5 out of 5 eggsgood receiver for the price

Pros: Sounds great compared to my old receiver. Has plenty of HMDI ports. Surround sound was easy to setup.

Cons: none, I researched quite a bit before buying. This was onsale at the price point I was willing to spend.

Other Thoughts: This receive destroys the sony I had before. The surround sound is much better and very easy to setup. I caught this on sale for $250. Well worth it at that price.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Nice when it worked!

Cons: As stated in other reviews, if you get a year or two out of these VSX receivers good luck. Waste of money. I loved mine, but it died so quickly it left a sour taste in my mouth to ever by another Pioneer product. My unit made it about a week past the warranty date. Go figure!

Other Thoughts: Make a great boat anchor if you need one!

2 out of 5 eggsnot reliable

Pros: When it works, it works great.

Cons: known fault (blown transistors) that causes early failure

Other Thoughts: The Pioneer VSX line, including the VSX5**, VSX8**, and VSX10** series all seem to have a fault that causes them to die within a couple of years. This happened to mine in Jan 2015 after 2 years of light use. It is now officially dead and I will never purchase another Pioneer product again. Read up on the issue at AVSforum under the "audio" section.

3 out of 5 eggsGoon number of HDMI inputs - no audio outputs

Pros: Good number of HDMI inputs - 1 of which is MHL, which allows me to use my old Roku 3400 stick. It has 4K capability and good specs for an inexpensive receiver - especially if you can get it on sale.

Cons: This is not meant to be an audio receiver for analog sources - I cannot connect my cassette deck, reel-to-reel tape deck, or DVD recorder if I want to record something as there are no audio outputs, nor can I connect my turntable as there are no inputs for one. And no HD Radio either - after all of these years.

Other Thoughts: I've been using Pioneer receivers for years without any problems and was looking for a 4K receiver with an MHL input - this fit the bill although it has extremely poor connectivity for analog sources - in addition to the 6 HDMI inputs, you only get 3 analog inputs. There are no component or S-Video inputs - so you're limited to lousy RCA connections for analog sources. What really threw me for a loop is that there are no audio outputs - so if you have analog recording equipment or wish to extend the signal to another receiver in your house, you are completely out of luck. Also, there are no connections for a turntable - yes, it's rare to have one these days, but it would be nice to incorporate connectivity for it. I still don't understand why they don't incorporate HD Radio - is there a licensing requirement that makes it much more expensive? This receiver is strictly meant for smaller home theaters as it's a 5.2, so if you have a small room, then this receiver is for you. For greater flexibility in connecting your equipment, look elsewhere.
