Instructions:
Place the knife sharpener on a stable surface when using it. Complete one or both of the following steps depending on the bluntness of the blade.

Step 1: Coarse Sharpen (diamond wheel 360grit):
Use this only if your knife is very blunt. Using slight downward pressure, run the blade from its heel to its point through the slot. Repeat three times. Do this once every six months or as required.

Step 2: Fine honing (ceramic 1000grit):
Always finish off with this step to remove any burrs that result from the re-edging or honing process. Without using pressure, run the blade through the ceramic rods five times. You can also use this step on its own to maintain a sharp edge. It is recommended to do this approximately once a week.

After using the knife sharpener, carefully wipe the knife blade with a damp cloth or rinse under running water and dry thoroughly.

Caution:
Do not use the knife sharpener to sharpen serrated blades or scissors.
To avoid damaging the knife, please sharpen the knife slightly and DO NOT sharpen back and forth.
Do not put the sharpener in the dishwasher or submerge in water.
The ceramic rods may discolor. This is normal.

5 out of 5 eggsRosewill 2-Stage Knife Sharpener

Pros: Sharpens my chef's knife from CUTCO quite nicely.
I use it almost everytime before I cut or chop something.
Has a nice easy-to-grip shape and rubber feet.

Cons: Can't think of any...

Other Thoughts: I don't know if using this product voids my CUTCO lifetime sharpening warranty or not, but it sure is a lot more convenient!

I think the instructions say to NOT apply a whole lot of pressure when sharpening. Just slowly and gently insert the knife and pull back a few times in the #1 slot, then repeat in the #2 slot. I do apply a slight amount of downward pressure, but don't think it is necessary.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent knife sharpener!!!

Pros: Gosh, not sure why so many people gave this item a poor rating. I was a professional cook and actually trained cooks for years, so sharpening knives was a part of my daily routine and part of my trade.

This Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener worked about a million times better than I imagined....and I am not joking.

For decades, I have sharpened my knives the old fashion way...on a two-grit professional sharpening stone. I learned to put a razor edge on my knives over 40 years ago. So that should tell you that I write this as a person that does indeed have some excellent experience sharpening knives. Professional cooks will tell you the most dangerous knife is a dull knife...and it is absolutely true.

This Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener consistently sharpens my knives to razor sharp over, and over again.

It is about 10 times easier, and 10 times safer than sharpening a knife on a sharpening stone.

Out of 40+ years of sharpening my own knives on a stone, I have only slipped one time and cut myself bad enough to go to the ER room. With this Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener, it is nearly impossible to cut yourself while sharpening your knife. It makes the job so much easier and is much, much safer.

I am very happy using this Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener. Best of all, my wife likes it too.

If you can find a good price on it, buy it. Read the instructions and follow them! It is so easy!

I was able to purchase the Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener free here at Newegg.com after rebate.

Hey, it doesn't get much better than that!

I feel like Santa just gave me a wonderful Christmas gift.

Cons: I realize this may sound strange, but the only con I have found is reading all the negative reviews! After reading all the negative reviews, I was somewhat reluctant to purchase this unit, because I tend to believe what I read!

Now I am so glad I did buy it!

Other Thoughts: If you are a professional cook, get ready for a very pleasant surprise. You will probably put away your double grit sharpening stone like I did.

Finally, for me, a professional cook, I needed an average of 2-5 minutes to put a razor edge on one of my cutting knives while using the standard double grit sharpening stone....

I know this is hard to believe, but when I use the Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener, it takes between 5-10 seconds...

Man, what else can I say?

I think it is possible some people are not using this Rosewill 2-Stage Manual Knife Sharpener in the correct manner. That is the only explanation I can think of when I read so many negative reviews.

I have had only positive experiences while using this knife sharpener. If I can find more of them [NewEgg.com just discontinued carrying them], I will buy a few more for friends, relatives and professional cooks as a wonderful gift.

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of time and dinero

Pros: Can't think of any? Oh yeah, it looks cool and is ergonomic.

Cons: You name it. It doesn't even deserve one egg but the review wouldn't post unless I gave it one.

Other Thoughts: If you want a really good knife sharpener plan on spending a LOT more and get one from a store that caters to and supplies professional meat cutting, i.e. butcher or chief implements. Years back I spent over $200 on a pro. unit and it was the best investment I ever made. It's still going strong and sharpens carbon or stainless perfectly. The only reason I own the Rosewill unit is because the wife though it would be neat to have a sharpenen in the kitchen instead of the shop and she ordered it.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks great,except!!

