5 out of 5 eggsGreat little PC for simple network tasks.

Pros: VERY compact. Built-in WiFi. Runs Windows 7 and 8.1. Intel Celeron - not an Atom. Very nice keyboard and mouse. Decent desktop for light office use.

OS is a HOME edition. You will need to reload with PRO if you want to put in a domain.

Cons: Slow. Do not expect to play games or handle complex spreadsheets. Max resolution 1280 x1024.

Other Thoughts: Bought these to connect to TVs on our shop floor for automated information displays. They are not fast, but run reliably. Built-in WiFi saves on having to run cable.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS EeeBox

Pros: Small, Windows 8.1 with bing works great, silent, worked out of the box.

Cons: Unit failed just under one year of usage. Came home to find my unit powered on but no video signal. Performed all necessary troubleshooting and could not get video out of either the HDMI nor VGA ports.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Michael,
Thank you for the positive review. I'm sorry to hear that the unit failed to work under one year of usage. If there's no video, please verify if the video cable connected from the monitor to the unit is securely connected and working properly. Also, check the monitor if it didn't go bad. If these were all checked and working properly, you may need to send it in for service. Should you need further assistance sending it in for service, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150548803 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsDitch Windows 8 & you will love it!

Pros: Sleek slim form factor, quiet, nice keyboard, USB 3.0. Solid performer for internet browsing, media viewing, and other light computing needs* (and that's a big asterisk, see cons!)

Cons: Comes with too little RAM in my opinion, even for a computer meant for very light use. I was EXTREMELY unhappy with this computer initially. Right out of the box it was painfully slow with things as simple as navigating through the OS. I tried cleaning as much of the "apps" to get to a bare bones OS, but saw little improvement. Win 8 got stuck doing updates on start up several times. I replaced the ram with a single 4GB stick and a good quality SSD and saw very little improvement. Installing Windows 7 (ultimate 64) completely changed everything. I absolutely LOVE this computer now. It can't compete with my other rigs for more serious computing tasks, but for what I need it for it is awesome. The system boots in seconds, web pages load instantly, and it plays 1080p video with no problems, all while sipping 35 watts or less, silently.

Other Thoughts: My initial attempts at installing windows 7 failed horribly. Ended up having to send it to ASUS to have windows 8 reinstalled. Gave it another go successfully this time around. As another reviewer pointed out, install from a USB 2.0 port as the 3.0 port will not work until you install the drivers from within the OS. You also may need to mess with the BIOS boot settings to get it to boot from a USB. I believe this was the problem with my first install attempt. The second time around I attempted to disable all secure boot options from the BIOS and kept getting blue screens. Reset the BIOS to defaults and viola, installation went through with no problems. I suspect the BIOS version was changed when it went back to ASUS. If you do plan on installing another OS, I would highly recommend you attempt it on a different HD than the one it came with. That way if you screw up you can slap the old one with Win 8 in and have only a semi-useless paperweight rather than a full one.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm glad that you like the sleek slim form-factor, quiet and solid performance of the EeBox. I certainly understand your dissatisfaction with WINDOWS 8.1. If is actually a good OS and installing all recommended WINDOWS Update should improve system performance and stability. Should you need further assistance with the unit, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150422110 on the subject line.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Kodi Media System

Pros: Does what I bought it for. Works great as a media center and browsing the web. I have it hooked up to a 50 inch TV in the family room and runs quite and plenty fast for a media center. Got it for a great price and a rebate to boot.

Cons: 2 GB RAM

Other Thoughts: Unlike some I had no issues at all with this system, bought another 2 GB RAM (Kingston 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600(PC3L 12800) Laptop Memory Model KVR16LS11S6/2) and it runs a lot better.

1 out of 5 eggsMisses the mark

Pros: small form factor, quiet despite having a fan, number of USB ports, built-in wifi,media card reader, case easily opened and HDD and memory are easily accessible for replacement/upgrade

Cons: Windows 8 Bing, 2GB of installed memory which is really inadequate for Windows 8,especially for a multi-core processor. Any sort of Windows update really brings this machine to its knees. Replacing and upgrading memory has not worked for me. I've tried two different brands of 4GB memory (DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V) without success. Second memory vendor even sold memory that was 100% compatible with this model. This machine has two slots, but possibly one of them is disabled/unused. I've tried combing the 2GB and 4GB upgrade, and tried replacing the 2GB with the 4GB stick all with the same result (BIOS fails to even start - no beeps, nothing).

