1 out of 5 eggsExtremely disappointed

Pros: Zero, it would not even turn on.

Cons: Everything since I got to see nothing of how it is supposed to work because it is majorly messed up. I thought it was a faulty power supply so I put in a new one and still get an error message. :(

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed after doing a lot of research I picked this computer due to the extras on it. Now it doesn't work at all and they expect me to pay a TON of shipping to return a product that is faulty. If I get a new one they don't pay to ship that but I am still out the extra money to return it and the time without a working desktop. Very frustrating and horrible return policy.

4 out of 5 eggsRefurbished: HP Pavilion HPE h8-1234 Desktop PC

Pros: Lots of processor(s).
Lots of RAM
Plenty of HD space.
WLAN, Bluetooth, USB3.0, optical Toslink SPDIF
No onboard graphics
Lots of USB headers on the motherboard.
Six SATA ports.
HP Customer Support

Cons: Typical OEM case with few drive bays and not enough spots for fans.
Bad power supply compatibility.
Low-Power video card.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellet computer if you plan on leaving it alone or possibly adding RAM. If you add a hard drive, I think it will heat up too much. With the orientation of the hard drives and only one fan, not counting the power supply, the heat will just build up.
So I tried to move the hardware into a different case. That is when I found out about the power supply incompatibility. I was not sure what the problem was at the time, so I contacted HP Customer Support. I had a few hoops to jump through, but after that, they sent me a box and a shipping label. I am very impressed. They replaced the motherboard and sent it back to me. It worked great until I moved it to another case again. I currently have the same problem.

The power supplies I have tried are a 650-Watt Antec True Power Trio and an 500-Watt Ultra X-Finity.

If anyone has a solution or a list of working power supplies, please let me know.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value, Great Size, Poor Upgradability

Pros: - Price
- Love the small form factor. I wanted a computer, not furniture.
- LOTS of features crammed into a micro ATX board (AM3+ socket, PCIe 2.0 x16, up to 32GB DDR-1600, inboard USB 3.0 support)
- 6-cylinder processor
- Built-in Wifi and Bluetooth (I get good reception)
- I really like the placement of the 2 x USB 3.0 and audio jacks on the top of the case. Also, the external 3.5" bay and additional front USB jacks are hidden behind an attractive sliding cover.

Cons: - Bloatware and tons of it. Took me a while to clean it all up.
- No HP warranty (refurb)
- Weak video card for tough jobs (Minecraft is mostly fine. Half Life 2 gets ~30 FPS on decent settings. Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Far Cry 3 are unplayable.)
- Crowded interior
- Limited upgradability (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I bought this computer on a whim to have a cheap home workstation. Given all the features crammed into this little box, I think it's a great value as long as you aren't concerned by the lack of warranty. It's marketed as a refurb, but it seems all new to me. For home office or student use, this thing is pretty powerful for its size and price.

The only problem I have with this machine is that the video card is anemic, and the case and motherboard make upgrading very difficult. I found this out after getting re-hooked on a few old games and thirsting for some of the new ones. This rig runs on a 300W power supply that can't handle a nice video card. This wouldn't be problem in most rigs, as the PSU is an easy upgrade, but HP's proprietary non-ATX motherboard won't POST with many aftermarket PSUs. It seems that some people were able to make it work with units that were around 450W or so, but I don't have the resources or patience to duplicate that. Also, switching out the mobo is not a satisfying option because you won't find another micro-ATX board that supports all the features of the original. I guess that playing recent games is just too much to ask of this little guy, despite the other nice components. Maybe I'm just greedy. You could still upgrade the GPU to something better than the included Radeon HD 7450, but high-end cards are out of the question. Cooling would be an issue anyway. Maybe others can comment or find workarounds.

All in all, I'm very happy with this machine. Would definitely buy again for home office/student use. Look elsewhere for an entry-level gaming rig. Maybe I'll get one for my parents.

5 out of 5 eggsHPE h8-1234

Pros: Nice looking case. Plenty of usb slots. Amd FX 6120 is great. Using overdrive I was able to get it to 4.1 ghz. The Disk is reasonably fast and plenty of space. Graphics card is okay but I will probably upgrade it at some point.

Cons: Would have been nice to have a better power supply. 300 watts is not a lot. I will have to upgrade the powersuppy when I upgrade the graphics card.

Other Thoughts: I removed the 2 gig memory module and replaced it with 2 x 4 gig memory. For a total of 16 gig of ram. Not that I needed it just planning for the future. Plus the memory was cheap. ;-)
