5 out of 5 eggsGreat plasma picture on a great looking TV

Pros: I did weeks of research before I spotted this gem on Newegg. The price was amazing, $1,599.00 right before they discontinued it. I was looking for a plasma display as I'm not a fan of the 120-240Hz 'soap opera' effect you find on newer LED/LCD displays and I love the deep blacks plasma displays are capable of producing.

This TV has an amazing display. Blu rays are extremely vivid, colors are accurate (even on the preset 'BD Wise' picture mode) and the detail is amazing, even in the darker scenes. If the scene takes place in a cave, you can actually see the detail of the cave rock in the shadows.

I haven't had a chance to view HD sources like cable or satellite on this TV as of yet, as I don't subscribe to any of those services. I can, however, vouch that Netflix rocks on this TV. Using the Smart Hub Netflix app, I'm able to stream 1080p and 5.1 sound with no freezing or buffering. The picture quality is very impressive and I'm pleases with the wi-fi / streaming experience so far.

Perhaps less important to some people, this TV is gorgeous (and freakin huge!). It has a quality feel and a quality look. I personally like the chrome accent of the 4 leg stand but what makes the TV really stand out is the brushed metal framing, which isn't large at all. It is a relatively thin border all around which helps give the TV the 'newer' look you expect from higher end LED/LCD's. Very good looking TV on the stand, I imagine even better looking when mounted.

The sound is what is to be expected from a flat screen television. It's hard to produce big sound from such a confined, flat chassis, but this TV actually does pretty well. Using is 'surround sound' emulator mode, it actually produces believable room filling sound. Nothing compared to a good 5.1 surround setup, but it does the job nicely.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Cons: I don't have any huge dislikes about this TV but I will mention a couple of things here, as the 'cons' section really is the more useful of the two, isn't it? :)

- The remote control. In my opinion, it's gimicky. It does have a full qwerty on the flip side of the remote, but it seems to have very limited applicable uses (e.g., does not work with Netflix, Hulu, etc.). It seems to work well enough while using the Samsung apps or features, however. The functionality of the remote also seems slow / sluggish. When scrolling through items on Netflix and other apps there is some amount of lag between pressing the button on the remote and the resulting action being performed by the TV. Not a huge deal, but worth a mention.

- TV reboots occasionally. Seems to be random and has only happened a couple of times in the ~2 months that I've owned it. Once while watching Netflix and another while watching Hulu, both via the Smart Hub. I have not seen this happen while watching TV over the antenna or while watching a blu ray, so maybe it's Smart Hub / App related. These TV's have computers in them, and computers are prone to reboot or crash now and again, so this certainly hasn't been a big deal.

Other Thoughts: All in all I would definitely recommend this purchase, if the TV wasn't already discontinued, to a friend. One of the few big ticket purchases I've been completely satisfied with over the past few years. Great picture, decent sound and a decent Smart Hug / App setup as well. Was already a Samsung fan and this TV doesn't disappoint.

5 out of 5 eggsPN64D8000

Pros: Great price on a highly rated TV. Samsung's are consistently among the top plasmas each year. Did hours of research an concluded that based on performance and price this was the TV to buy and I was not disappointed.

Delivery was a breeze. Drive helped me open and inspect before signing and did not rush me in looking it over. It was in perfect condition and continues look and work perfectly.

Cons: NONE

4 out of 5 eggsQuality is unbelievable, many features

Pros: Just bought this plasma at my local Lowes store on sale. It's razor thin and the video quality is amazing. I also own a 51 in plasma by Samsung (720p) and it still works like a charm. However, this new 64in is crisp, fast, and has lots of good features. I also appreciate the quality 3D (although I'm not into 3D as much as a good 2D movie).

There are 4 HDMI's which is 2 more than my 51in and makes connecting my computers, Blu-Ray and cable box super simple and cuts the clutter massively. Also, the wifi connection is easy peasy.

There are many other pro's but I think a review with only pros is useless to the consumer.

Cons: 2 cons. (#2 is more important)

1) Sometimes, when you are on an app and want to get off that app and go to Smart Hub, it can take a solid 30 seconds which for its price is way too much time. (I have 20MB/s net so it's not my internet) When I click Smart Hub on the remote, I expect it to get there in 2 seconds max. This is not that big of a deal because I don't use too many apps (Netflix mostly and skype sometimes), but I know there are younger folks out there who love their music and video apps and this would really stress them out.

2) I can't connect my Logitech HD webcam to this TV. Either Logitech needs to conform to Samsung standards or Samsung needs to work like my computer which can download standard drivers from Logitech website and be compatible with them. I really don't want to go pay $170 for the Samsung Webcam after I just bought this TV, a new blu-ray surround system and a fireplace stand which cost me already a lot of money (around $4k).

Surely Samsung (or Logitech) can come to some sort of agreement in which the consumer benefits. They need to stop jerking us around. When a TV is valued at $3700, it better shine your shoes on the way out, if you know what I mean.

Other Thoughts: Other than my two cons, there is no other TV out there that can compare to this Samsung. I've done my research. The video quality is brilliant. The 3D is nice (as long as you have the battery powered glasses of course). The simplicity of the sleek and slim design is supreme.
