Unbelievable!
- Pros: Contrast/blacks are amazing, Optimum mode takes care of all the adjustments very well, no need to play with color/picture settings,Light sensor great for nightime, Sound is sweet, lots of depth, amazing simulated surround, great center channel voice emulation, just add a sub and your done, even the surround sound in the headphone jack is great, sounds like there is a quality amp on it, my Denon AHD-5000 headphones blaze with bass. Response time with 72hz 3:3 pulldown for movies is the smoothest motion enhancement I have seen. Menu is very easy to operate and love how the picture shrinks down to the side when in the menu. I have read lots of reviews on this model saying how great it is, but seeing is believing. This is the best flat panel I have seen. Most of all Newegg is the best, they had the best deal with a free pioneer blu-ray, while supplies last of coarse, everywhere else was charging about the same without the player. Neweggs top notch shipping gave me confidence to buy it here
- Cons: Doesn't stretch HD signals for Blu-Ray or DVD that are 235:1 or 185:1 evenly to fill the whole screen, only stretches width not height, but most people watch it normal without stretch, so this isn't a deal breaker for me.
- Other Thoughts: My job is TV's and I have lots of experience with lots of brands of flat panels and this is the best picture by far. LCD looks like garbage in comparison. Of coarste there are some nice LCD's out there if you need it to do other things like PC or Video games, I have an LG LCD 47" for that, but if you are looking for TV and especially Movies for a Videophile, this is it.
Outstanding
- Pros: The color gamut on this plasma is amazing. The black levels are also amazing. I had a rear projection 420p Toshiba for 8 years that needed to be replaced. After a lot of research and "eye time" in the stores, I decided this was the one for me. It has an huge array of hookups. Side panel hookups are easy to reach. Especially for you all that do wall mounts. When I first fired it up, my eyes noticed the different color space. It did need some tweaking to please me, and all the available settings allowed me to achieve visual harmony. I got the bluray deal, and this plasma paired with the player is awesome. I also like how the set can handle non HD channels with dynamic side bars or dot4dot display. I placed the unit on a white Prism50 media bench. Completely changes my media room. This is a set I will be happy with for many a year, which is what I was looking for. Oh, and the speakers sound great too, given their somewhat slim size.
- Cons: I haven't found one yet. If you place you hand close to the screen area you will feel the radiant heat. But, it doesn't heat the room anymore than my old tv.
- Other Thoughts: The glossy frame plastic will have a smudgy shipping residue on it. It cleans of easily, but be sure to use the softest cloth you have so you don't put spider web scratches on it. Also, it comes with a soft lens cloth for cleaning the plasma screen area. Nice to have that. You will spend the most time calibrating the colors for pleasing skin tones. after a day or so you will have it dialed in. You should consider the extended warranty no matter what manufacturer you choose as these things seem to only come with a 1 year manufacturer warranty. And read the manual so you know why the tv is doing what it is doing and how to change it if you don't like it. It is a very sophisticated piece of equipment.

Great TV
- Pros: Great TV, contrast ratio is through the roof, grayscale is very accurate, black level are (of course) amazing. Color saturation is unmatched. This is the best picture I have ever seen. Once properly calibrated this thing really is great.
Speaker is removable. Great if you use a dedicated home theater, it really frees up room for your center speaker.
- Cons: Color temperature is slightly off out of the box and there are no settings in the user menu that will allow you to adjust these. You have to purchase ControlCal and hook your TV up to a PC to adjust color. the good news is you can get it very accurate it's just going to cost you 60 dollars for the equipment and takes a pretty high tech level to pull it off.
- Other Thoughts: There are some people posting in here that have no idea what they are talking about. You should stay away from most of the picture modes on this TV. Movie mode is the most accurate color out of the box and should be used whenever possible. Also, avoid "smooth" cinema mode. It will make the picture look like a soap opera.
Great TV
- Pros: Awesome picture, enough options to satisfy the average tech head. Compliments a blu ray player very nicely.
- Cons: Pioneer is going out of the plasma business. This is probably the last year you will see the Kuro. Unless Panasonic decides to continue it since they have bought it out. Just google it.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure you check your shipment. First one I had delivered had a huge crack on the front. Of course New Eggs customer service was on top of it.
The best and worth it
- Pros: "No pro calibration needed" accurate picture when set to Movie Mode: 6,400K average greyscale +/- 100K from 10-90IRE, 2.27 average Gamma. Natural looking color despite having a larger gamut than the REC 709 standard. Natural sharpness with no edge enhancement. Awesome motion detail. No image retention or burn-in to speak of. Great sounding speakers. Competent video processing for the most part. Advance mode which reproduces 24hz sources at 72hz works well without the artifacts or other side-effects seen in the 120hz modes of LCD sets, and it really makes a difference in reducing judder. Lots of flexible aspect ratio controls including 1:1 pixel mapping for 1080i/p signals and dedicated 4:3 modes. Multiple zoom modes for both 16:9 and 4:3 material available for fans of those. Home Media Gallery is useful for the file types it supports. Last but not least, the very best black levels you will find anywhere on a flatpanel and it truly does make the difference!
- Cons: Larger color gamut is hard coded and cannot be adjusted to match REC 709 for those who are insistent upon having accurate color primaries (this didn't bother me personally, I think the expanded gamut looks great). Dithering visible at close distances in solid colors (though I only ever see it on test patterns). All plasmas do this so it isn't really a con for this model. Some panel buzz audible, again inherent to this technology. Extended viewing of letterboxed or pillarboxed material brings the possibility of the edges of the display eventually looking a bit brighter due to less age on those pixels. Initial channel scan takes forever. Only one component video input (but 2 composite?). All other video modes besides Movie Mode are garbage, ranging from OPTIMUM (okay at best), to the independent per input STANDARD (absolutely terrible gamma with severe black crush). Thus the only picture mode that is adjustable per input is the one that provides the worst picture quality.
- Other Thoughts: All of my external sources, both HDMI and component, had the same reference black point so calibrating the levels in Movie Mode for one of them suited them all. This is a good thing since Movie Mode is the only picture mode where the Kuro actually produces a good picture. OPTIMUM is okay if you are not picky, but it oversaturates color and produces a too-blue greyscale and a slightly s-shaped gamma curve that does not look very natural. The other picture modes get progressively worse with those last two qualities and they cannot be adjusted anywhere in the user menu. The remote is okay to use. Lots of similarly shaped small buttons, but it's the right size and well made with all the necessary controls needed. The set starts up and turns off quickly. The Kuro has earned its reputation for a reason. It truly does have the best picture you can find in a flatpanel. The depth of black produces a depth of picture that really draws you into movies. Shame it's the last of its kind.
