5 out of 5 eggsReal timesaver

Pros: Has a zippered carrying case.
Dovetail on the side holds the local and remote sections together when stored or testing loose cable.
Indicator lamps are bright, easy to see.

Cons: On and off switch feels weak like it might break.
Only tests continuity.

Other Thoughts: This really saves time when testing a new cable for continuity. The green lights scroll as it tests each conductor so you can see what the device is doing.
I don't know why the specifications say the unit will scan manually, the switch has two positions, one that scans fast and the other position scans slow.
Well worth the price for anyone making RJ45 or RJ11 network or phone cables. It can save a lot of time when dealing with a bad connection.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple is often the best

Pros: Does what it is advertised to do. This is a good inexpensive test tool and is a perfect fit for what I was looking for.

Cons: Not sophisticated enough to handle plugging into a live telephone or data (POE) circuits. But that is not really a con for the price point of this tester and that warning was also mentioned in the instructions. Instructions not very clear and could've been written better.

Other Thoughts: For tracing out data and phone jack cabling in your home this is not a bad tool. I like that the remote unit has indicators that blink in sequence with the master unit when a straight thru connection is found. Did not try this on a cross-over cable but assume the indicators would light up accordingly.

I have a centralized network & phone wiring panel in my home installed by the home builder. None of the cables are marked and this is a nice simple tool to trace both the phone and data cables so I could label them. The instructions were just a little vague but I am in the IT business and it wasn't hard to figure out how to use this tool. The switch has 3 positions, off, fast scan and slow scan. I think the single sheet product instructions said something else, not sure. Overall this is a good tool for the novice. If you need to troubleshoot by length or find intermittent shorts then you will need a more sophisticated tool then this.

4 out of 5 eggsJust works

Pros: * Price
* Works
* Easy to use

Cons: * Feels cheap
* Bag is VERY cheap

Other Thoughts: What can you say about a simple rj11/rj45 cable tester? I got it for less than $10 and I feel I got more than my money's worth.

It works just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsBeats a continuity tester

Pros: I got it for 7 bucks.

It worked.

You just turn it on (fast or slow) and if it doesn't look like a pair of drag racing lights, somethings wrong.

Cons: useless documentation

I had to create a shortable cable to figure it out.

does not have manual scan (just auto fast/slow)

Other Thoughts: you just put it in scan and it should light up 1-1,2-2,3-3,etc

If there is a short, you'll see things like 1-none,2-2+3

crossovers are 1-3,2-6,3-1,4-4,5-5,6-2,7-7,8-8 (i think the 4,5,7,8 should be crossed but mine was hand made and those leads aren't used in most cases)

I learned that phone lines are actually crossed
each end is the reverse of the other
blk-red-grn-yel
yel-grn-red-blk
I never knew that

1 out of 5 eggsWorked Once then Died

Pros: Small, easily fits in toolkit, Zippered Case.

I purchased it on the 23rd of DEC 2012. I had a chance to use it for the first time last week, 16th of JAN 2013, it worked great. I was able to verify a fairly long cable run after I crimped on the RJ-45 clips.

Cons: Forward to today, just outside the 30 days and NOTHING. Unit will not turn on. No LED. Nothing. I looked over the obvious and found nothing out of sorts.

Short of taking it apart, I can find no reason for it not to power on. Yes, the battery is good.

So I have a Cable Tester that worked ONE TIME.......

Other Thoughts: As a rule, I generally like most Rosewill Products. They provide good value at a reasonable price.

This is the 1st time I have been dissatisfied. Past the 30 days, Newegg will not take it back. So I have a DEAD tester.

They are inexpensive, I could simply order another one. Still, it gripes me. Even though the 30 days had past, it was not by much and I only got to use it ONCE.

Time for Rosewill to step up, don't you think?

2 out of 5 eggsWorked 3 times...then died

Pros: Cheap price and worked the first 3 times I needed it.

Cons: Didn't work the 4th time I needed it. Given the construction quality and experience I would expect these to fail after a very limited number of uses. Circuit board does not self test, nor will it conduct the cable test it was designed for. Something on the circuit board failed. Not reliable...buy a better unit if you plan to use this more than a few times
