5 out of 5 eggsEasy to use, got it for work, is becoming media stick

Pros: Pros:
-Easy to set up. Plugged it in, plugged in usb keyboard. Went through set up. Crashed once when downloading and installing ubuntu updates, restarted it and it finished installing just fine.
-I got it for a work related project (digital signage) but now my kids are using it to stream netflix, after installing chrome, (default is chromium)
-Family using it to surf internet
-Fits unobtrusively behind TV.

Cons: -I was expecting to just putty into it for remote admin so I didn't buy bluetooth keyboard/mouse. Since the device has morphed into a media device the family has used it. So the universal access option mouse keys helped.
-I wish it had more memory. After updating Ubuntu there wasn't much space left, like 300 MB.
-I am getting an SD Card to put into it for more storage
-Not a powerhouse but super cheap for full pc. Does everything I need.
-Not as small as I thought. Full 4" in length.

Other Thoughts: I got the ubnutu one because for what I intended it for I don't need all the bloat of windows. Since my family likes it I may be getting one for some other extended family to use as a media box. I am thinking of getting them the windows one since it would be more familiar.

Would rate it 4 for the lack of storage, but I'm rating it 5 because its cheap price and SD Cards are affordable.

4 out of 5 eggsThis thing is great, if you have the right expectations.

Pros: This thing is awesome for the price, totally forgot that they made this thing and had to pick one up when I saw it here. I removed a lot of the ubuntu desktop bloat and replaced the unity dashboard with lxde. Runs Kodi great, remote desktop works fine, plenty of specs a basic ubuntu device. Streams 1080p movies from my home server just fine. No lag or hiccups.

Cons: The 8gb is pretty small for internal storage even when using ubuntu and stripping out a lot of unneeded packages also would have been nice to get 2gb of ram as well. Oh well, the microsd card slot works great! Also not a fan of the Unity desktop (is anybody?) but thats easy enough to fix for even the linux novice. Would have been nice to have a legacy boot option, EFI only makes getting some older linux distros difficult to boot.

Other Thoughts: Not sure why this thing gets a lot of hate. Yeah I wouldn't want to use this as my main PC and Windows probably chugs a bit on it. But this thing is great if you want a little linux media PC, server, etc. Sure the extra USB port would have been nice but not a big deal once its up an running as I won't have anything at all plugged in. Definitely plan on getting one of the newer ones soon as well!

1 out of 5 eggs(Mostly) Useless

Pros: It's cute. I have been able to successfully play media on it (but that's about it).

Cons: Most of the many hours I have spent with my Linux version of the Compute Stick have been waiting for it to respond, or reboot. It can barely perform one function at a time. Even basic word processing is a laborious wait for something to respond. Hanging ... hanging ... with the stick. The onboard memory is so lacking that there isn't enough room for its own security updates. Junk.

Other Thoughts: I am determined to find a use for this thing. Great idea, awful execution.

1 out of 5 eggsCompute Stick ubuntu version

Pros: Small
Simple
ubuntu
good for travel

Cons: I've used the MS Windows version of the Compute Stick for several months - all in all, for what it was made for, I give that version a thumbs up. In the ubuntu version, for some strange erroneous reason, Intel stripped down the RAM and Memory [for the ubuntu model]. I suppose MS influence caused Intel to try to keep the linux version from running circles around the ubuntu version. Well, it worked. They have successfully choked it down to the edge of functionality. Instead of putting as much RAM and diskspace (and processor) as possible, Intel has failed with a cheap version that doesn't have enough bang to work well enough. I tested with two browsers, chrome (& chromium) and firefox, firefox worked noticeably better. I have ubuntu computers both desktop and notebook and used them for years with a high level of satisfaction. I even have a ubuntu phone, so I'm no stranger to ubuntu.

Other Thoughts: If you have a specific single, simple function that you want this ubuntu version computer to do, then I think it will probably work for you. If you want to replace your ubuntu travel notebook with this and do all you now do on the road, then I say no. Wait for Intel to stop being stupid by cutting the power of the device, and install at least as much RAM and diskspace as the MS Windows version has. My vote is negative on this unit. This form factor is awesome, now where is the version with enough power to do all the basic functions I need to do? I'm not asking for a gaming notebook replacement, just a functional notebook replacement for simple travel.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome monitoring system

Pros: We use these as monitoring systems in my office. We have them auto login, launch chrome in kiosk mode and it loads a webpage with all of our information that we need to pay attention to. It works great and was easy to setup.

Cons: Not much hard drive space but was fixed with MicroSD card

2 out of 5 eggs1GB RAM makes it all but useless

Pros: Great concept, easy set up

Cons: Even using a web browser with only a single tab open is barely functional and extremely slow, as it easily takes up the small amount of RAM immediately. Not ready for real use.

Other Thoughts: When i pre-ordered this, it was actually incorrectly listed as having the same specs as the Windows 8.1 model, which has 2GB RAM and 32 GB storage. After the correction was made, i figured i might as well keep the pre-order and see how it goes. Regret.

I will eventually try installing lubuntu (instead of Unity) which will probably make it borderline usable. However in terms of the actual original product, Intel essentially shipped trash
