5 out of 5 eggsAwesome TV!

Pros: The picture is great. Blue-ray and 360 games look stunning. I didn't think I would get into all the extra features like Amazn streaming and such. Surprisingly, I've found those to be incredibly valuable. I've already purchased some HD programming from Amazn on Demand and it streams beautifully to this TV

Cons: The Home interface (where you access all the special features) is set up like a PSP interface (probably like a PS3 too, but I don't have one to compare it to). It's good, but kind of clunky if you have a content category that has a lot of stuff in it.

It took some doing to get it to output via RCA cable to my surround system. Although it has RCA outputs clearly designed for a sound system, at first it would not output to them. After some tinkering, I got it to work.

Other Thoughts: Overall a fantastic television. The whole design of the thing is pleasing to the eye- even when it's turned off. Most of my friends say wow when they walk in the room and see this thing sitting in the corner. I know it's only 40 inches, but it still looks rather impressive.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing tv!

Pros: Amazing picture, replaced a 2 month old KDL-40S5100. The 60hz refresh on the old one was just killing us, and this one has the 240 which surprisingly makes a huge difference. Plenty of connectors.

Cons: Found cheaper at a local retailer with free bluray player for 970 out the door, newegg prob charges a tad more for shipppin? eitherway they need to get a tad more competitive with their televisions.

Other Thoughts: If i had the money, I would stick one of these in every room of the house, including the office.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice HDTV

Pros: The Picture is very clear when watching HD. HD sports look amazing and clear on this TV. Can play mpeg videos directly from USB port or through Ethernet port connected to DLNA media server. I use the free open source MiniDLNA DLNA Media Server and run it on an Ubuntu Linux box. It took a bit of tweaking but it works great. I can put all of the home movies on the server and watch them on the TV through the Ethernet. No more burning DVDs!

Stays cool and does not give off too much heat.

It has a Cinema mode that dims the screen. This is nice when watching movies in the dark. You can turn this mode on and off manually.

The remote is very nicely setup and intuitive to use.

Cons: 40" seemed so big when I bought this. I wish now that I bought the 46" or 50"!

Non HD cable channels look somewhat grainy and blurry. I guess this is the same with all HDTV but it came as a surprise to me because this was my first HDTV.

All but one of the HDMI ports are on the left side. Like the first reviewer said you can see the cables sticking out the side of the TV if the cables are thick.

Other Thoughts: Once you connect this TV to the Internet it will update the software and then download a bunch of Internet video source websites like YouTube (15 or 20 of them). All of these sources clog up your menu structure and are a pain to navigate through to find the USB and DLNA Server Input sources. I have not figures out any way to get rid of them. If you don't plan to use these sources (they really don't look too good anyway as they are lower resolution and look grainy) then I suggest not connecting this TV to the Internet. For the software updates go to the Sony website, download the updates to a USB memory stick and update the TV that way.

You can turn off the backlighting on the Sony logo if you hunt around in the menus. It took me a while to figure this out.

4 out of 5 eggsXBR Without The Xtra Cost

Pros: About 99% of the tech, etc., found on the XBR9 model at less cost...
240 hz with motionflow technology...
Good clear picture and natural looking color from Bravia 3 engine...
Decent adjustment range for most settings that provide natural looking results...
Plenty of I/O connectivity (4 HDMI, 2 Component, optical) including older tech (composite/S-Video)...
Online connectivity and widgets allows you to get access to additional content, including movies, and information...

Cons: Most of the HDMI connectors are on the side panel, recessed which is a waste of cable and causes thicker/better cables to stickout from behind the panel. You'll want thinner cables or some kind of 90 degree adapter. Natural looking color can be a bit dull sometimes...particularly if you are used to bright/oversaturated gloss panels like Samsungs. It can also be a bit dark by comparison to Sammy's, even with the panel lamp on full/max. It just has a different look..not worse, just different. Online connectivity is cool, but most things like youtube video look horrible at higher resolutions. If you don't already have streaming Netflix on another device, it's pretty cool and works pretty well if you have a good strong connection. (I'm using wired to switch).

Other Thoughts: Well, to start with, this was delivered without being double boxed, etc., and the top was open (remote was hanging out). There has to be a better way. But, the TV seems fine thus far (whew). I have zero bad pixels, and the panel looks great. I previously have owned Samsung TVs and we always like them, but have had too many problems with them (last one broke twice). So, thought we'd change up this time and try the sony. It's distinctly different in that the color and panel brightness is all about "natural" looking color, where as Samsung tends to be very saturated and bright. Its taking a little getting used to. Turning the Motionflow on the strangest thing I've ever seen. It makes it look like you are watching them film the scene in your living room. The camera focus becomes much more intense and actors are separated more from the background. It looks like a stage/theater live performance and you are in front row. Works for some things, looks weird on others.
