3 out of 5 eggsNot a bad knife set...not a great knife set either

Pros: They are relatively cheap. Santoku is the right size for kitchen use. The Santoku in the more expensive 12 piece Rosewill set should be this size. The scissors in the set are great and probably the only item that won't need sharpening.

Cons: Knife edges on these knives are deplorable. Rosewill should be ashamed of themselves for letting them be sold like this. Handle quality could be better for the money, they feel rather cheap. I don't feel you can really call these hollow ground blades either, truly not hollow ground by knifemakers definition.

Other Thoughts: I have never seen a rougher edge on a set of knives made for kitchen use in my life. Whoever sharpens these things in the factory before they are boxed needs to be fired.

Forget about using a chef's steel to sharpen these. The blade edges are not even smooth and show rough grind marks, particularly the 5" utility knife. It had virtually no cutting edge at all. No knife edge should be like that if it is properly honed and sharpened.

I ended up using a diamond hone on all the knives for about 15 minutes each, then moved to a soft Arkansas stone with honing oil for about 20 minutes per knife, and finished off with a hard Arkansas stone and honing oil at about 25 minutes per knife. I ended up with a very sharp set of kitchen knifes that will compliment the 12 piece Rosewill set I already have, and now they can be touched up on a ceramic chef's honing rod rather quickly when needed.

Though the handles feel cheaper than the 12 piece set, the knives themselves are hefty enough to give you a good feel in the hand.

As for rust, these are a stainless knife, but looking at the blade likely a lower nickel content than some, therefore it might show blade rust if not properly cleaned. Do not wash these knives in a dishwasher. Handwash with mild detergent only, and throughly dry. By all means, don't put them back in the knife rack wet or damp.

This is not at all what I expected from a Rosewill product, but after some work that I didn't expect to have to do, I have a functioning knife set. Rosewill just needs to QC their products more before their name goes on them. Tighten up, Rosewill.

1 out of 5 eggsKnives Became Rusty After 1 Use

Pros: Cheap is the word

Cons: The knife is defective and has a line of rust after 1 use and I handwashed it. Cant get rid of the rust. Would you want to cut your food with a rusty knife?

1 out of 5 eggsbad

Pros: cheap

Cons: I have these knifes for over a month now and they are the worst I've ever seen. They rust bad. Two of them were never used and they have been kept in a knife block and still have rust spots all over them. Sharpening from factory is sad uneven edge.

Other Thoughts: Buy them only if you need to experiment on cheap knifes otherwise save your money for something that is meant to last. This is just a waste of the materials used and fuel to ship it from China.

4 out of 5 eggsNice set

Pros: The knives feel good in your hand - I liked the shape of the grip on each.
The storage block is minimalistic and small, a must on my limited kitchen counter.
The scissors rule.
If you can eat it, these knives will cut it.

Cons: It's been said in many reviews about these knives, they're not razor sharp blades. You can plainly see that they've been machine sharpened by a low grit block and haven't had the final honing that a samurai sword may get - but they'll still cut it if you can eat it.

Other Thoughts: Other than the fact that you can't shave with them, this is a nice little set to have easily available. After running the blades down a steel, the edges sharpened up nicely and will cut paper without snagging.
After reading all this understand, I got my set as a $10 shellshocker. I doubt I'd be as gracious with my comments if I'd paid full price.

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate From 1/16/2013

Pros: After spending some TV time with a file and a good diamond knife sharpener, I am pleased with how sharp these knives can be made to be. I only used the Santuku and paring knives afterwards but they worked quite nicely. If you don't mind investing some time sharping these knives, they turn out to be a nice set at the promo price. I have not had any rust problem with these or with the Rosewill set I bought in 2011. Nice wood storage block.

Cons: All of knives had really rough, poorly ground and honed, dull edges. With so much else to do, I did not like having to take time to sharpen all of them myself.

Other Thoughts: Obviously Rosewill does not make the products they sell - they simply sell branded products. They can only hope that whoever makes the products with their name on them have some degree of quality. My experience with Rosewill products is that the quality varies from product to product. The Rosewill knife set that I bought in 2011 arrived in usable condition. This knife set was worthless until after I sharpened all of the knives. Product quality and customer service are just not what they were 20 to 30 years ago. Now that I have these knives sharp, I am not quite as dissappointed as I was when they arrived.
