JBL Loft 50 Three-Way Floorstanding Loudspeaker (Pair)

Elegant tower speakers with three 4" (100mm) midrange drivers and dual 6-1/2" (165mm) woofers. For those with a discerning eye for contemporary style and an ear for detailed sound, the JBL® Loft Series is the perfect speaker set.

The series' Loft50 is a pair of tower speakers that we've designed to reproduce your audio with incredible highs and lows. Their dual 6-1/2-inch (165-millimeter), side-firing PolyBass woofers allow each speaker to produce thunderous, floor-rattling bass; the midrange frequencies, where departures from faithful reproduction are most noticeable, come from three 4-inch (100-millimeter) PolyBass drivers; the highs come through crisp and clear at frequencies up to 30kHz with a 1-inch (25-millimeter) soft-dome tweeter that we've placed at ear level. We've equipped the tweeter with our proprietary Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal™ (EOS) waveguide technology, which creates a wide, consistent listening window, making every seat the best in the house.

Finally, the Loft50 speakers use a Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) design to help ensure that a strong, precise signal arrives at each driver with little alteration from the original source. Not only do the speakers sound stunningly good, but their unique design meets the needs of anyone looking for space-saving audio components. These speakers are unlike any you may have experienced.

Features

For those who possess a contemporary taste in décor and an affinity for performance speakers, the JBL Loft series is the perfect hybrid solution. Smashing the myth that good sound can only come from bulky cabinets, the slim yet powerful speakers are technological marvels that develop full, rich sound from their ultra lean cabinets.

  • The tweeter features a 1" soft dome with high sensitivity and fast transient response for accurate high-frequency reproduction
  • The tweeter integrates with an Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal waveguide, giving it smooth integration with the midrange and a wide, consistent listening window to create an incredibly wide stereo image across a huge listening area
  • Polybass drivers feature paper cones that are reinforced with a proprietary copolymer to provide additional stiffness and damping to the cone surface; you get tighter bass and extended low frequencies without breakup and distortion
  • A Freeflow Port Architecture extends low frequency response by coupling internal air motion to a computer-designed aperture with a flared shape, allowing maximum air flow without audible port noise; the result is room filling bass from an attractive, slim speaker
  • The Straight Line Signal Path is a crossover design that provides the shortest route from the input terminals to the transducers, thus minimizing signal loss and noise; it helps to ensure that a strong, precise, and unaltered signal arrives at each driver

10 - 250 Watts Suggested Amplifier Range
JBL engineers designed the Loft50 tower speakers to produce precise, exceptional sound from a receiver or amplifier capable of delivering up to 250 watts.

Dual 6-1/2" (165mm) and Triple 4" (100mm) PolyBass Drivers
Paper produces the most natural sound of all driver materials. We've reinforced the Loft50's paper woofer cones with a proprietary polymer that provides additional stiffness and damping to the cone surface. These qualities provide the listener with tight bass and extended low frequencies without breakup or distortion.

1-inch (25mm) Soft Dome Tweeter with EOS Waveguide
The Loft50's tweeter features a 1-inch (25-millimeter) soft dome with high sensitivity and fast transient response for accurate high-frequency reproduction. The tweeter integrates with an EOS (Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal) waveguide, giving high-frequency sounds a wide, consistent listening window. The result is an incredibly broad stereo image across a huge listening area.

FreeFlow Port Technology
A rear-firing FreeFlow™ port is acoustically matched to the Loft50's woofer to move air out of the speaker's cabinet. You'll get extended bass response with low distortion, adding power to your music and excitement to your movie soundtracks.

Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) Design
The ideal path from input to components to transducers is a straight line. The Loft50 takes that path. Its Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) technology preserves the clarity, detail and dynamics of your favorite audio content.

Accurate Frequency Response
The Loft50 doesn't over-emphasize or under-emphasize any sounds. With a frequency response of 37Hz - 20kHz, it reproduces a true, full sound range from deep bass tones to ultrahigh frequencies.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Darn Good Sounding Speakers for the $

Pros: These JBL's sound pretty decent for one hundred and fifty bucks (assuming the rebate comes through). I am using them by themselves without any center channel, sub's or rears. They are not as efficient as many other, more expensive speakers, but I can highly recommend them.

Cons: My wife wishes they were another color and may paint them (except the grills). She also thinks they are intimidating size-wise.

Other Thoughts: They came in two days- pretty quick for three bucks shipping. They are not a bad sized speaker. So far I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsJBL JBL JBL JBL

Pros: Sound great, Compact, Great price now only $149 after rebate. More than 30% less than on ama...

Cons: Not wireless. Not very pretty; really need to be cherry wood.

Other Thoughts: With Loft 40 rears ($60) and a Paradigm PDR 10 subwoofer ($145 used) I have a wonderful system for a great price. I love Newegg. Got a Denon AVR-75 for $79 used and complete system was only $433.

