4 out of 5 eggsGreat features, mediocre display

Pros: I replaced an older Hunter programmable stat with this one when I replaced the HVAC system. This model has a feature that I find is uber useful - "Refresh". This causes the fan to cycle on for 15 minutes if the temperature doesn't cycle the unit on for 1 hour. This helps equalize the air in the house, so I won't get one area a warmer or colder than the area where the stat is. This aids in controlling the humidity as well. Programming is simple (to me). The features include the ability to adjust the swing before the unit cycles on (1 degree, 2 degrees or 3 degrees) and up to three time frames - home, away and asleep. You have the option to not use the AWAY period in the menu (it is in the area of the Filter reminder and C/F selection). Copy from one day to several others if you have a consistant schedule - program Monday and copy it to Tues-Fri, program Saturday and copy to Sunday. You can even sit in your easy chair while you program it - just remove it from the wall base.

Cons: Backlight is too weak to be considered "good", but I don't have to see it that often. It's easier to read with a good room light on - or my keychain LED on it.

Other Thoughts: The features are VAST and if you read the manual you'll find that the usefulness is greatly improved. I compared features with others and this was the best bang for the buck. My last Hunter lasted 12 years and is still working - I just wanted more features!
BTW: When I'm "home" I touch Home Today and then can adjust the temp up or down before touching Done. I recently got my first electric bill and I can say the combo of the new HVAC unit and this thermostat makes me smile!

3 out of 5 eggsEasy install - Horrible display

Pros: I really liked the built-in level, the "snap-in" wire installation, and the "no-anchor" mounting screws. All of these things made the installation pretty easy. Definitely more than 5 minutes, but I took my time to make sure I was wiring things correctly.

Cons: The screen is HORRIBLE. There is a grid/overlay on the screen that is very distracting. This grid does not show up in any of the pictures on the packaging or on the web site. Plus, the tiny lettering for everything except the temperature is so small/thin/bad-contrast that it practically gave me a headache trying to read the display and program it. The tiny lettering looks very readable on the package/website pictures, but it is not anything like that on the actual display.

Programming seemed fairly straight-forward, except I could not figure out what to do for a time period that you did not want programmed. On the weekends I'm not away from the house for long/set periods of time. I ended up setting the on/off times for "away" on SAT/SUN to be exactly the same as the end of the "asleep" time period. I'm not sure if that was the correct thing to do, as the manual does not address this issue, and it does not appear that you can disable setting the "away" period.

Other Thoughts: When I first got it programmed and set it to run, it was putting out heat instead of cool air. The help section in the manual does not address this problem, and I considered calling support to get it figured out, but I knew I wouldn't be able to live with looking at that screen for the next 10 years and so I decided to return it and get a different thermostat.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds better screen....

Pros: Excellent build quality, virtually universal with most systems, large screen, easy to install.

Cons: The only thing that I do not like about it is that the screen has horrible contrast when the light is off. It is very difficult to read at any angle and the touch screen sensor grid is highly visible when the light is off. As for programming, I find the Honeywell's easier to program than this Hunter. Hunter boasts on their website that this model has fewer steps than other brands however I found it having more steps than a Honeywell.

Other Thoughts: It is a good quality thermostat with excellent features however for the price, I would rather go for a Honeywell touchscreen since it is easier to program and the screen does not have any contrast issues.
