JBL Loft 40 125-watt, 5-1/4" two-way bookshelf speakers

For those audiophiles who yearn for speakers with great looks as well as great sound, we've designed the JBL® Loft Series. These speakers are slim, elegant audio components that range from compact bookshelf to robust tower speakers. One remarkably versatile set in the line is the Loft40. It's a pair of thin bookshelf speakers that offer listeners a great option for setting up a two-channel stereo or multichannel surround-sound system. Each speaker in the set features a 5-1/4-inch (133-millimeter) PolyBass woofer with FreeFlow port technology for big, clear and extended bass, and a 1-inch (25-millimeter) soft dome tweeter that can reach frequencies as high as 20kHz. Each speaker's tweeter features our proprietary Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal™ (EOS) waveguide, which evenly distributes sound throughout your listening space and makes every seat the best seat in the house. The Loft40 speakers handle up to 125 watts and use a Straight-Line Signal Path™ (SSP) design to help ensure that a strong, precise signal arrives at each driver with little alteration from its original source. And the speakers are beautiful to see, too. All in all, the Loft40s' breathtaking sound will impress you as much as their stunning looks.

Features

Loft 40

10 – 125 watts suggested amplifier range

JBL engineers designed the Loft40 bookshelf speakers to produce precise, exceptional sound from a receiver or amplifier capable of delivering up to 125 watts.

5-1/4" (133mm) PolyBass woofer

Paper produces the most natural sound of all driver materials. We've reinforced the Loft40's paper woofer cones with a proprietary polymer that provides additional stiffness and damping to the cone surface. These qualities provide the listener with tight bass and extended low frequencies without breakup or distortion.

1" (25mm) soft dome tweeter with EOS waveguide

The Loft40's tweeter features a 1-inch (25-millimeter) soft dome with high sensitivity and fast transient response for accurate high-frequency reproduction. The tweeter integrates with an EOS (Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal) waveguide, giving high-frequency sounds a wide, consistent listening window. The result is an incredibly broad stereo image across a huge listening area.

FreeFlow port technology

A rear-firing FreeFlow™ port is acoustically matched to the Loft40's woofer to move air out of the speaker's cabinet. You'll get extended bass response with low distortion, adding power to your music and excitement to your movie soundtracks.

Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) design

The ideal path from input to components to transducers is a straight line. The Loft40 takes that path. Its Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) technology preserves the clarity, detail and dynamics of your favorite audio content.

Accurate frequency response

The Loft40 doesn't over-emphasize or under-emphasize any sounds. With a frequency response of 55Hz ? 20kHz, it reproduces a true, full sound range from deep bass tones to ultrahigh frequencies.

4 out of 5 eggsGood sound, a bit pricy though

Pros: These have a smooth sound made better by using an external EQ, For clean mid's and high's these are great, Build quality, Small size.

Cons: Not nearly as bass heavy as the specs make it out to be and a subwoofer is definitely needed here.

Other Thoughts: I got these for use on my computer (they are magnetically shielded). I thought I could get by without a subwoofer, but no such luck here. There is some bass, but it's better off being EQ'd as the mid's and high's of the system for best results. I had a 100 watt Klipsch subwoofer that really rounded the sound off nicely, and make these a worthwhile addition to you're sound system. I just wish they were lower priced, as the full retail price from the Egg is a bit high for what you get here. I have used much cheaper Dayton's that also did a fine job as mentioned above when mixed with a decent subwoofer, and they do so for much less cash. I guess if you caught these on sale, the value would go up accordingly, so if you really wan't these, wait for a sale.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Bang For The Buck

Pros: For the money ,these speakers provide the Best sound money can buy, you must remember one important detail any speaker that's not given the hours required or recommended for breaking them in, you will not enjoy the beautiful well balanced sound these speakers put out remember having patience has its rewards when it comes to speakers. JBL is a Harmon Company that have been around for half of century ,producing professional equipment at its best that allows you to hear the truth like a speaker should. These speakers for the money you are paying , the sound is as great or better than many costing up to $199.00. I replaced the ones that came with my Denon DM-39 Micro system and the difference is an instant upgrade , the highs are crystal clear , the mids are very present and the bass is accurate tight and punchy, for the size.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for computer use

Pros: Excellent sound especially for the $44 I spent. I'm driving these with a Parasound Zamp which outputs 40 watts RMS per channel. More than enough power for near field computer use. What impresses me most is the bass response. To me it sounds like the bass extends to around 45 HZ instead of the claimed 55 HZ, Mid's and high's are smooth as well. Build quality is fine, not cheaply made like other's have said. You have to remember these speakers are not high-end, so you can't compare them to B&W's, etc. For the price, you can't get anything anywhere as good

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent addition

Pros: Tight, crisp, and clear.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought these to use as sides in my 6.1 setup. They compliment the fronts and rears very nicely, and hold their own with the rest of the system. The sides aren't supposed to draw your attention like the mains, and these do their part to perfection...suttle, yet polished. Great addition.

Pros: I am using 2 of these for my front height speakers in a 9.2 setup driven by my Marantz SR7008 and they sound great! No complaints. The range is excellent and they blend perfectly with the rest of my setup.

Cons: Great range.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW! Amazing speakers for the price

Pros: Great sound, very loud, great bass making my entertainment center vibrate, awesome tweeters can literally hear everything better than my old speakers.

Cons: Prob the fact that I'm gonna have to turn them down they drown out my center channel speaker, basically these have no cons
