding more like a purring kitten.

Most importantly, OpenELEC runs very smoothly on this chromebox. I have not had any issues. And once you Google the 'how to instructions' OpenELEC was easy to install as well.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I plan to replace all of my clients with one of these compact, light and quiet chromeboxes.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap and works well, fully upgradeable hardware, I bought to replace my 8yr old media PC. Works very well the only disadvantage is no way to get more codecs or a different media player.

Cons: limited codecs, can't set up a network printer with out a PC, power button very difficult to turn on made it so I couldn't mount it on the back of my TV like I wanted to.

5 out of 5 eggsI got 2 one new and one open box

Pros: very small
has 1 mem stick so adding 1 2gig stick bumps it to 4gig and it helps
very low power requirements
i run as much as i can off of a small off grid solar system so getting the job done with as little power as needed is a consideration for me and this box dose it
because i do like my 38" TV at 1080p used as a screen
in my bedroom for NetFlix and all other on line needs (banking youtube email paying bills and research for kids homework)
this boxe dose it and I also have one of these boxes in living room for family use
this thing sips power compared to even my AMD A6-5400k system that has basic components
i picked up the second one of these as a open box idem for cheep and it will be replacing my AMD 5600k system
and the HDMI works perfect when using the TV sound

Cons: not any
i know what a Chrome Box can and can not do and it fulfills my needs 100%

Other Thoughts: research if this is your first chrome box or chrome book and know what you are buying
the chrome box/chrome book are for 99% web base uses and will do just about any thing on line you need to do
+ if you need It will do some lite office work and text docs
as of right now to my Knowledge the chrome system will not access a DVD with DRM for playing DVD's so if you are looking for a full fledged Media pc a Chrome device may not be for you
but i do use one as a media pc and 99% of all my media pc needs are netflix movies and YouTube and i do have the Corsair Gaming Audio Series SP2500 High-power 2.1 PC Speaker System in living room and i love it
but second box is on TV in bedroom just using TV sound

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Box

Pros: This is a great little box. Boots up in less than 10 seconds and great for surfing the net. I bought two of them and have one hooked to the TV and the other one in my computer room.
The fact that I was able to pick them up for $114 each made this an even better buy. You can upgrade the memory and SSD in this which will make them a great linux machine in the future.

Cons: Have not found any cons yet.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible HTPC

Pros: Sips power through a straw
Powerful graphics card handles MKV, MP4 and BluRay with ease
GigE streams local content quickly and easily
Integrated Bluetooth easily enables keyboards, mice and remotes

Cons: Not 100% fanless (but awfully quiet!!)
Lacks SPDIF; only delivers analog audio through headphone jack
USB 3.0 ports means some USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices need not apply....

Other Thoughts: I have a pair of book-sized HTPCs, one on an AMD E450 and one on Cubox i-series. The AMD HTPC runs Windows and handles video well, but takes too much (Windows 7) maintenance. The Cubox handles most video well, but was extremely difficult to customize. I wanted an HTPC that could run a simplified OS, didn't require a ton of work to maintain and could handle any variety of MKV, MP4 and streaming web content.
I am extremely pleased at the performance and versatility of the ASUS Chromebox. I installed OpenELEC in less than 5 minutes, and had XBMC indexing the content on my NAS almost immediately. It easily plays 1080 MKV from my NAS via GigE with no issues. YouTube and other streaming content plays smoothly.

It was nice to see the WiFi and Bluetooth worked out of the box, both on ChromeOS (before I flashed it) and on OpenELEC. It make setting up the HTPC in my living room a breeze, so I can use my Harmony remote, in conjunction with an older Microsoft eHome IR receiver. You can buy a Rosewill remote on Newegg for little or no cost, and put together an incredible HTPC setup.

The USB 3.0 ports support many USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices, but I was unable to get an old set of USB 1.1 gaming pads to work, as well as a USB 2.0 home automation interface (to control a light system). Most recent USB peripherals should work, but you'll want a backup plan. Similarly, if you only have SPDIF optical for your stereo receiver, you'll need a workaround there. The ASUS Chromebox lacks SPDIF, so you'll need to rely on HDMI for audio. I bought an HDMI to SPDIF audio converter, so I will see how that works shortly.

The unit is not fanless, but I could only drive enough to spin up the fan while playing a 1080 movie, and then it come on intermittently over the course of the movie. If I sat more than 3ft from the Chromebox, I could not hear the fan at all.

I intend to replace all of my HTPCs with Chromebox as my budget allows!
