3 out of 5 eggsB&D Quality Ain't What It Used To Be

Pros: Good price for a convection oven.

Cons: Monday morning quality!!

Other Thoughts: I have owned one of these toaster overs for several years. It still works fine, but has grease splotches on the inside and burn spots on glass door, so I decided for $40 I'd invest in a new one. The new one arrived, I unpacked it and set it on the counter. Immediately I could see that the door had been installed crooked. The top of the door is supposed to be parallel to the top of the oven - but it was at least 1/2" off. In other words, the top right side of the door was 1/4" from the top of the oven and the top left side was 3/4". It was an eyesore, and I couldn't believe Black and Decker had allowed it to ship in that condition. This appeared to be on of those "made on Monday morning" devices.

I ordered a replacement from Newegg. At first it appeared they wanted to charge me $28 to ship it back!! However, I contacted their customer service dept. and they issued me a prepaid shipping label to return it.

Of course I had to wait until the old oven got back before they would ship the replacement, but about two weeks later the new oven arrived. AND HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. Door was crooked. Not as bad as the first one, but certainly not something I wanted sitting on my counter top.

This time I returned it for a refund. I'll just keep using my old one.

4 out of 5 eggsOnly one flaw

Pros: Bakes well and heats evenly.

Cons: The rack included with the oven is not braced properly and can bend enough to fall from the wall groves, dumping the contents of what you are cooking. Lost half a pumpkin pie that way.

Other Thoughts: Do not pull out the oven rack even part way when it has something on it. It bends easily, and will fall out of the side wall groves.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Tray Sucks

Pros: It was just three Hamiltons on sale at a local Sears wannabe. If the tray wasn't so bad, it is acceptable for a low-end TO. Really though, you should buy anything that isn't B&D because all they sell has this same faulty nonstick coating. No, I am not just one of those weirdos who freak out about chemicals in the coating.

Cons: The aluminum pan with silver nonstick coating started to flake the first time I used it normally and gently hand-washed it. I should have known something was up, but waited a bit too long to get my 60-day refund at my local store. It goes into the dishwasher for probably the 2nd time and comes out coated in rust spots. B&D will only send a new pan and I don't see why this one would be any less defective, but we'll see.

Other Thoughts: Spend $50 more on a nice toaster with real toast settings. If you have to go cheap, don't buy B&D with crummy nonstick coating.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: Good quality, inexpensive, good internal space, lots of options, looks great.

Cons: Toast timer didn't work for us. It ticks down, but at a certain point it just stops counting down and stays on. Must have a slightly defective one. Door spring is pretty weak, but not really noticeable unless you are really thinking about it.

Other Thoughts: It is a little annoying not having the timer go off when toast is ready, but since it toasts pretty fast, and the door is a nice big window, it works for toasting if you just keep an eye on it for the whole 1.5 minutes it takes to toast something. Other than that, what can I say? I purchased it for $30 and free shipping and I got more than I expected. If I had paid full price, I might have been more upset about the toast timer not working, but even so, the unit is solidly built and everything else works great, so why get hung up on the small stuff?

5 out of 5 eggsBeastly

Pros: High power! Smaller than my previous black and decker it replaced. Convection baking very evenly browns things like frozen items, fries, tater tots, fish sticks and the like. Those 1500Watts really gives alot of power to the broiler, the reason I really want a toaster oven. Without having to use the power and bulk of the large oven, I can use this one as a little hades monster, cripsing skin like a pro. I ran the whole list before I posted the review, from cakes and pies, to fries and chicken 1/4's, and everything came out A+ (although I havent done my 9" pizzas yet, I dont think it will be a problem) the fries! the fries! you dont have to flip them and theyre SOOO crispy all over! mmmmm. Its also got a very small footprint compared to the black and decker it replaced, which means I could put it so that the exhaust on the right side went straight to my standard ovens hood/vent.
Oh, yeah, and for the price I got I almost felt like I was stealing it.

Cons: That same small footprint I think means less general insulation. This oven is just as large inside as my last, but much smaller on the outside (like a tardis, kinda) but that appears to mean I cant put anything but pans and such on top of it. no big deal.
One weird thing that I found other people complain about, is a gap between the door and the oven when closed. My gap is minimal, and only on the right side. It kinda bugs me, but Im going to rectify that problem with some kind of high temp food safe gasket. Also, the oven did not come with its proprietary broiling pan, although the sheet pan that comes with it slides under the toasting rack, cover that with nonstick foil, and BAM - awesome always clean oven.

one note: run this guy on hot for a little while to burn off that awful smell. it just happens.

Other Thoughts: It works! after several other options failed to meet my criteria, I found a toaster oven that works the way I want it to, I have to buy my bread frozen because of allergies, and this thing toasts it just right. Great for a single person that likes frozen stuff, one person wouldnt need to use much else honestly. I cooked a gluten free cake in it even, and it came out evenly browned. Thats the word I would use to describe this oven, even. Although honestly first would be HOT. dont even think of trying your test toast anywhere near dark, youll end up with black blackness. also, you have to turn the knob past 20mins before you set it, weird I know.

In summation, this is an awesome and reasonably priced toaster oven that would probably meet most peoples requirements for most baked/broiled things that fit in it. I love the power, its effectiveness, and I totally reccomend this oven. its great.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Little Oven

Pros: Fast relative to a standard toaster oven, heats evenly, quiet, flexible controls, large front glass, easy to clean, includes assortment of trays and racks.

Cons: Manual timer is not very granular, hard to get repeatable toast results without watching (can be done with practice).

Other Thoughts: Purchased elsewhere on fire sale. Nicely constructed (for what it is), when baking cooks about 20% faster than a conventional oven. Food, toast, even bagels come out evenly browned. Circulation fan only operations on bake setting and is not loud. A great choice for smaller meals when you don't want to heat the entire kitchen.

Pros: Temperature evenness form point to point in the oven (as measured by thermocouple) was an impressive +/- 3 degrees

2 out of 5 eggsGood but flawed

Pros: Four heating elements, convection, size, cooking options (except for Toasting)

Cons: No auto-off when door is opened. Door does not close with positive pressure leaving a small gap. Toaster setting range too small, on the dial it's about 1/4in from no toast to completely black burnt.

Other Thoughts: Will RMA for refund. No auto-off and silly toast settings kill this product. I could live with the weak door spring.
