5 out of 5 eggsWorks in the Desert

Pros: Simple to use.
Works on long cat5 runs.
Preserves battery life.
Worked in Iraq and still works.

Cons: Doesn't stop mortar rounds

Other Thoughts: We used these testers when i was deployed to Iraq i built a lot of networks and ran a lot of cables and this thing was like my best friend (next to my crimper and my rifle). Never had a single problem doing what it was suppose to except when you forgot to change the battery then you get cables that constantly fail and you stand there and say "I crimped this thing six times how the heck am i screwing this up?" . For this this thing to last in the desert and comeback and still work after all the abuse i put it through. It gets 5 eggs hands down. I would wait to see if thing goes on sale but you buy this you won't need another one.

5 out of 5 eggsA must-have for anyone who deals with any kind of network infrastructure

Pros: Dead-simple to use with quick, obvious indicators. Sturdy, impervious to abuse so far. It takes only a few seconds to verify both patch cables and in-wall applications w/keystone jacks installed. The small size and ability to act as a tone generator saves valuable space in the 'quick network troubleshooting' toolbox as well.

It feels very solid in use, in stark contrast to the less expensive testers apparently targeted at the 'enthusiast' market.

Cons: Certainly on the high-end of the price scale for the number of functions, but I wouldn't reduce the rating for the price. You can tell with it in your hands that it was built to take daily use in a work environment.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice to be able to test crossover cables on the rare occasion I may build some.

I also find the 'press button to turn on, press again to test' a bit redundant. I wouldn't be turning on my cable tester if I wasn't testing a cable. IMHO, it would be ideal to automatically perform the default testing on pushing the power button. A minor nitpick, and it might only save you a second per cable; but depending on the size of the job those seconds start to add up.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Feels extremely durable and well built.
- Easy to use.
- Tests individual pairs.
- Powers itself off automatically after 20 seconds of inactivity.
- Shows detailed info.

Cons: - Fails perfectly fine crossover cables!!
- Kind of expensive.

Other Thoughts: You'd think a device as expensive as this would be able to identify a crossover cable...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Tool

Pros: Rugged Design, easy to read/use, very versatile. I chose this unit over other, less expensive ones because the build quality looked better, and I wasn't let down. This is a rugged pro-quality tool. Comes with adapters for the BNC connector to allow you to test/tone cables with F type connectors and RCA, in addition to the BNC and RJ-45. Tone function makes tracking cables through walls and ceilings much easier, as well as identifying cables in a bundle. Note that you'll already have to own an inductive pickup probe to use the tone function, but most consumers considering this product over less expensive alternatives already will. Highly recommended.

Cons: None.
