5 out of 5 eggsGreat product and great price

Pros: Great product. No complain. We bought a used unit and have used it for 5 years before getting this as a replacement. Newegg had a sale and we got it for $70! What a great deal for a cooker of this size.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: We use it to warm up leftovers or keep warm. So it is more than just a rice cooker. It's actually our backup rice cooker as we have another pressure cooker with induction heating(IH) only for cooking rice.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Simple design, no fancy electronics to fail, reliable, non-teflon coated inner pot, versatile, easy to use.

Cons: Not popular in north America.

Other Thoughts: I am from Taiwan. Tatung is an old company based in Taiwan. They make more than rice cookers. They are in computer, household electronics, consumer electronics, motors, air conditioners, frigs, heavy industry equipment. Tatung initially started with rice cooker more than 60 years ago. This model is the original design which is the most popular one in Taiwan in the past and now. The name "Tatung" is the synonym of "rice cooker" in Taiwan.

Someone pointed out that it heats up water for cooking and thought that the highest temperature is 100C. That perception is not correct. The temperature of steam is higher than 100C. Steam heats up food from top while the cooker heats up food from bottom. When the water has all evaporated, the cooker still cooks from bottom for a while. At this moment, it becomes a direct heat and will automatically power off when a certain temperature has reached. My parents, siblings and friends only used this model since 1960's. I've been using a 6 cup model since 2004 and is still going strong.

1 out of 5 eggsNo good for cooking rice at all

Pros: None

Cons: Bought this a few weeks ago. Completely disappointed.
Its indirect heating is actually heating up water, and you put the inner pot inside the heated water. Now comes the problem, heated up max temperature is 100 degree C, so if you want to cook real rice, or make some soup of meat, this indirect heating just can not produce enough heating power or high temperature, food will not be thoroughly cooked.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 1 year and 2 months

Pros: It works when it works.

Cons: But it is dead after using only 1 year and 2 months, which means is out of warranty as well.

Other Thoughts: My parents' rice cooker has been used for more than 10 years. Is it that hard to make a reliable rice cooker?

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Cooked rice tastes great! Better than the aluminum convential rice cooker it replaced.
I am Asian, so you can trust me on this. I know my rice.
Regular long grain has no problem. Mixed white and brown rice also cooked without problem.
Internal container is easy to wash; that was my concern.
No burns at all.

Cons: No yet.
From other review, some unite breaks within 6 months. I am a bit warried how long ours can last. We are keeping the old faithful aluminum one just in case.

Other Thoughts: Best rice cooks we owned. So far so good.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Perfect rice every time with little effort & easy cleanup. Indirect heat is the way to cook rice. Every grain is moist & perfect, no crispy edges. Better than any rice we’ve had, even in fine restaurants, & leftovers stay moist & perfect for days.

It's a simple pot with few variables & took little time to figure out the ratios we like. Use the included measuring cup to measure rice for the inner pot & water for the outer cooker, & then also fill the inner pot to the proper line with water.

We follow the book for white rice: for each cup of rice fill the inner pot to that # line & then add that many cups of water to the outer cooker. For brown rice we do the same & add an extra ½ cup of water to the outer pot for every 2 cups of rice. More water in the outer pot = longer cook time. So, since brown rice requires the same ratio of water as white but a longer cook time, you only add more water to the outer cook pot. Once you know this, you can work out other grains.

Cons: When I researched this purchase, I thought that not having an extra steamer basket on top (like some others) was a drawback for this cooker, but now I don't. A steamer basket would be another variable to deal with and I'm not sure I want the flavors of something else over my rice. If I want to steam something else, I just use a steamer basket in a cooking pot - easy enough.

Other Thoughts: Like AB, I'm not crazy about unitaskers, but this is truly worth the counter space. You just can't duplicate the texture and taste and quality of rice without one. One exception is Alton Brown's baked brown rice recipe (seriously, google it & give it a try), but if you enjoy rice then this cooker is the right choice.

4 out of 5 eggsThe original rice cooker

Pros: Cooks great rice, among other things...just follow the instructions. It's a great steamer also!

Cons: Wire/plug may not be the best-suited for otherwise a great cooker/steamer.

Other Thoughts: Tatung has been making this particular rice cooker for over 50 years...this is THE original model that started the whole rice-cooker trend for ever home in Taiwan eversince and, the rest of Asia followed afterwards! There are many other newer designs nowadays but, this is still the classic!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: The indirect heating cooks the rice from top AND bottom, making all the rice evenly cooked to perfection. I tried 2-3 direct heating cookers and this one beats them all easily. You will see the difference! Also, since because of the design, you can cook a lot of different stuff in this as you can control the cooking time with the amount of water you put outside the inner pot.

Cons: Cooking soup and congee can be a little tricky as it can boil over inside the cooker. No big deal though, just wipe it out with a damp towel with some soap.

Other Thoughts: If you plan on making sushi or rolls, you must get this! The rice that comes out of this thing is in a whole different league. solid built Stainless steel is perfect as you don't get any nasty coatings and it lasts A LOT longer.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 29 days :(

Pros: Cooked rice fine the first month of use

Cons: Died 32 days after purchase -- 29 days of actual ownership, w/ shipping time factored in. Doesn't light up, or get warm (let alone hot). Doesn't inspire confidence in quality of materials and/or workmanship.

Newegg return policy is 30 days from purchase (not 30 days of ownership), so can't RMA to them. Contacting manufacturer to see if they support it longer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat rice cooker

Pros: It's the perfect rice cooker for me -- very simple to use. It's great for steaming vegetables, too, and has many other functions, such as poaching eggs, that I haven't even tried. I have never had a problem with the cord overheating.

Cons: There's a bit of an art to finding the right amount of water for different types of rice, but once you experiment and find the right amounts, it's just about fool-proof.

Other Thoughts: I got my first Tatung rice cooker, used, when I was in college about 15 years ago. It went missing during a move, and I went through a couple of unsatisfactory other-brand replacements, before I finally found a new Tatung through Newegg.
