5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Perfect rice every time with little effort & easy cleanup. Indirect heat is the way to cook rice. Every grain is moist & perfect, no crispy edges. Better than any rice we’ve had, even in fine restaurants, & leftovers stay moist & perfect for days.

It's a simple pot with few variables & took little time to figure out the ratios we like. Use the included measuring cup to measure rice for the inner pot & water for the outer cooker, & then also fill the inner pot to the proper line with water.

We follow the book for white rice: for each cup of rice fill the inner pot to that # line & then add that many cups of water to the outer cooker. For brown rice we do the same & add an extra ½ cup of water to the outer pot for every 2 cups of rice. More water in the outer pot = longer cook time. So, since brown rice requires the same ratio of water as white but a longer cook time, you only add more water to the outer cook pot. Once you know this, you can work out other grains.

Cons: When I researched this purchase, I thought that not having an extra steamer basket on top (like some others) was a drawback for this cooker, but now I don't. A steamer basket would be another variable to deal with and I'm not sure I want the flavors of something else over my rice. If I want to steam something else, I just use a steamer basket in a cooking pot - easy enough.

Other Thoughts: Like AB, I'm not crazy about unitaskers, but this is truly worth the counter space. You just can't duplicate the texture and taste and quality of rice without one. One exception is Alton Brown's baked brown rice recipe (seriously, google it & give it a try), but if you enjoy rice then this cooker is the right choice.

4 out of 5 eggsThe original rice cooker

Pros: Cooks great rice, among other things...just follow the instructions. It's a great steamer also!

Cons: Wire/plug may not be the best-suited for otherwise a great cooker/steamer.

Other Thoughts: Tatung has been making this particular rice cooker for over 50 years...this is THE original model that started the whole rice-cooker trend for ever home in Taiwan eversince and, the rest of Asia followed afterwards! There are many other newer designs nowadays but, this is still the classic!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: The indirect heating cooks the rice from top AND bottom, making all the rice evenly cooked to perfection. I tried 2-3 direct heating cookers and this one beats them all easily. You will see the difference! Also, since because of the design, you can cook a lot of different stuff in this as you can control the cooking time with the amount of water you put outside the inner pot.

Cons: Cooking soup and congee can be a little tricky as it can boil over inside the cooker. No big deal though, just wipe it out with a damp towel with some soap.

Other Thoughts: If you plan on making sushi or rolls, you must get this! The rice that comes out of this thing is in a whole different league. solid built Stainless steel is perfect as you don't get any nasty coatings and it lasts A LOT longer.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 29 days :(

Pros: Cooked rice fine the first month of use

Cons: Died 32 days after purchase -- 29 days of actual ownership, w/ shipping time factored in. Doesn't light up, or get warm (let alone hot). Doesn't inspire confidence in quality of materials and/or workmanship.

Newegg return policy is 30 days from purchase (not 30 days of ownership), so can't RMA to them. Contacting manufacturer to see if they support it longer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat rice cooker

Pros: It's the perfect rice cooker for me -- very simple to use. It's great for steaming vegetables, too, and has many other functions, such as poaching eggs, that I haven't even tried. I have never had a problem with the cord overheating.

Cons: There's a bit of an art to finding the right amount of water for different types of rice, but once you experiment and find the right amounts, it's just about fool-proof.

Other Thoughts: I got my first Tatung rice cooker, used, when I was in college about 15 years ago. It went missing during a move, and I went through a couple of unsatisfactory other-brand replacements, before I finally found a new Tatung through Newegg.

3 out of 5 eggsPower Cord Broken

Pros: Decent rice cooker. Works.

Cons: Power cord and plug are low quality. The cord feels hot when in use. The cord finally dead at close to power plug.

Other Thoughts: It was a good every-day rice cooker. But like a lot of the products from Taiwan and China, some parts are not good quality or good design.

How can you use a thin power cord for a 800W rice cooker? A better cord and plug can cost you another $2?

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The best rice maker of all. Very durable! Replaced my old one that last me 10 years. Just a reminder for others that gave bad reviews for this rice maker. You have to put some water on the bottom of the cooker(about 1/4 cup tops) between the cooker and the rice pot. New improved lid with little holes vent the steam nicely. Oh yeah! Fast shipping from Newegg. 2 days, just awesome!

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsno more nonstick coating

Pros: I bought it 5 years ago from newegg.com and use it almost daily. My friend from Taiwan told me it may last forever and I believe her. I just don't know how the company make money though. It not only make great rice, it can also make other things. If you can read Chinese, you will find lots of receipt including making yogurt.

Cons: it's kind of bulky. It doesn't bother me though.

4 out of 5 eggsRice Cooker

Pros: Indirect cook, no need to worry about Teflon peeling off

Cons: Pot is still made of aluminum, only the lid and inner pot is stainless steel. Power cord is now attached, not good as detached.