Pros: Just got it today. Worked great with a major exception!

Cons: See otherthoughts...

Other Thoughts: MAJOR EXCEPTION
This sharpener works great on CARBON STEEL based knives. No Way will it sharpen a STAINLESS STEEL knife. The sharpening wheels are not up to dealing with Stainless!
I think this is the point that is giving everyone grief over buying it.
Rosewill does state it will sharpen Stainless Steel knives. I, plus many, would like to see that done. Carbon Steel, absolutely;
Stainless Steel,no can do.
Followed directions, not included in the pkg.,to the letter!

4 out of 5 eggsSharpens nicely

Pros: When used correctly, it does a fine job of sharpening my knives.

Cons: If you apply too much pressure when sharpening, or if you oversharpen, you can make your knives more dull than when you started.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Worked okay the first couple times.
Nice ergonomics.

Cons: Not sure what their definitional of sharp is. After the first couple uses it becomes useless.

Other Thoughts: I'm the cook of the house and I like sharp knives, it makes prep time more efficient. I saw this Shell Shocker for $10 and figured I would give it a shot since it is advertised as having a "diamond wheel 360grit" (after all, diamond is the hardest substance known to man).

Sorry, this sharpener doesn't cut it (pun intended). I picked up a sharpening stone at my local hardware store, and with some elbow grease it work 10 times better. C'est la vie!

1 out of 5 eggsMaybe Mine is Defective?

Pros: Looks nice. Easy-grip handle makes unit easy to hold on to while using it.

Cons: It's a good thing it's easy to hold on to because you'll be using it a lot. If you're able to get a sharp edge on your knives with this, please tell me how you did it. Overall, I *love* Rosewill products, and tend to buy them over other manufacturers whenever I have the chance. However, I was very disappointed in this knife sharpener. Perhaps I'm using it wrong, or my unit is defective. The wheels turn, and it appears it's working as designed - it just doesn't put a very good edge on my knives. I read one review here that said to use light pressure and let the unit do the work. Perhaps I've been using too much force. When I get home tonight I'll try again, using less pressure on the knife while sharpening it. If that works better, I'll come back and modify this review. Otherwise, I'll chalk this up as the first "bad" product I've ever gotten from Rosewill.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully I've just been using it wrong. As I said, I'd recommend Rosewill products 100 times out of 100. They normally make very good products.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Definitely do not use a lot of pressure with the unit. Only very slight pressure is needed when running the blade through the sharpener. Start on the coarse slot and run it from the base of the knife and slide it through all the way to the tip of the knife. Only use it in 1 direction. Do not slide it back and forth. Only go from the base to the tip in a fluid motion. Do that a couple times or as needed to get the blade sharp. Then move it to the fine slot and run it through the same way, but you'll only need to run it through once to get rid of any parts that are sticking out of the blade due to the sharpening process. If you are still having issues after that, please contact the Rosewill support team either via phone at 800-575-9885 or via email at techsupport@rosewill.com.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a good sharpener

Pros: Easy to use. It is probably useful for getting a uniform angle on the tip of curved blades (which I've never been able to measure or to estimate precisely on sharpening stones) but I am not really impressed. If you don't know how, or if you otherwise cannot sharpen knives, this device may be of some value. It has been many years since I used a sharpening gizmo, so I cannot compare it to anything except a plain sharpening stone or plain diamond hone, and it is not as good.

Cons: It does not get blades very sharp; not as sharp as I keep them with a simple stone. The wheels in the gizmo I got are aligned at angles, so that the stone makes contact on the two sides at different distances from the "base" (the correct 4-letter word begins with b and ends with t -- Newegg rejects it as "improper and unsuitable for submission... obscene and/or potentially offensive language") of the blade -- closer to the left side on the coarse wheel and closer to the right side on the fine wheel. Also the points of contact are recessed from the shell of the sharpener, so you cannot get the entire blade sharpened.

Other Thoughts: I have emailed Rosewill about the peculiar alignment of the wheels - maybe it is a defect in this unit - (and about other issues) but no time for response yet. As others have noted, please note again: there are NO INSTRUCTIONS in or on the box. The box tells you only not to sharpen serrated blades or scissors, not to run the blade back-and-forth and not to submerge the sharpener in water.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
There should be instructions printed on the top of the box. Please double check to see if they are there. If you are still having issues after that, please contact the Rosewill support team either via phone at 800-575-9885 or via email at techsupport@rosewill.com.
