4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for a MythTV Backend

Pros: Small, silent.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I needed a backend for MythTV, and this thing is perfect for the job. It's putting away running Arch Linux.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Little Unit

Pros: Compact little unit is about the size of the dead ZBox's I have retired, but looks a lot nicer. I hope it'll last longer... Like the fact that it has a 3.5" drive and is easily swapped, because I still think 8.1 is still a PIA, but wifey likes it, and it's her PC.

Cons: Wasn't free, but you can't complain about the price. A lot cheaper than a mac mini and looks as good or even better.

Other Thoughts: Going to try to hackintosh this thing with another hard drive and run OSx. Might have order the i5 unit to make it work.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working immediately

Pros: This machine was very easy to set up out of the box which was fortunate as it came with very little documentation.

Cons: Within a half hour of inactivity, the unit locked up and I had to hard restart it. It then started randomly hibernating and after a couple of restarts, it would not shut off. When I unplugged it and tried to reboot it, it would not power up. I returned it.

Other Thoughts: I thought about getting a replacement, but the poor packaging made me reconsider. Sending a computer in the manufacturer's box without additional packaging is a poor business practice.

5 out of 5 eggsCan it run SQL Server and SharePoint? Yes.

Pros: I wanted a low power and silent computer to host my home SharePoint 2013, SQL Server 2012, and some ASP.NET console and web applications along with some constantly used iSCSI targets.. I thought I'd try a Celeron since I heard i3+ CPUs heat up pretty good and then the fan can get loud, even in these small systems.

So I purchased this from Best Buy (the 40B-04 model which seems to have the same specs), added 16GB of SDIMMs and put in a SSD.

The results - it keeps up fine. It maxes out the CPU briefly, but rarely. I purchased another today along with another 512 SAMSUNG SSD (Samsung are the best, hands down). This one is for my wife who does document translation and video playing.

This plays videos just fine, even some downloaded 1080p high-def videos that are 6-8GB each. No problems. I have heard that although CPU speeds have not increased much lately, a 2006 1.5ghz is much slower and inefficient compared to todays 1.5ghz CPUs. This is a technical fact.

Cons: Since this is a Celeron, it is dead quiet with the fan 100% running. I prefer the jet engine sound so this is a con. Also, it does not play games like Skyrim well. I did not try this because I am not a mentally deficient person (or no one has told me yet). What else... ohh, it was too cheap. I like to waste my money and wish it had costed double.

Seriously, there really no cons for something with this feature set and price range.

Other Thoughts: I've gotten a second one. And I am thinking these would be good gifts - highly functional for people that would replace their older or larger desktop for basic use.
You can get a cheap laptop for the same price. But I bet these will last allot longer. Cheap laptops will just break.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat little machine

Pros: everything about it is a pro
hdmi with audio
fiber optical audio with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound capability
2 usb 3.0
4 usb 2.0
sd card reader
you can upgrade the ram to 16 g

Cons: it has a bit of difficulty with adding external drives I bought a samsung dvd rewriter drive and at first I couldn't use it I had to download a firmware update for it then I had trouble finding apps that would play dvds I ended up going to cyberlink and downloading powerdvd 14 30 day trial so that I can watch dvds but i also had to upgrade to win 8.1 pro before it would play dvds which the microsoft suppoort person gave me a disscount on the upgrade so that's good

Other Thoughts: all in all it's a great internet machine when you first get it but it's capable of a lot more than that I plan on sometime in the future to get an external blu ray burner drive which will be great for storage or to make HD home movie blu rays

4 out of 5 eggsTempting Form Factor Eventually Delivers

Pros: This tiny box about as big as a personal pizza.
Celeron Processor, price point acceptance. Celeron Dual Core isn't totally bad as I had hoped. This little desktop needs to looked at for what it is, not what it isn't.
Works well as a music streamer, Windows Media Player
Virtual Jukebox, Media Center PVR.

Cons: What this computer is not, is a multi-tasker, video rendering, or video gaming computer.
There is a little pamphlet that shows you how to turn on unit, hookup keyboard mouse, and monitor, changing memory, swapping HDD for SSD, but no specific questions answered, like how do you access recovery partition.
Do you make backup discs, or can you make a USB backup, non of this answered. Asus sure could take a lesson from HP regarding User Manual.

Other Thoughts: I wrote an Email to ASUS customer service, and their reply was to use system restore. So how do you make a recovery drive....they didn't have an answer.
I discovered you have to use 16 GB USB drive, using Windows Recovery, click create recovery drive, and the rest is self evident. I managed to do a recovery to a Samsung EVO 840 500 GB. and put the 500 GB WD Blue (original HDD)in storage.
A couple words of advice, especially another reviewer almost threw his through the window; Don't mess with any of the BIOS settings. Otherwise processor runs 70+*c constantly. Really the only setting perhaps is upping the RPM on the system fan....even at max can't hear it. Once I accepted the stock setting the temps dropped, and the 70-75% processor time.
This is unit replaces an HP laptop from 2007 with a broken internal screen, using the HDMI OUT as a HTPC, ran VER
Y hot, AMD Turion x64 ran 76-85* and sat precariously on top a center channel speaker.
So I can recommend this VIVO box as a HTPC. I also like the Vivo 42, which can have two SSD, unfortunately this one only has one SATA in.

5 out of 5 eggsNice "Scale"

Pros: Cheap
Hard to pass up this deal.

Cons: Looks like a digital weigh scale. lol

Wish it wasn't a Celeron :( but again for the cost, what do u expect.

Other Thoughts: Resize partitions down, image to a cheap 120gb ssd, pop in 4/8gb of ram and yeah... its a quick little box. boots in 3 seconds. love it.
total right at $300. That's a bargin!

5 out of 5 eggsKeep Windows 8 initial setup away from me!

Pros: Very inexpensive box to have 64 bit Windows 8.1 already installed.
Works quite well.

Cons: You might decide to hurl the box through a window before you get through all the initial Windows 8.1 setup screens.

Other Thoughts: I got this as a dedicated system to run some software that only functions on Windows, so Windows was a must, but it took years off my life to get through the initial setup screens on first boot. I have to have a Microsoft account? I have to setup cloud storage? I have to give blood samples and take marketing surveys? I just wanted to turn it on and load my software :-). Fortunately, once I made it past all the initial gibberish, I was able to google for how to get rid of the metro interface, turn on auto login, and add startup programs, so from now on it should boot directly into the one program I need it for and I'll never notice Windows 8.1 again.

5 out of 5 eggsNice inexpensive computer!

Pros: For the money, this little jewel is tough to beat, I was looking to build a low cost machine but opted for this when I started adding the cost of H/W and OS. It performs beautifully for most tasks and as long as it's understood this is NOT a gaming machine, you will likely be happy with it too. Boots up faster than expected and is a real nice machine for cruising the internet and streaming Pandora.

Cons: None at this price point!