Other Thoughts: Installing Linux on this box, or potentially downgrading to Win 7 may result in better performance. ASUS could provide better guidance in their documentation on which memory configurations are supported (only 1 slot, both slots, mixed sizes ok, recommended/verified brands of memory, etc.) because a modern Windows machine should have a minimum of 4GB...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Boz,
Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you are experiencing slow system performance with the unit running with only 2GB of RAM. The system should run popular applications with 2GB of RAM without compromising system performance. Off course adding more RAM will provide extra performance boost to the unit. If you are having difficulty upgrading the RAM, please make sure that you are using non-ECC, unbuffered DDR3L at 1333MHz and please verify if the unit is running with the most current BIOS version. If you need further technical assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150354773 on the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality, keep looking

Pros: There is text here only because the NewEgg form wouldn't let me submit the review without it.

There are no pro's to this unless you work at FedEx and want to give them some business through product repairs.

Cons: The unit shipped from Asus as defective (BIOS battery wouldn't hold a charge). After a **very** lengthy time trying to diagnose by their techs I missed my window to return.

The RMA took longer than they claimed (2 weeks vs. their claim of 1) and when it returned it was very well packed but no longer booted up.

Apparently this is little consumer repair steps which can be done so any problems have to be addressed by them at their factory. If you purchase this please consider time not being able to use the device and the additional cost spent at FedEx to ship it back to Asus.

4 out of 5 eggsHTPC - Solid Performance once I added RAM

Pros: * Quad Core processor
* Upgradable to 8GB ram
* HDMI output
* Small form factor
* Virtually Silent
* Wireless N
* Gigabit NIC
* Excellent ASUS hardware design
* Serial port for legacy

Cons: * Ships with 2GB RAM (60% used out of the box)
* SATA II only. Most platter hard drives can't go any faster than that anyway.

Other Thoughts: ** Upgrade to at least 4 GB RAM or your ram will bottleneck your performance
* Wireless N works well with streaming video such as Netflix or Hulu. It falls short when trying to stream HD from a local computer or file server. Use Ethernet for that.
* Windows 8.1 with Bing is essentially Windows 8.1. The reason why this computer is so inexpensive is MS doesn't charge manufacturers for the license.
*Be sure to run "Belarc" on your computer and record the results. It is a free computer audit program. It will save the windows key in case you need to reformat the computer at some point. New Win 8 computers do not ship with a key sticker.
* Once the cover is removed the RAM, HDD, and MINI PCI-E slot are easily accessible. This computer is made from a single PCB.

5 out of 5 eggsKiller Price / Size / Performance Ratio

Pros: I've installed a few of these at clients that are in need of a solid performing base machine without a need for medium to high grade graphics. This is a true quad core atom CPU that operates at 1.9 GHz, this CPU really shines with a SSD, and I have to say that it does scream. The base machine comes with 2GB of ram, but it is upgradable to 8GB per chipset limitations.

This machine also comes with a VESA mount, which is a very, very awesome idea. This gives you the ability to bolt this thing to the back of a monitor... it's really slick.

Cons: Some may be dis-swayed by the lack of optical drive. This should not be too concerning; considering the ability to Velcro an external one to the side of the and plugging it into a rear USB port (assuming you are using the VESA mount, or using the stand).

Other Thoughts: This is a 64-Bit ONLY processor. There is no 32-bit / x86 support for this CPU; this is very important if you are wanting to install Windows 7 (make sure it's x64), have 32-bit only programs, or have any other 32-bit compatibility concerns.

I have successfully put Windows 7 on a handful of these. Do NOT let the poor reviewer keep you from purchasing this. Within the BIOS of this machine and ANY---ANY----ANY----I REPEAT: ANY UEFI based machine, you have to turn off Boot Security and also tell it to boot non-UEFI devices. Windows 8 and certain Linux builds are UEFI based operating systems that provide a layer of boot security. Not turning off these checks and boot methods can cause lockups during install, or a chance of the BIOS to completely ignoring the installation media. It's also important to NOT install Windows 7 through the USB 3.0 port. The Windows 7 installation software will lockup because it doesn't have the proper base USB 3 drivers to work with. Windows 8/8.1, however, does have these drivers, hence it will install and make it seem like Windows 7 won't install on the machine.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 install - no go

Pros: Small Form factor.
Virtually silent.

Cons: Windows 8.1 bing.
Slow performance
Windows 7 install locks up.

Other Thoughts: I filled out the Asus support request 3 days ago requesting assistance with Windows 7 installation. i.e. What (if any) BIOS settings need to be changed from factory default. The Windows 7 installer gets to the Language selection screen, then locks up. I have not heard back from them yet - 3 days! I used to think Asus support was good. I'm not sure anymore.

If you like Windows 8.1 Bing and can tolerate substantial lag between mouse clicks and OS reaction, then this is the box for you.
