4 out of 5 eggsGood Deal

Pros: Easy to Use. Makes a great dessert.

Cons: Noisy. Try to run it when you are not in the room.

Other Thoughts: Makes excellent ice cream. Using less than 35% cream in ice cream or whole milk frozen yogurt will make it grainy because of the ice crystals.

4 out of 5 eggsA Great Machine

Pros: Purchased as a "refurbished" unit that works perfectly.

This is an utterly simplistic machine that consists of a spinning motor base, a "freezer bowl" that you put in the freezer until ready to use, and a plastic paddle wheel and cover that remain stationary while the "freezer bowl" spins on the motor base.

Put milk, heavy cream (or half and half as we use for lower calories), vanilla, sugar, some flavoring like a couple of tablespoons of "instant espresso", and turn the machine on for half an hour or until the mix thickens and the motor changes tone indicating the contents are fully mixed.

The stationary removable paddle does the churning while the "freezer bowl" spins and cools the mixture. The resultant mix is typically the consistency of "soft serve" ice cream, but an hour in the freezer will harden the ice cream nicely.

The ice cream we've made is somewhat more "grainy" than store bought ice cream, but it is delicious and made with ingredients that you add, not fillers, binders, corn syrup, and a half-dozen unpronounceable chemicals.

The device also makes delicious "slurpies" and frozen drinks. Simply pour in soda, root beer, orange juice, or even "Starbucks" type cold coffee drinks, then turn it on and let the liquid harden until it's spoon eatable. Great during the hot Summer months, these frozen drinks really cool you down.

Cons: One negative to this Cuisinart machine is the potential to put on a few unwanted pounds, a real "owner hazard" to buying this device.

Other Thoughts: Making your own ice cream is inexpensive and the results are delicious using this easy to use device. The Cuisinart ICE-20 doesn't make a lot of ice cream at a time, but given that it is quick and easy to use, you can make a batch daily (the "freezer bowl" must be completely re-frozen after each use, meaning you can only use the device once a day.)

Pros: They make good ice cream

Cons: I wouldn't recommend a refurbished model. Right out of the box ours made a clicking noise when it runs like there is a damaged tooth on a gear. It's going back and I'll buy a new one to replace it.

Cons: Smallish bowl. Can't make really make two batches.

Other Thoughts: I love being able to make pure rich satisfying ice cream and sorbet.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Nearly idiot proof.
Makes a quart of creamy soft icecream in less than half an hour, although you should let the icecream freeze a good hour after removing from the icecream maker to get solid.

Cons: Could use a better recipe book.
Takes up a lot of freezer space.
Not dishwasher safe.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure how long it will last but so far I've made a half dozen batches and it's still going strong. The only really quibble is that you have to work fast to get the icecream out or it will freeze solid to the freezing container.

I use granulated Splenda and a mix of half and half and cream instead of milk and cream to make delicious low sugar icecream. So far I've made vanilla, orange-vanilla, and mint with semi-sweet chocolate chips.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little freezer

Pros: very easy to use, moderate noise level

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: We really like this and have made some sorbets with it and a homemade ice cream that tastes like a Wendy's Frosty. This thing has 3 parts and assembles, cleans and stores in seconds. So much easier than the big ice cream freezer with bags of ice and rock salt.
