4 out of 5 eggsGreat TV

Pros: Very sharp picture and colors, easy to navigate menus, nice easy to use remote, fantastic value for the price

Cons: The biggest con is that the TV does not have a Zoom feature. Your choices for aspect ration are full 16:9 or 4:3. Since there is no zoom feature, any widescreen dvds that are not anamorphic will have to be watched in 4:3 ratio which will cut the 42" screen down to about a 26" screen. The speakers are not the best, but this can mostly be corrected by setting up custom sound settings.

Other Thoughts: The lack of a zoom feature is a minor drawback, since most dvds are released in anamorphic. Overall the TV has a fantastic picture that makes any HD very immersive. I have been very happy over the years with Sceptre's LCD computer monitors, and this TV shows that they also make high quality Televisions as well.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a Deal

Pros: Let me start off by telling you the real reason this television deserves 5 eggs. I payed 450$ with free shipping which is just over half price. The picture quality is on par with mid-range sets and has an easy menu system which is helpful in fine tuning the picture as the factory settings are pretty bad. Plenty of hookups and a clean and modern bezel.

Cons: I geek out on tech so even at the price I payed I have to go over the downfalls of bargain shopping. The low contrast ratio is evident in movies like Sherlock Holmes where there is more dark and gritty scenes, this set fairs better in picture quality on brighter cinematography and games. As another reviewer pointed out there is a setting (MEMC) which needs to be switched off from the start. It makes static scenes smoother but when the camera pans quickly objects in the scene seem to jutter and jerk around. I would also advise taking the time to set the colors/brightness/contrast the first time you turn on the set.

The last con I am sad to say is the brand name Sceptre. This tv is a testament to the companies ability to make a quality product at bargain prices but it is not a well known brand, it was my first Sceptre purchase and I must say I was extremely nervous when I clicked "purchase"

Other Thoughts: I bought this set for my office where we have a little break room filled with couches and gaming systems. I was not looking for a top of the line tv but I did want it to be big enough for slit screening and 4 player use. I originally searched on craigslist but on the day I was going to go look at a 42" vizio I did a last search on Newegg and found this deal.

This is a great set, it has everything you could want in a 42" tv and more. If you are looking for a bargain tv I would recommend this to anyone. Nobodies jaw is going to drop at the picture quality, but it will when you tell them how much you bought it for. Besides its a true 1080p television, you still get all the amazing detail, the only true difference in any lcd is the contrast ratio and maybe viewing angle.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, reasonably priced 42" LCD

Pros: Good picture for the price, lots of inputs for HD devices, and works. bought when it was on sale for $620 on newegg...couldn't pass it up, especially as the Mitsubishi 42" CRT HD TV it replaced had already died...

Cons: Only 1 RCA input, not good for use with legacy devices, of which I have a lot

Other Thoughts: If you just want a 42" LCD and don't care about bells and whistles or streaming content (hooked up to my pc and a wii...so I don't need this anyways) then this is a good LCD.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty great TV

Pros: I received this TV in the mail a few days ago and I'm just blown away by it. I didn't have that high of expectations going into this purchase (I saw 42" and a cheap price and I dove at it) but I'm really glad I did. Before buying this TV I had no idea who Sceptre was -brand wise- and I'm happy to say I'll definitely buy from them again. I'm running my PS3 and PC via HDMI and the quality is fantastic! Playing PC games like Crysis, WoW, Mafia II demo, etc look brilliant and the refresh rate is excellent. The screen is also REALLY bright. I'm using it as my main monitor and it sits about 3 feet infront of me and I have to squint sometimes so...I wouldn't recommend sitting that close. And by bright, I mean blinding..and it's on half backlight! The screen itself is sort of glossy. Not iMac screen glossy, but it does have a hint of sheen - not really an issue. It's 42 freakin inch!

Cons: Before mentioning the cons..I have to say I'm a mini perfectionist and I like shinny things and things that work so It was semi disheartening to turn the TV on and see one dead pixel near the center of the screen. Not a huge deal. It's the first time I've ever owned a product with a dead pixel. You can't really tell when the screen is displaying something dark but sometimes I see it looking at me, all...dead and stuff...laughing manically...and I just want to hit it and cry.....

Lastly when I play blu ray movies via my PS3...they play at (what seems) 60 fps - meaning it looks like the movie was shot using a camcorder and not 24fps like a normal movie. I'll have to research more on how to fix this issue. Also the stand is stationary, it doesn't swivel.

Other Thoughts: Like the reviews before me state; the color via HDMI will need a lot of tinkering. But fear not because the menus are really easy to navigate so you'll have no issues adjusting it. The included remote is actually really nice! It's back lit and it has a rubber border in case it's dropped - I was impressed. It also comes with a cleaning cloth and batteries for the remote. Oh, it's heavy too. Did I mention it's 42"!?

And, as usual, Newegg's amazingly fast service. WTB more retailers like Newegg...

5 out of 5 eggsDecent for the price

Pros: I don't own this but know some who does, I just had to comment because I hate seeing people make comments when they have no clue. It is a 1080P 42" screen it has the same "Dot Pitch" as any 1080P screen that is 42" because 1080P is a standardized resolution and has a standardized number of pixels per inch on an LCD/LED screen.

