4 out of 5 eggsUbuntu issues

Pros: I love that you can pop out the hard drive. Using an existing 500 gig HD I put Ubuntu on it and installed Windows 8 on the HD that came with it. Now instead of maintaining dual boot, I just pop in the OS I need.

Ubuntu is my primary use for this PC. I do some video editing using KdenLive and organize pics, upload videos to various services, surf the web a bit, it is not my primary but it's the PC in the main living space. I use it when cooking or brewing.

I have issues with Ubuntu, I've had many kernel painics, the wifi driver did not come with the latest Ubuntu , I had to find the Github project, compile and use modprobe to install it. I also use a hardwired ethernet connection. Frequently when the machine wakes up from sleep with no network connection and nothing will fix it but a reboot.

Nevertheless, I still like it. USB 3 for my external drives, SD card support, many USB ports, I'm going to use it for a Windows Media Center for recording TV with my antenna. I'm disappointed with the wifi driver issue, but if you have a usb wifi stick, then use it and you can have Ubuntu too.

Cons: Incomplete Ubuntu wifi support. Available Wifi driver seems Beta. Kernel Panics from time to time. Even ethernet does not work when waking from sleep half the time. I think it's all related to the wifi driver. RTL8821AE

5 out of 5 eggsA great box for web

Pros: Compact, fast, quiet, and nice looking

Cons: Windows 8 yet tolerable

Other Thoughts: A great box that I use to watch video or movie via internet. Never used it as a daily primary PC. After almost half year of usage, no problem ever. Windows 8 is a little bit annoy but its not the box's fault.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Box

Pros: Love this little box. Picked it up when it was on sale and it came with windows. Very easy to upgrade the memory and hard drive. There is plenty of IO for backup drives and external items.

Cons: Have not found one yet.

Other Thoughts: I hope they come out with one in the future that will allow multiple SSD drives in it or even a bunch of m.sata drives.
Putting in some USB3 ports inside next to the sata port would be nice too.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your money on this dung

Pros: looks nice, easy hook up

Cons: You can't put in a mobile device processor and expect it to run windows 8, I have a $50 RCA 7 inch tablet that is faster than this thing. I thought they put a real processor in. The only way I could put in the updates(3 days and nothing on its own), I had to download them 2 or 3 at a time manually(unless it is a big one then 1 at a time). Sometimes it reads my TV HDMI and sometimes it doesn't , have to restart and cross my fingers. I don't ask much from it, just play some movies on a usb. And be there to check a few things on line when?if main computers go down. If it is having problems doing simple tasks now, 6 months from now it will be worst. OH BY THE WAY, you have to pay shipping back to Newegg for refund for a defective product(less than 30 days) that should never have been made, also so far windows update has had 80+ of them. I am using this thing to post this review, so it does work to a point. I have not tried to stream with it, and don't have a week to wait for it to try.

1 out of 5 eggsThink twice...no think 3 times before buying

Pros: Absolutely nothing

Cons: Asus Service. Asus service. Asus service. This is my 3rd follow up review of this item, and can honestly say this is the worst piece of you know what I have ever purchased. That in itself would not be so bad....if service were decent...however this unit has been sent and returned twice to me now from the Asus service "professionals". Returned completely nonfunctional that is. Same consistent problem, unit will not power on. After pleading with Asus for resolution, their response is to send it across the country yet again for repair. A third time. Amazing. I have had this item since August and it only worked for a few weeks the entire time I have owned it. Asus could learn a few things from other major manufactures and customer service. If you are considering buying this and you get a unit that is trouble free, congrats! But if your experience turns out like mine...you were warned. I will follow up in a month or so, when I get it back from service the third time, but my view on this now is a total loss, and Asus couldn't care less.

Other Thoughts: You've been warned.

5 out of 5 eggsthe sound and movie capabilities

Pros: ok pros: number 1 it's fully capable of puting out 5.1 surround sound through the fiber optic output port

2 it's fully capable of 1080p resolution

3 you can upgrade the ram to 16 gig

4 I've upgraded to 16 gigs and I've a DVD writer that it runs very smooth. and i've a bluray writer hooked to it and it plays blurays and writes blurays flawlessly

Cons: most disk drives you connect to it have to have their firmware updated
and I'm not sure if I actualy had to do this but I upgraded the windows os to pro it only comes with win8.1 with bing which microsoft customer support told me that that os can't play DVDs or BLURAYS and that I needed to have pro so that I can get the media package that comes only with pro is what they said but I'm not sure that's what I needed to do or not I upgraded to pro and the DVD writer still did not work but when I updated the firmware it worked fine

Other Thoughts: I love this little machine it has enough power to do pretty much everything I was able to do with my quadcore gaming rig that I built then replaced with this pc because the gaming rig was really heating up my room and I couldn't afford to set up water cooling for it

it is my opinion that this pc was a great replacement

5 out of 5 eggsEpicness in a tiny box

Pros: Super Quiet, Small, quite the bargain, perfect for a media computer.

Cons: um...it doesn't come in hot pink?

Other Thoughts: Bought this for our family room TV to stream music and movies. It's exactly what we needed.

we purchased a wireless keyboard and mouse to replace the corded versions (system comes bluetooth ready)

Asus filled this much needed "entertainment center" niche very well. I highly recommend it

4 out of 5 eggsChromebox alternative

Pros: This Asus machine is comparable to a chromebox. For around the same price, you get more RAM and disk space. Plus you have a lot more flexibility with Windows.

Cons: The webstorage and "bonuses" pushed by Asus is all a bunch of worthless nonsense. Total waste of time and an insult to the customer.

Other Thoughts: If you are considering buying any computer these days, make sure it has an HDMI port and at least one USB 3.0.

No, this won't work with your latest "game". Go ahead and blow a couple thousand bucks to play your "game".

2 out of 5 eggsNot the worst - depending on the application

Pros: Small, relatively quiet. Serves it's function.

Cons: The wifi on this computer was toasted. I plugged a USB NIC in and disabled the on-board one to correct the issue.

Obvious flaw: Windows 8 - I can't say how lousy this OS is.

Slow, I don't have much hope for keeping this computer around.

Other Thoughts: I am using this machine as a media center. For that it's fine. Windows 8 is horrible, but that's not 100% the Asus's fault. I'm seriously considering putting linux on it, but am a little worried that the drivers might not exist.

As a media center, this thing works. I could have used a Raspberri Pi and received the same results though...

Anyhow, let's just say it does what it needs to. If you are going to buy this as your primary PC, please don't - you will be disappointed.
