5 out of 5 eggsWorth The Money

Pros: Worked exactly as it was intended. Leather case was nice, and I received all the attachments for testing.

Cons: None, very pleased with it.

Other Thoughts: If you can't afford a high dollar tester, this is the next best thing for checking continuity.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value!

Pros: * Very easy to use
* Nice manual mode
* Price

Cons: * Feels delicate
* Case is awful

Other Thoughts: Great little tester that's easy to keep handy and easy to use and read. The case it comes with is awful, but that's easy to overlook for the great value.

4 out of 5 eggsEyeball tester

Pros: You will have to use your eyes to mentally pair the led's for each pin; there is no "result" test capability where the result is presented with various led's for pass/fail, short, mis-wire, etc.

Fine when you have a new cable "in your hands" - allows quick test. Main unit has 2 connectors; one for each end of cable; no need for remote in this case (unlike other more expensive testers where the remote is always used as only 1 connection on the main unit).

Auto function will cycle through each pin repeatedly.

Manual function will step through each pin at push of blue button (for us slow "readers") or when doing a mis-wire remote test.

Comes with 2 SMALL inserts that snap into the rj45 size connections to allow snug fit when testing rj11/rj12 cables; nice.

By buying a couple of female coax to bnc male adaptors, you can also test coax cable. But these connections are not included (they aren't in more expensive testers either).

Cons: More problematic if testing an existing, in-place cable, especially where ends are not close together. If you're by yourself, while the auto function will allow you to verify connectivity and short readily by watching the lights on the remote; open with some studying of remote pattern on the auto cycles; the mis-wire test might have to be done in manual mode, with walking in between to "pair up" the pin on the main with the pin on the remote.

While there is a carrying case, the remote does not fit inside the main unit as in other more expensive testers.

No convenient storage for the SMALL rj11 insert templates except for the rj45 connection sockets. Just be careful not to misplace when testing rj45 cables (the carrying case has no pockets).

Not exactly robust. Fine for the casual home user, but a more robust tester that provides test results on the main unit probably better if you're going to test regularly.

Other Thoughts: Quality is an issue. Make sure you try out IMMEDIATELY (duh). First unit I received, the main unit was fine, but the remote was faulty (1 pin's led would not light with a known good rj45 cable. When tested with the included rj11 cable, on the remote, the pin's led would not light; on the main unit, the pin's led dimmed NOTICEABLY.)

RMA'd to Newegg; replacement unit worked as expected.

I also have a Byte Brothers CTX200, which is more robust, remote carried inside the main, and has the led test result capability.

But for casual in the hand cable testing, the RTK-007 is fine.

3 out of 5 eggsJust ok

Pros: This device does a fine job if you're just testing local cables.

Cons: However, if you're using it to track a cable in another room, it's a pain. You have to connect the cables. Then press the Test button. And then go back to see if the cables are lighting up to see if you have the correct cable.

1 out of 5 eggsDont ever expect to change the battery...

Pros: Since I couldn't even use it nothing...

Cons: The 9V battery cable is so flimsy on this thing it rips out the battery conductor just trying to disconnect a 9V.

Other Thoughts: I started with a bad battery that I thought was good and it hooks up to other 9V things just fine without ripping the terminals off those, but the battery cable on this thing is so cheap it's impossible to pull it out of a 9V without the terminal separating from the cable...
