1 out of 5 eggsGood tester no good support

Pros: Good one of these last year. Terminators make it easy for one person to test multiple runs a the same time. My co-workers liked it so well it grew leggs and walked away, so I ordered another.

Cons: Got the unit and tested it before taking to a job site. Opened and installed new battery. Tested 6 know good RJ45 patch cables with all 4 terminators. Terminator 1 shows a short on pin 7 on all cables tested. Terminators 2, 3, and 4 show the same cables as good. Contacted StarTech and was told "Because we do not sell the terminators separately it would most likely be faster to have the whole unit replaced by newegg." I told their help desk tech that all I want is for them to send me a tested and known good replacement and a prepaid return label for the bad one, if they want it back and that I really shouldn't have to be telling you this.

Other Thoughts: I don't want to buy a terminator, I just want to have the bad one replaced. If I send the whole kit back, I stand a 50/50 chance of getting another bad terminator. I'll give StarTech until CVOB Monday, November 19. If I don't hear from them, Guess I'll have to RMA to Newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsStartech LANTESTPRO great for RJ45 testing

Pros: The Startech LANTESTPRO RJ45 Network Cable tester is the best one of have used so far. The simply display allows for quick assessment when testing network cables. It provide the 1-to-1 testing of each wire in the network cable and then gives you a read out of the type of cable you have connected.

For the few clients and myself I have used this RJ45 cable tester on it has already paid for it's self. At one of my clients a computer was having issues with dropped packets and a few other things, I connected the tester and on of its Terminators and the test after checking showed a short in the RJ-45 cable running from where the DSL/Router, Switch was at to the RJ-45 jack at the other end. That ended up a win for me, that my client contracted me to run a new cable 75 feet between the two points.

Cons: I have had the Startech LANTESTPRO RJ45 Network Cable tester for about a year+ now and it seems to drain the 9v batteries quickly. I make sure the LCD display is not lite, except for when the tester is first turned on. The tester is always left in the OFF position when stored in its carrying case.

I had to supply my own 3 feet and 6 feet RJ-45 cables to connect the Terminators to the RJ-45 wall out let. Not a big deal it would have just been a nice addition.

Using 9v batteries is great to keep the Startech LANTESTPRO RJ45 Network Cable tester portable but it would have been get to have a 9v power adapter to come with the tester too. This would come in hand when testing multiple network RJ-45 connectors in an office setting.

Other Thoughts: The only major thing I would make a change to is how the Startech LANTESTPRO RJ45 Network Cable tester uses 9v batteries so that when the unit is stored there is no drain on the battery until it is needed. That is way I only gave it 4 eggs instead of 5 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsAs advertised so far.

Pros: Needed something easy to use at a relativly reasonable cost. This unit got good reviews on other sites and NE had the best price. Arrived today. Opened the box, put in a battery (not included) and ran some tests. So far, so good. Will update after field use.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Tested a pre-built Cat 5e using the out and loop connectors on the unit and it showed every pin shorted to pin 1. Tested the same cable with a remote and it tested good. Tested a second Cat 5e on the main unit and it tested good. Repeted the first test and got the same result as I did the first time. ????????
Enclosed instruction sheet said there were RJ45 to 10Base2 BNC adapters in the box, but I didn't find any. Not that I would ever use them anyway.