Cons: People claim this or that yet are clueless

Other Thoughts: Sceptre makes a decent product for the price, they have the same problems as all manufactures of a certain number making it through quality control that shouldn't have, but for the most part most of their TVs work well, hold up decent and are a good bang for the buck...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy

Pros: The dot pitch is fantastic so you get a very clean picture even up close. Picture in/on Picture has great features and works nicely, wife can channel surf while I get the movie ready on the computer. The 42" size is perfect, big enough I'm not squinting in a big room, but not big enough that I don't feel like I shouldn't be pulling down the projector screen for an even bigger experience. Brightness is more than adequate at half. Bezel isn't too large. Love the selection of inputs, should have gone DVI instead of the VGA, but makes no matter when you can just use one of the 4 HDMI inputs. Sceptre's always been a great LCD Panel manufacturer, I've owned their screens or their OEM screens in the past and have always been pleased, this is my first foray into their TV lineup, but so far I'm not disappointed in my choice.

Cons: The colour reproduction through the HDMI from a computer seems more contrasty than the VGA, takes a little more tinkering to get it right. Seems like it's impossible to get the full desktop visible when the computer is set to 1080 using the VGA, the computer lists it's native resolution as 720 which displays fine, there are no drivers for the panel, so not a lot of flexibility there. The panel is a little thick at 4 1/2 inches compared to other comparable TV's.

Other Thoughts: I had to turn off the "overscan" from the computer to get the full desktop visible. If the TV wasn't on sale when I bought it I might have given it a 4 out of 5 for the value, but since it was, the value was exceptional.

5 out of 5 eggsgood goin sceptre

Pros: Beautiful picture with plenty of options to set the view how you want it
Dark blacks and you can set the brightness far beyond what I care to do
Has virtually any input and output you could want on a tv

Cons: Speakers could be better but that stands for most tvs these days and it has both digital and analog out for external speakers anyhow
Tv only comes up as a 60hz when using it as a monitor, which is my primary usage for it but still comes across great even with that

Other Thoughts: I mostly got this because I wanted to use it for media and my 360 but find myself using it for pretty well everything as my computer is my media and gaming center and still loving the thing

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product, Excellet Price

Pros: I bought this as a TV for my bedroom, which I rarely use, so I was not too concerned with having the "Absolute Best" available. However, I have been VERY pleasantly surprised by the quality of the picture and of the TV set in general. I would say that this set holds its own with much higher priced premium sets. I can highly recommend this set...

Cons: This set comes with the MEMC mode enabled and set on "high". This mode makes for a veerrryy strange viewing experience because of the unnatural smoothness of slow moving scenes and heavy aliasing in action heavy scenes. Simply switching this mode to "off" or "low" eliminates this issue.

Other Thoughts: certainly NOT the best TV out there, and true videophiles will probably not be fully satisfied with this TV. But, the value is undeniable -- and the picture quality is quite good!

5 out of 5 eggsworking great

Pros: Tried this out with both coax and digital inputs, across analog input I'd go smaller but as for hd and as my monitor, this thing is working great.
Another bonus being the cheap price but overall I'd say it's pretty well ranking up there with the best of em.

Cons: Started off a bit bright for me but that was easy enough to fix.

Speakers could use some base to em but you do have your choice of outputs to choose your favorite kinds of speakers to flow out to if you're not using the ones on the tv and it has some options for types of things you're doing like gaming, listening to music or vocals so at least it gives ya some options.

Other Thoughts: Bought this thing to use with my computer for gaming and movies and thus far is meeting my expectations with all that the refresh rate is only reading as 60hz but not sure which to blame that one and either way the picture is still incredible.
Also using it with my 360 and working well for that.

3 out of 5 eggsRidiculously good television.

Pros: - 42" without the high price.
- 120Hz without the high price.
- All the connections you want.... without the high price.
- ATSC/QAM digital tuner built-in.
- Looks better and crisper than my friend's tv... which had a high price.
- This should go without saying, but Newegg ROCKS my socks... and doesn't have high prices.

Cons: - Occasionally, my TV will freak out for a split second (like... sometimes I swear I'm imagining it except for the fact that it has happened enough that it has to be the TV) and will display something weird. It's hard to explain, but imagine the entire screen turning into nothing but vertical lines made up of super grainy rainbow colors. It doesn't irritate me that much... but I'd prefer it not happen. Minus 1/2 egg
- This television is NOT legacy software or resolution friendly! Be forewarned! I tried playing a couple old video games on my PC that run at full-screen 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions and they were off center to the point of being off screen. I have tried to troubleshoot this myself, but to no avail. Minus 1 egg.

Other Thoughts: I'd rate this TV at 3 and 1/2 over all, mostly because of the lack of support for legacy resolutions. I understand this is a large television which is intended to work at HD level resolutions, but if it has a PC input, it really SHOULD support all resolutions that a PC does. I mean, the above mentioned friend has a 40" (No, not 42") that DOES support 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions... then again, he has a major name brand TV with special drivers that help support legacy software and resolutions.

Sceptre, release a driver for this television, please, so I can actually run my legacy software... PLEASE? With sugar on top?
