2 out of 5 eggsDied just after 30-day return policy date

Pros: It's a nice little box which worked well for my needs (an Untangle device).

Cons: Only lasted a few weeks before it died. Now I have to go through the hassle of trying to replace it. That isn't work the savings to me.

Other Thoughts: Because of the short life of the product I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsGood value

Pros: Inexpensive, compact, quiet

Cons: More memory would be nice, but for what you're paying I can't complain TOO much

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to use as a DVR for some IP security cameras I installed. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy-duty gaming or anything like that but for streaming media or other light-duty tasks where you want something small and quiet it's a great value. It doesn't come with an optical drive, but you can add one of those slim ones if you need to.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little machine

Pros: Inexpensive
Low power motherboard/CPU combo
Nice Gigabyte motherboard with 2 GigE Internet ports
No Microsoft Tax
Fairly quiet

Cons: Flimsy front panel.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to make a little server out of and I wanted to have two network ports so I could make it potentially be a gateway or bridge. The Gigabyte Board that is in this is what I would have used if I was building my own anyway so it made the choice easy. Despite my intention to use it as a server I have booted into the desktop and the Celeron chip is snappy - significantly quicker than an atom. It also has a nice array of ports.

As far as power goes, I plugged the box into my Kill-A-Watt and found that it draws 36 Watts at idle and peaks to a bit over 43 Watts. The power supply is a bit of an unknown here.

One thing that is not shown in the pictures is that it does have a door flap on the front that opens to reveal two USB ports, a headphone and microphone jack as well as a reset button. The door is quite flimsy and I don't think it would hold up to regular use. However the system was so inexpensive I'm not going to drop an egg for it.

With regard to the root password, when you set up the default user in Linux you do have sudo privileges so to change the root password just do:
sudo passwd
It will then ask you for your password which you configured. Then you will enter the new password for root, twice.

The BIOS has the UEFI stuff but it has support for legacy mode so installing some other variant of Linux shouldn't be a problem.

Mine was a little loud when I got it and when I opened it up the wire for the cpu fan was rubbing up against the fan on the top of the case. Once I moved the cpu fan wire to stop this I found the machine fairly quiet. My "void the warranty" sticker was not actually placed in a way that it would rip if I opened the case so I guess I'm still okay.

Finally the mysterious AMD sticker in the pictures actually does show up on the delivered product. There's nothing AMD about it of course. It's an Intel chip.

2 out of 5 eggsPower supply died after 5 weeks

Pros: Small form factor, quiet, Ubuntu worked great.

Cons: Survived intact for less time than most Wintel PCs.

Other Thoughts: It was great until the loud bang a few minutes ago.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice linux box

Pros: Based on Gigabyte C1007U motherboard for sale elsewhere on Newegg (only documentation is MB manual and driver CD).
WD 3.5" 500GB 7200rpm 16G cache HD, single 4Gb Ballistix DDR3 (I suppose the hardware may vary so YMMV). Mine had Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit - I prefer this to 12.10. Fairly recent release (12.04.02?) - needed <100Mb of updates. Boots fast. Password for root is root (you will need this to get updates or install other software).

Cons: Has a sticker sealing the case that says breaking it voids the warranty - I'm going to wait a while before adding another 4Gb stick of RAM.
The MB has more USB2.0 ports but there's no place to hook them up on the case - you only get the back panel.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat things come in small packages

Pros: This small beast is nothing to shirk at. I love seeing Linux bundled with it with full knowledge that I am not paying anything extra for Windows.

I bought this computer for my father to replace his very old ubuntu box. and it will suit him for a home PC perfectly.

Cons: Nowhere in the packaging is the default password for the Administrator account, nor is there anywhere on the website for support in this matter.

But I knew that I would be on my own either way, so only a minor con.

Other Thoughts: I actually don't mind that I will have to put my own Linux flavor on this little guy, it will allow full customization for the intended end user.
