Good front-loader, usual advantages and disadvantages
- Pros: It's a front-loader, usual in Europe and still unusual in the US for home machines. Like any other front-loader, it uses less water than most top-loaders and seems to get clothes cleaner, and the high spin speed means that clothes are relatively dry once they're washed, and dry quickly in a dryer or on the line. Seems as good a front-loader as one can get in its price range in the US these days. So far it's holding up fine, with no signs of trouble yet. Doesn't get unbalanced the way a top-loader can.
- Cons: This model holds a somewhat small load, and full cycles take rather longer than in my old top-loader -- I'd say about twice as long. I live alone and tend to do a cluster of loads of laundry when the clean clothes and bedsheets are about to run out, and I'd prefer a bigger capacity; a family definitely would do better with a bigger model. Needs the HE detergent -- not a big deal, but a little trickier to find unscented Still rather an expensive machine. Not designed to handle granular anything (e.g. Oxi-Clean). One really needs to leave the door open after a load so that it airs out: even a few hours and mine starts getting musty.
- Other Thoughts: It's sad that nobody in the US seems to make a reasonably-priced front-loading washer, and that even a machine like this one (Korean company, presumably made in Korea) is relatively expensive. Maybe they're expensive in Europe and Korea too. Maybe they are intrinsically more expensive than top-loaders, and poor people who could afford their own new washing machines here cannot as easily afford them in Europe (while saving money on water and power in the long run): I don't know. They border on the overpriced, though the reduced use of power by my electric dryer might well be making up for that.
