2 out of 5 eggsKeyboard and mouse suck.

Pros: The unit itself is amazing, I use it as a HTPC and stream everything from Netflix to HBO Go without issue.

Cons: Buy the cheaper version without the mouse or keyboard. My unit is setup just 5 ft from my couch and the keyboard struggle to keep a connection. I wish I could say the same for the mouse but it broke from falling off my coffee table. Keep in mind the coffee table is 1ft off the ground and the mouse was gently knocked off. I emailed the ASUS Customer Loyalty rep who was replying to the Newegg reviews and wanted to take him up on his offer to "help you and all others with these issues" but I never got a reply. Save your cash and go for the cheaper unit.

Other Thoughts: Save some cash by buying the unit without the mouse and keyboard.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Chrome OS platform

Pros: Chromebox is well designed with sufficient type and number of ports. Chrome OS is simple and elegant to use. Quiet too. Sufficiently detailed reviews about using chrome OS platforms (chromebooks) are available from many users on various sites and so most user experiences would mirror those.

My choice of i3 (and 4GB RAM) based platform was to make sure HD (720p) video is possible with google hangouts and HDMI connectivity to TV. The i3 processor has 2 cores and 2 threads/core which meets the requirements. The 4GB of RAM is probably good to have as well. With a HD capable webcam I was able to get 720p hangouts video at 30fps as expected. (For the geeks: type 'chrome://webrtc-internals' in a browser address bar during a hangout session to see various statistics including frame rate, bandwidth, etc)

Also, bundle included wireless keyboard and wireless mouse..

Cons: None at this time.....although I hope to see suitable plugins for certain apps I use in my android devices.

Those familiar and confortable with using the 'cloud' (google drive, google docs/slides/etc, chrome extensions, etc) instead of installed software should not see many issues.

Other Thoughts: Keyboard battery compartment cover, when installed, seemed to break the circuit by pressing on one of the batteries. Simple solution is to insert one's fingernail or a small thin object in the slit on the cover and to gently lift the compartment just a little. Keyboard works fine after that and no issues with repeated use.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk keyboard and bad customer service

Pros: Chromebox is great.. Running dual boot ChromeOS and OpenELEC like a champ.

Cons: HORRIBLE customer service from ASUS. Firstly , the Chromebox is great, see any other web review for that. However, the keyboard and mouse combo that is bundled with is absolute garbage. I spent an hour on the phone, 45 minutes of that was on hold, to have the same script repeated continually from the support technicians and a supervisor for the ASUS E-Family of products named Jahvone D.

The problem I am having is that the when the battery cover on the keyboard is clipped on it actually presses the batteries in too far and causes loss of continuity. I was hoping for a quick keyboard swap, but ASUS insists that I send the entire shipment back to them so “their technicians can assess and diagnose the problem.” After receiving and hooking up the keyboard I spent about 20 minutes troubleshooting the keyboard not working and only by chance tried it without the battery cover.

Again, very happy with the Chromebox itself, but the keyboard is junk and their customer service is absolutely hideous.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Size, Boot speed, simplicity, ASUS support

Cons: Shipping condition,

Other Thoughts: As an update to my previous review, ASUS came through again with great and fast support. I still have not figured out the keyboard issue, but they helped with the sound problem. The reason for -1 egg is mostly due to the condition of the packaging when it was recieved, luckily everything was in one piece, but Newegg really should have boxed it up with a little padding rather than shipping it in the thin ASUS box with a couple extra pieces of tape. I gave photos to ASUS when the rep contacted me... that box was MANGLED!

2 out of 5 eggsTrouble

Pros: Small size, silent, fast boot

Cons: buggy, wireless keyboard will not connect, does too little to cost this much

Other Thoughts: My biggest gripes about this unit is the sound cutting out for no reason. The only way to get it back on is to reboot the box. Also, as the other review stated, the keyboard will not connect no matter what you do. I can't believe I paid this much for a Chrome browser that in reality is barely functional. Without sound or keyboard a browser is useless. ALSO, the shipping box was open and pretty much destroyed when it arrived. It was just in the original ASUS shelf box and NOT in a cardboard newegg shipping box.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat except for sound issues

Pros: Pretty fast
Nearly silent
Low power consumption
Handles HD/4K
Easy to upgrade RAM, SSD

Cons: As others have mentioned elsewhere, sounds is often lost after system suspends. Only signing out and signing back in (or reboot) fixes it.

This is a major hassle.

Asus: Do you have a fix?

Other Thoughts: Couldn't get wireless keyboard to work. Bought a USB keyboard instead.
