You'd expect that a great monitor maker would also make great TVs, and you would be right. This 16" HDTV from ViewSonic combines the best of both worlds for an excellent dual purpose screen. It starts out with a 1366x768 resolution for an incredibly detailed picture. The 8ms response time and dynamic 10,000:1 contrast ratio deliver an image you'd expect to see on larger sets.

Because it's a ViewSonic, the obligatory VGA input goes along with the coax input for cable or antenna signals. There are also 2 HD inputs-1 HDMI and 1 component. A composite port and an S-Video plug round out the connection choices. Cable, computer, game console, hook them all up with room for more.

  • newegg HDTV Ready With a maximum resolution of 1366x768 (16:9), the widescreen ViewSonic N1630w fully supports up to HDTV 720p (1280x720, progressive) for a truly high-definition experience.
  • newegg ClearPicture Electronics Technology ViewSonic's ClearPicture Electronics Technology effectively eliminates noise, increases contrast and detail and optimizes color for rich, vibrant high-definition images and incredibly smooth, sharp images even with standard TV programming.
  • newegg HDMI Input The ViewSonic N1630w features an HDMI input to receive high-definition digital video and audio through a single, convenient cable connection. HDMI's appeal has made it the choice interface for a broad selection of HD-capable video devices and gaming consoles.
  • newegg Built-in ATSC Tuner Armed with a built-in ATSC tuner, the ViewSonic N1630w displays digital over-the-air programming without additional digital set-top equipment.
  • newegg PC Compatible With a D-Sub (VGA) port, the ViewSonic N1630w conveniently doubles as a computer monitor!

3 out of 5 eggsPC monitor use = not the best.

Pros: Plenty of inputs (HDMI, VGA, etc)

Cons: HDMI with PC doesn't really give much above it's native resolution. It is limited to 29/30 Hz refresh in 1080I mode and 16 bit colors. Text below 12 point is almost unreadable at the highest resolution and I shudder at any graphics on the screen from the PC.

And, the VGA input won't even try to go above it's native resolution without creating a custom profile in your driver software.

As a PC monitor and if you're used to (or wanting) 1920x1080, forget it. The 1080I + 30 Hz + 16-bit color = good thing NewEgg doesn't have this anymore.

Other Thoughts: See above.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little Screen

Pros: Bright image
lots of connections
nice large button remote
great screen size
VESA mounting
Clear QAM tuner, will find free digital channels when connected to cable.

Cons: speakers, but not using those...
Kinda thick for LCD, but Power supply is built in, (NO BRICK!!)
Menu is hard to see as the OSD background is blue to white from left to right, the text is white so you can't read the part on the right hand side very well.

Other Thoughts: I purchased 13 of these screens to use in a TV studio production area. Our old black and white CRT's are dying and these little screens work great.

I noticed that older reviews of this TV say the viewing angle is bad, but I find they are much better than other screens I compared to in the stores.

I am guessing that ViewSonic changed the panels they are sourcing in these at some point but didn't change the model number.

It is a great little TV and with VGA, component, HDMI there is nothing you can't hook to it...

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Audio, Dropped Channels

Pros: Excellent picture quality. Great connectivity and functionality.

Cons: Worst audio quality I've ever heard. Fortunately, there is a headset output which can be connected to external speakers. However, the power is so low that they need to be powered speakers to get adequate volume.

Channel scanning takes about ten minutes. Some of the channels get dropped infrequently for no apparent reason, which requires a re-scan.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very sharp picture and great color. Love the thinness and easy setup.

Cons: Must warm up a few moments while showing the ViewSonic screen saver. But very briefly

Other Thoughts: I have had a 22" in my sun room now for nearly a year. Because it has been so reliable and good I am getting this 16" one for my husband's new office! He uses the 22" at home all the time. I also don't know what the man below is talking about. The specs say nothing about the ability to tilt, etc.

3 out of 5 eggsJust a review

Pros: Looks good and fits well under the kitchen cabinets - only had 14 inches. The picture is fine as long as you don't get too far off in the weeds. It does tilt, so that helps the viewing some. The set up went very smooth and we can view a whole lot of channels even without the box on the cable.

Cons: The sound is terrible. If anyone says otherwise, they need their hearing checked. I wonder why ViewSonic can put a better speaker on my desk monitor than on their TV. I would return it for that reason alone and is the reason I only gave it three eggs.

Other Thoughts: If you are limited for space, this will fulfill that need very well.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Kitchen TV for the price

Pros: Easy to use/setup. So far we have used for standard analog and HDTV straight off the cable (no DVD playing yet and may use as a PC monitor at some point but that was not the reason we got it). Since this unit has a QAM filter we can pick up all non scrambled HD signals off our cable w/o a box. The picture quality for both HD and analog is excellent.
Others have complained about the sound but I would rate it a B considering the limited physical size and 2.5W amplifier, it meets my expectations. In setup music mode it sounds fine on all channels-yes there is no bass but what do you expect?!

Cons: The picture quality viewing angle as mentioned in other reviews is not the best. It does tilt up/down which helps somewhat but when you get about 30 degrees (60 degree total viewing angle) off center either way the darks especially looks pastey. Our point of comparison is our 2 year old 42" Sony LCD HD Bravia which has about a 170degree viewing angle and cost just under $2K so this is like comparing a small subcompact car to a Mercedez but it could have been better. Perhaps we can buy a $25 under cabinet mount to make it more flexible for turning but for now we are just trying out a couple countertop locations.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my wife as a Christmas present to use in the kitchen and perhaps as a spare (for a bedroom or hobby room TV), it fits that purpose fine. For $190 after rebate we can live with that, at 6 lbs it's much easier to lug around than our 25 year old portable with limited channels.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little TV

Pros: Looks good, Compact size, Undercabinet mountable.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: No problems. Screen looks ok with satellite TV hooked up, not phenomenal but definitely acceptable.

4 out of 5 eggsGood LCD for Less $$$

Pros: Nice little Widescreen LCD. This picture is quite nice. I've seen less quality picture in more expensive lcd's. I also liked that after channel scanning, the DTV channels automatically follow the regular channels - i.e. 8 to 8-1 to 8-2 by simply channel surfing.

Cons: I've seen a lot of reviews on this about the viewing angles. Most of these are true that viewing angles are limited - straight on = great, side to side or up or down = not so great.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent TV

Pros: It's a ViewSonic. Price was right, the rebate and free shipping ( thanks Newegg!) made it even nicer. Good TV for the kitchen or other small area. HD cable looks pretty good but only after a bit of tinkering with the menu options. Looks decent when hooked up and used as a PC monitor. ( You may have to move the vertical and horizontal screen position after it adjusts for the resolution of 1360x768. )

Cons: You get what you pay for. The speakers are pretty bad, I had to turn the treble down to get rid of a noticeable hiss. Even without the hiss the speaker quality just isn't good. The viewing angle is also pretty limited, watch this TV from straight on. Not many options in the menu to customize the image quality. It would have also been nice if you could adjust the screen position from the base. The response time and contrast are what you would expect for a TV of this price.

Other Thoughts: It does the job.

5 out of 5 eggsi'm happy

Pros: It's big,
good price
it works.
Great picture
no dead pixels

Cons: speakers are small

Other Thoughts: this tv was for my 18 wheeler so the sound is ok not great but ok
the base is way to unstable to let standing in a moving vehicle i will need to mount this to the interior wall but for just at home base would do just fine.
