3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Vacuums carpets well. Haven't used extensively on bare floors, but appears to do an equally good job there.

Cons: Vacuumed carpet residue is reduced to a fine almost powdery substance which adheres to everything it touches. Be careful when emptying. Residue clings to unit inside. Two onboard tools particularly crevice tool is inferior to ones on my old Bissell.

Other Thoughts: Due to the high maintenance (emptying catch tube each use, weekly damp cloth cleaning after disassembling, monthly fiter(2) cleanings) I would not buy this machine again and would not consider buying another bagless machine.

4 out of 5 eggsQuality counts

Pros: Solid and handsome design meets basic function on rugs without auto height giving the user maximum control over using the vacuum. 12 amp power is 10% more than the competition when considering the power and the width of the brushbar. Electric motored brushbar is isolated from dirt area of the brushes. Easy open brush compartment and brush removes easily without exposing a belt or any mechanicals (should last a long time) (manual hair removal like the competition - this model lacks the feature introduced by Electrolux at higher cost earlier models). Seals are durable and protected including the one at the bottom of the extending wand where in the base it maintains no air bleed to reduce suction to the brush head. Earlier models had this seal at the very end of the wand and was more vulnerable to wear and tear (shows this model, while more basic, was an improvement on the engineering deficiencies learned in the models that were out this previous year). Lack of reach of brushhead under furniture (higher profile when handle in "lay down", and non sweveling brush head limits reach under tables and chairs) is a reasonable compromise to durability as maneuverability is still high and easy wand can reach under in these areas that see little traffic to crush rug pile down or otherwise need the brush action. Easy to carry on balanced handle in front of cannister - whether to empty or to carry the whole vacuum up stairs or to other rooms. Intuitive location of hand and foot control buttons and remember there is a reset switch for the electric brushbar on the housing just above the floor. Dust capacity and weight/size overall are well balanced to provide convenient and less frequent cleanouts than the competition yet any easy to use and maneuver vacuum cleaner.

Cons: Does not include the button brushbar clean feature. Warranty is 5 years, not 7 years. Light because of high strength plastics that overcome durability concerns if warranty is honored hopefully because of wide commercial customer base in commercial vacuums. Lacks innovative attachments of the competition. Cord only 25 ft and brushbar housing is not able to reach under furniture or swivel like the competition. Width is only 12 inches wide pickup making more passes necessary to cover a large area. Because the wand removed engages the crossover of suction from the burshbar to the hose, if only the handle is needed for short uses like upholstery, the metal extension should be pulled also from the floor unit to enable the suction in the hose. It does rest loosley yet securely when doing this but confuses some users that found no suction when using the attachments on the short handle (again used without the metal extension section).

Other Thoughts: More suction power in amps per inch of brushbar (than any other vac available today). Convenient to maneuver on floor and above the floor cleaning tasks but lack the specific versatility of attachments some other brands provide. Great seals are durable and easy to operate making hepa filter effective. Capacity of dustbin and better swirl dynamic means less frequent filter washes needed. Weakness of all these bagless designs are the time and effort to clean them and while two filters are washable, they must dry a recommended 24 hours before reuse making these vac designs unsuitable for commercial use. The bags win when labor costs are considered. Strenth/weakness versus the competition: Hoover is less durable with a weak belt exposed in the brushhead and a dustcup that does not keep the dirt away from the filters as well; Dyson has similar difficulty under tables and chairs and costs 3 times as much - swivel head is a problem for operators with arthritis and the unit is top heavy to tip over when using the hose with attachments; Shark rotator has similar capability of base unit but better selection of attachments; Shark rocket has very limited capacity and frequent clean out required but is very light and more maneuverable. Stay away from the older Hoover units that do not employ an electric brushhead (belt fails and clogs bushhead making earlier Hoover (pre "air" models) to be a headache to own and lower warranty and lack of parts availabilty "retires" the Hoovers too early.

5 out of 5 eggsGood vac

Pros: Suction is very good. Cleaned with my old vac first and then with this the day I got it and it really made the carpet perfect. Very easy to put together. Just a good solid vac.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: No worries its a good order. Thanks egg. I have had hard drive issues with egg in the past but stuff like this helps me forget.

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Great suction, picked stuff up in one pass. Quick to setup and very easy to use.

Cons: Buttons for disconnecting things like the dust collector and height variations seem/feel cheap/easy to break. Though if you are careful this shouldn't be a problem.

Other Thoughts: Not sure how it compares against other $300 vacuums, but for the shellshocker $140 it is a good buy and gets the job done. Only used on carpet.