5 out of 5 eggsJust wow

Pros: Clarity, depth and fullness of sound, sound output, size, weight. Ease of hookup.

Cons: Not bi-amped. Had to use multi-purpose cement on the tiny rubber feet. Lack of carpet spikes. Jbl's poor packaging leaves little to protect the speakers during transit. I live in an apartment (my neighbors love me /sarcasm).

Other Thoughts: I can only do an apples to oranges review, since my last tower speakers were 8" MTX monitors over ten years ago, since then, I have had bookshelf speakers consisting of pre-klipsch Energy 6-1/2 inchers, then a set of 5-1/2 inch older Infinitys, and most recently what these bad boys are replacing, Polk T15. I wanted to stick with Energy/Jamo towers or Polk towers and did tons of research, but every single time I would open my wallet, the numerous sites I was looking at jumped the prices by as much as 50%, what on earth is going on in the speaker economy for pete's sake. Anyway, I was fed up with the paycheck waiting game and searched more, I saw these as a pair (which is rare for towers) for a dirt cheap price, but I have stayed away from JBL since my last bookshelf set of JBL's that I owned 20 years ago blew with barely any power going to them, and the receiver was not clipping either.

Anyway, these suckers blow everything I have ever owned away, including some classic Magnepans and those aforementioned pre-klipsch Energys, those bookshelves were the best thing I ever heard and set me back way more than what these JBL's cost me.

After hookup, I attempted to break the JBL's in. I didn't need to, they are AMAZING, I hear every resonance, every pitch, every carrying reverb, with the wave-guide tweeters, the sound-stage is always perfect, and every note seems to this non-audiophile to be perfectly reproduced.

I plan on finishing up my JBL system with Loft 30's for the rear and a Loft 20 for a center, maybe keeping my Yamaha sub or grabbing an Energy sub.

These are hooked up to a TX-SR444 Onkyo.

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: for the size and prize at $150 it's a good buy, I have a pair of older JBL's that don't require as much power to work at it's optimum, with these new ones I have to turn the volume up higher, the sound is great though, highs, med's and lows, right a way I noticed the difference, and something else that most people don't realize, speakers are like leather shoes or boots, or even a car engines, you have to break them in, and you can't do that within a week unless you are audiophile.

Cons: minor Con: that they require at least 50 or 60 watts of output so they can work at it's optimum, while the older ones I have only require 10 to 20 watts, but that's no problem I can work around it because my receiver's max RMS is 110 Watts.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat speakers for $150

Pros: Great highs
Good mid
Surprising amount of base
Perfect height
Well packaged

Cons: Heavy? If that can be considered a con.

Other Thoughts: Got the speakers during sale for about $150. Initially, they are intended to be placed along side of my playroom TV to replace a busted soundbar system. But after I connected them to my SMSL Q5 DAC/Amp, I found them to be perfect computer speakers. My current Yamaha TSS-1 with Creative Lab SB1905 DAC is not bad for its age. But this 2.0 set up beats it with fuller and more natural sound. I know, it is odd having two towers flanking my desk. But the height of the tweeter and mid's are perfect. And with no need for subwoofer on the floor, they help a bit with the clutter in the room.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good towers wen on sale.

Pros: Good sound quality from multiple drivers. Tall enough that the tweeter is close to ear level when seated. Good deal when on sale.

Cons: Slender design makes them look a little odd. Woofers on the sides of the cabinet can be a sound issue if you are placing them in tight areas.

Other Thoughts: First off, these aren't high quality speakers that will blow you away. The Loft line is a budget line of speakers which are over-priced at their retail price tag. There's no way I would pay over $400 for a pair of Loft 50's. I rated these 5 stars/eggs based on the sale purchase price of $169. The speakers sound good enough for most people and if your receiver has EQ ability, then can sound even better. Don't pay over $200 for these, as the Infinity Primus P163 towers go on sale for $99 each and those are a step above these Loft 50's.

2 out of 5 eggsNot real happy

Pros: They look nice and don't take up a lot of room...

Cons: I got these to replace my old JBL G400s that I've had for ~12 years. The sound was really disappointing - some might call them "bright" sounding - they just sound "tinny" and cheap to me. Returning for a refund, *and* getting stuck with a "restocking" fee....given that I bought these based on other Newegg customer reviews, I think it kinda stinks, but....oh well....

5 out of 5 eggsVery Pleased.

Pros: Very clear with a respectable range of highs to lows.

Cons: Obvious packaging. Seriously the shipping box is not even remotely discrete there's a line drawing of the speaker on the outside of the box. Which is fine if you live in a nice neighborhood and know all your neighbors, or you are home for their arrival. I live across from some apartment complexes so this makes me a bit nervous to have sitting outside for all to see for any amount of time.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased

Pros: Price and the fact that it was JBL sealed the deal. Part of a surround sound system, handles everything very well. Had to boost treble just a bit, these do not have titanium tweeters. Listen to all kinds of music and watch movies. I would purchase again.

Cons: None
