5 out of 5 eggsFaux 120hz

Pros: It's a big shiny new TV and it should make you really happy if that's what you're into.

Cons: None as long as you actually understand this is NOT 120hz.

Other Thoughts: I have tested many screens to learn about different technologies.

This "120hz" is NOT real.
120hz means you get 120 unique frames a second.
What "Tru 120hz" or whatever they call is does is..
Simply double each frame, blurring and intelligently shifting it towards the next frame so SIMULATE smoothness.

Yes for TV, movies, sports and such it might make it easier to watch. But it will not make the image more crisp like a TRUE 120hz MONITOR can do.

Also with most content being locked to 25-30fps even if it were a true 120 screen you wouldn't reap any benifits.

Also, the entire faux 120hz process, well.. It takes processing.
Which equals time required to do so, which equals INPUT LAG.

You can NOT use this faux 120hz in video games properly.
You will notice lag, and if you don't you'll simply be very confused why you're sucking worse than you usually do.

You MUST disable all on-monitor processing to enjoy lag free gaming. AKA "Game mode".

Also remember that often theres a single higher quality HDMI port than the others you should be using for any video game device or as a PC monitor (still impossible to get 120hz through PC on this screen, sorry)

So if you're buying this for it's 120hz. STOP NOT.
And buy a PROPER, true 120hz PC MONITOR.
They have 27' products available these days.
And I believe even a 32' 120hz PC MONITOR.. I think..

Make sure your GPU has the proper DUAL-LINK DVI support, or displayport. Make sure the cable you're using to plug in your screen is DUAL-LINK DVI as well. As normal DVI cables can't carry enough data.

: )

So yes, just trying to save some people the hassle of buying this when it's not what they want.

This is a great screen for basic movies and tv and that's that.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Picture

Pros: Great Picture, price, features, connects nicely to media server

Cons: None really. The sound is good but if there are really loud explosions, it just doesnt do well

Other Thoughts: Overall I feel that I received a great deal. Very happy with my decision with this TV

4 out of 5 eggsGreat TV - Sound is Meh

Pros: It’s a great "looking" television. The TV works with home network and Netflix, can use a DNLA server. The picture is great and the TV itself looks great.

Cons: The sound projected out of this television is unacceptable. I know it’s a TV and I know it’s not the most expensive TV, but the sound is lacking in every key component except for rattle. If you like watching movies full of "rattles" and "splats" you won't need a sound bar. If your movie tastes are not in the rattley splatty genera, you might consider this TV and a sound bar.

Other Thoughts: Its a great TV, I would buy it again, however I would also purchase a sound bar.

4 out of 5 eggsToshiba 40L3400U 40" in a class of its own.

Pros: This is a VERY crisp and clear cut TV. Slim and light design, and is very well built. The stand seems very sturdy as well with a reinforced design(soon to hang up on the wall though). HDMI sound is pretty decent for the power of the stock speakers. Has 120 hz refresh rate by applying the "Movie" setting for the picture mode.

Cons: Other picture modes are 60hz which sucks, but the quality is still lovely even while gaming with a PC.

Other Thoughts: Overall I got a steal. It was on sale for $350 with free shipping. Came in Toshiba stock packaging, but arrived safe too. Reliable brand and really this should of been a 5 star review. I have typed to far to make changes.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for gaming monitor

Pros: colors looks amazing blacks are black, whites are white purples are rich its very colorful compared to my last tv. no screen tearing in ff14 with 115 average fps without vsync on in an SLI'd setup. it looks smooth and im really picky about that stuff as i have a sensitivity to micro-stutter. with this tv there is none. cleanscan is bundled in with cinema mode and works as it advertises. almost no blur! over all im happy with my purchase and if you bought this tv after reading everything i say in cons and other you would be too after gaming on it for a few hours. For $379(on sale). this thing was a steal.

Cons: i didnt get an owners guide that explains all of its features. i got a warranty pamphlet,a quick start guide and a resource guide but no book to read about how to use the firmware.becuase of this im still getting it set up perfectly trying different options and such.

sitting less than 2 feet away from it i can see the grid between the pixels but if i just barely i lean back in my chair its gone. this thing should look perfect if put my face on the screen but the grid is so small its almost like im imagining it so i asked my kid if he can see it and he said "it looks like a million tiny black squares that are so small they are almost not there at all"

120 hz is not possible until you hook it up to a modem and download a firmware update for it so its not a true 120 hz its like a software overclock inside the tv and to enable it you have to turn on Cinema Mode which is greyed out with the current version of the firmware. this is worth docking an egg for as i figured a company like Toshiba would have true 120 hz. and i bought this tv for its 120 hz function

Other Thoughts: dynamic lighting makes everything darker.
dynamic contrast looks bad for me on everything but the low setting.

i get a little texture flicker with the edges of moving leaves on trees but i think that can be fixed once i have it set up properly.
