1 out of 5 eggsDon't Throw Your Money Away

Pros: 4 HDMI inputs

Cons: Add me to the long list of owners who had their Pioneer VSX-524 go dead. It's hard to understand how something can sit on a shelf, work fine, and then just quit working after a year and fifteen days (15 days after warranty expired!) with a name like Pioneer. I could understand if I rolled the dice on a no name brand, but I expected way more from Pioneer.

There are too many stories here and other places that this model, and I hate to say it, but the Pioneer brand, is broken. Don't waste your money, no matter how good of a deal.

Other Thoughts: I do NOT recommend this product.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your time/money

Pros: None

Cons: Sub-woofer line out on the receiver didn't work from day one. I used the speaker level inputs on my sub and that worked OK for a short time. The unit completely stopped making any sound less than a week after installation. The USB input doesn't even recognize working thumb drives with music on them. I've already mailed the rebate so Newegg won't take it back without the UPC on the box. This door-stop replaced a 20 year old Pioneer receiver that I now have to get out of the closet until I can buy another brand of receiver. This is my last Newegg purchase (15 year customer) and my last Pioneer purchase.

Other Thoughts: This purchase makes me feel very cheated.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy this

Pros: Would have been nice if it had worked properly

Cons: Had this unit setup for 2 weeks, nearly everyday I had to spend an hour trying to get the unit to reset so the sound would work. When I called the tech support I was on hold for over an hour before ever speaking to a human. All the tech support did was verify my connections and setup then have me rest the unit. Additionally the mic that came with the unit for the auto sound level setup didn't work.

Other Thoughts: I am returning this and buying a unit made by a different manufacturer

Pros: Decent looking and has a nice selection of ports, but ... (see cons)

Cons: - Did not work at all.
- Powers off after two minutes with a red indicator light blinking and clicking sounds through speakers. Disconnected everything except power but still won't work

1 out of 5 eggsDead after a year.

Pros: Worked perfect when it worked.

Cons: Got this from Sams club for my 75" tv surround sound. It worked great for a year then suddenly died. I tried to get it warrantied through pioneer but they weren't having it. I'm a computer tech of 18 years so I opened it to check the board and caps to replace whatever it needed buy never could find the problem. Got another brand and it's working great. Wouldn't but again.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of Entry Level Pioneer

Pros: Great price point.

Cons: Ok, I know a lot of people get scalded by reviewers here for not owning a product, but please hang with me here. Like another reviewer mentioned, I have had the unfortunate luck of owning two entry level Pioneer receivers. The first I bought here on Black Friday and it threw an error after 6 months. Dead. The second I also bought here at Newegg last Black Friday (The 521). I hooked up, listened to it once, then didn't touch it again for a long while. It threw an error as well and quit working. I got BOTH here at Newegg on Black Friday specials. Not Newegg's fault, but I would try another brand. Just a word to the wise... I replaced mine with a cheap(ish) Sony. No problems.

Other Thoughts: Yamaha and Sony make some decent, cheap receivers.
