1 out of 5 eggsWhy no HDCP DRM Support?

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: None

Cons: This is 2016. Why does this device have no support for HDCP with DRM, to provide for HiDef video capability with such sites as Google Play, Prime Instant, and NetFlix? It is a disgrace that all video from these sites is down-rezzed to SD due to lack of HDCP DRM support.

Other Thoughts: I cannot recommend this device to anyone. I wish I knew about this issue before I bought the device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear David,

Definitely, the Chromebit does support video-streaming in HD resolution. I do understand your concern regarding your issue not being able to video-stream HDCP with DRM in high-definition. This is an issue between the content providers and the internet service provider. I recommend that you contact these providers for a resolution. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than glad to help.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat small PC

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: Nice feel to keyboard and mouse (I have not had any problems with them as some had stated)
FAST in all ways, turning on and off, and on line
I like the security of chrome, Easy to use
Windows was becoming a pain in the back side, and is the most insecure OS

Cons: nothing yet

1 out of 5 eggsGreat product BUT Google says it is NOT HDCP compliant and so no HD paid content. True story. Read on.

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: - Very fast; great build quality; can upgrade mSATA and RAM (be sure to do your homework - you need DDR3L (1.35v) memory, and only certain mSATA cards work). Chrome OS absolutely ROCKS! I have this on my big screen TV - it is a total media solution! ....uh, except for on GIANT problem. Plays 4K content incredibly well. Keyboard and mouse work very reliable from about 15 feet back - after that, they drop. Keyboard and mouse have okay build quality - not top shelf but should satisfy many users.

Cons: This device is not HDCP compliant. Simply put, that means it tells all the main media services to throttle down paid video content from HD to SD. So, you can go to youtube and watch as many HD and even 4K clips as you like, but the paid content broadcasts to this device at 480p. I screamed at google support for 4 hours over this. First they said it was my TV, then my ISP, blah blah blah. Finally, at Tier 3 support, they admit that the device is not on the list of approved HDCP devices and all content is reduced to SD. I try it side by side with my apple TV device on same TV, same inputs, same cable, same ISP, exact same user accounts. Paid HD content from Youtube, Shomi, Google Play, and Amason all play at 1080p on the Apple TV streamer (which is HDCP registered) and they all play SD on the Asus (which I confirmed with Asus is technically compatible with HDCP but is not registered as an HDCP device and so cannot accept HDCP registered video streams. Soooo close to the perfect solution but this is a real deal breaker. No HD content! Yikes.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kirk,

I totally agree that the Chromebox is a great product with very fast performance, great build quality and it is upgradeable. I do understand your concern regarding HD video streaming. The unit does stream HD video, please make sure the unit is running with the most current OS version and the display was setup correctly inside Settings. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than glad to help.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little Media Server!

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: This little guy LOVES TO RUN!
High performance (for the size)
OS replacement (Linux)

Cons: Needed a ram upgrade.

Hardware is wasted on ChromeOS (get rid of it)

Other Thoughts: This little guy runs GREAT with 16g of RAM. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148730)
Dump ChromeOS and replace with Linux (or windows if you prefer)

Not a gaming machine, but runs GREAT for home media center.
Probably would be a great home LAB environment!
I love this guy, will buy more!

5 out of 5 eggsCompact HTPC

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: Very compact, runs quiet, fast boot up, worry free from virus

Cons: Some times videos shows jittering

Other Thoughts: My primary purpose for this is to use as HTPC. i connected this to my Onkyo receiver. My TV is plasma 50 inch. Initially i noitced after connecction the edges are cropped out. I have to google online for a solution. After that it works great. You tube and netflix works very fast but some websites such as einthusian.com the videos are jittering. I opted I3 still I see some issues on the speed. How ever I noticed the sound and video quality on youtube/hulu/netflix is significantly better than roku. I think $200 is overkill for this. I would pay $100 otherwise its not that worth. I am going to keep it because its hastle of connecting laptop to reciever every time I want to surf on TV. Also note the reading text on TV is nightmare. The icons and lettters are too small to read on 50in TV from my coutch which is 10ft away. But you want to explore internet to watch videos which are not supportedd by chromecast or roku type streaming devices this is the only solution out there.

Also people commented asus tech support sucks, its not entirely true. I was able to get hold of tech support within 5min.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap 'n simple

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: The main goal was to replace an old windows for internet use only.
I just had to get a HDMI-DVI adaptor to reuse the old monitor.

Very easy to install.
The SSD is speed is great, it boots in seconds.
The system does not heat up, and is silent.
The box has a small form factor. So much nicer than an old tower.
The interface is simple and go straight to the point.
You can only use google/chome apps.
In case you do not have a gmail email, you can still use a guest login.
Less chance to get a virus than on windows, but we'll see later.

Cons: The printer options didn't convinced me, it only support "cloud printer" through google. I have a physical printer right there on the network or on USB and cannot print directly.

I would like an option to disable the password, but as it's using your gmail user/password, I understand that you want a minimum of access control.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome as a Media player

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: I am currently dual booting this device, with OpenElec. Boot up time is about 3 seconds from cold start. No lag in streaming using built in wifi. Does not heat up with heavy use. (8-10 hrs a day)

Cons: None. I have read that Some people have an issue with their keyboard but I haven't experienced it. Maybe it's because I'm using the USB port on the front of the box?

Other Thoughts: Great box should be rated higher, imo.

2 out of 5 eggsKeyboard and mouse suck.

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: The unit itself is amazing, I use it as a HTPC and stream everything from Netflix to HBO Go without issue.

Cons: Buy the cheaper version without the mouse or keyboard. My unit is setup just 5 ft from my couch and the keyboard struggle to keep a connection. I wish I could say the same for the mouse but it broke from falling off my coffee table. Keep in mind the coffee table is 1ft off the ground and the mouse was gently knocked off. I emailed the ASUS Customer Loyalty rep who was replying to the Newegg reviews and wanted to take him up on his offer to "help you and all others with these issues" but I never got a reply. Save your cash and go for the cheaper unit.

Other Thoughts: Save some cash by buying the unit without the mouse and keyboard.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Chrome OS platform

This review is from: ASUS Desktop PC CHROMEBOX-M075U Intel Core i3 4010U (1.7 GHz) 4 GB DDR3 16 GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 Shared memory Google Chrome OS

Pros: Chromebox is well designed with sufficient type and number of ports. Chrome OS is simple and elegant to use. Quiet too. Sufficiently detailed reviews about using chrome OS platforms (chromebooks) are available from many users on various sites and so most user experiences would mirror those.

My choice of i3 (and 4GB RAM) based platform was to make sure HD (720p) video is possible with google hangouts and HDMI connectivity to TV. The i3 processor has 2 cores and 2 threads/core which meets the requirements. The 4GB of RAM is probably good to have as well. With a HD capable webcam I was able to get 720p hangouts video at 30fps as expected. (For the geeks: type 'chrome://webrtc-internals' in a browser address bar during a hangout session to see various statistics including frame rate, bandwidth, etc)

Also, bundle included wireless keyboard and wireless mouse..

Cons: None at this time.....although I hope to see suitable plugins for certain apps I use in my android devices.

Those familiar and confortable with using the 'cloud' (google drive, google docs/slides/etc, chrome extensions, etc) instead of installed software should not see many issues.

Other Thoughts: Keyboard battery compartment cover, when installed, seemed to break the circuit by pressing on one of the batteries. Simple solution is to insert one's fingernail or a small thin object in the slit on the cover and to gently lift the compartment just a little. Keyboard works fine after that and no issues with repeated use.
